My go-to place when craving for Mexican food. The place is cozy and has plenty of food selections.

We liked the service, and my wife likes the food, but as this was our 2nd time eating here, we've discovered that my daughter and I just aren't crazy about it. Granted, their Jamaica "juice" is quite good. But I didn't really like their guacamole, and even their birria wasn't that flavorful. Granted, I'm comparing their Birria to Mojo on Bell Blvd, my favorite... the Birria at El Gallo Negro 2 seems a lot more natural and probably authentic... I just can't help that I love the Birria at the other place. The bathroom is clean (though I would suggest a bead of caulk around the sink) and as I said, the server was helpful and checked in periodically. All in all, I would go back if the wife really wanted to go, but nothing was actually that incredible there that I could see her saying "ohhhh, we have to go back for that _____." I wish them the best though... I like seeing this type of Mexican restaurant in this neighborhood. read more

I'm honestly surprised by the bad reviews. I tried a cemita al pastor the guacamole and a chimichanga de tinga and the food was delicious! The cemita was savory and the meat was so good. The guac could use more salt. I would come back and try other items on the menu. Service was quick and attentive. Food came out quick. You also get complimentary chips and salsa. It's a causal spot in the neighborhood playing good music and telemundo on the tv. I'm sure there's sports when games are playing. read more

I have given this spot a couple of tries since I live very close to it. Each time I have had my food delivered to my home. I wish I could give it more stars but honestly the food is not that good. I only have tried their cheese birria tacos and mulitas with their consume and they are just bland. The consume does have a good flavor but the meat in the birria tacos are dry and tasteless. I can't say I haven't given this spot a chance, I've ordered from here 3 times. Another thing is that each time I order, my consume is half spilling in the bag, they should definitely wrap their consume in clear plastic wrap to avoid spillage. I went in for the first time last weekend and ordered and paid for some enchilladas and chips and salsa to go. First, the girl at the counter was totally unfriendly. Then when I got home I saw that they had not put the chips and salsa in my bag. Rip off. The enchilladas were actually pretty good but I will NEVER go back to this place. Located in a small shopping center a block away from Target in College Point is El Gallo Negro. I was in the mood for some authentic Mexican tacos but did not want to make a trek to Jackson Heights. Looking at the menu, they had the right stuff: Tacos Al Pastor, Bistec, Carnitas, and Lengua. Because of Coronavirus, everything is strictly to go. There was also a sign indicating that they are cash only, so ai had to check my pockets. The tacos come topped with onions, cilantro, and guacamole. We ordered tacos pastor (grilled pork), carne asada (grilled beef), and pollo asada (grilled chicken). They also include a grilled scallion and a lime with each taco as well as a grilled jalapeño pepper! The pastor was very well seasoned as was the beef and chicken. The flavor was on par with the tacos I usually get in Jackson Heights. The only let down was that the meat (pork, beef and chicken) was a little dry, but otherwise, it was tasty. TLDR: while I would still go to Jackson Heights for tacos, but if I'm in Whitestone, El Gallo Negro is a good local alternative if I can't make the trips . read more

If you're looking for a good takeout place, don't order here. Ordered via grubhub to have the order cancelled upon arrival. Called the store and were able to re-order. No idea as to why our order was cancelled. Possibly because this place is Cash-Only.. When re-ordering over the phone we were unable to order cemitas or tortas. They did not have any of the dessert options available on their menu either. Sorry to say I cannot review those items. Over the phone we were told our order would be ready in 15mins, which was great to hear as we were already there! After 15mins we went to pick up our order to which we were told 5 more minutes.. at the 30 minute mark we asked about our order to which the person at the register had walked back to the kitchen, after some arguing it appeared they had never heard about or started our order. 55 minutes later, 2 other parties had came and left with their order and we were still waiting. If we had known this would not be a 5minute later ordeal when we walked in we would not have continued with this order and went elsewhere. An hour later we received our order and brought it home! As for the food: 1 fish taco: cold fish, lettuce and sauces were fresh at least. 1 shrimp taco: shrimps were fried and battered with their tails still on which was an interesting touch, lettuce and sauce were fresh. 1 chicken taco: cold chicken, lettuce and other insides fresh, this taco was double wrapped not sure why the fish & shrimp tacos were not as they seemed to contain more contents. 1 order of maduros: receiving 1 star because these were actually good and lukewarm 1 carnitas taco: nothing special 1 chorizo taco: burnt chorizo 1 carne asada enchilada: cold, if u like lots of radishes, tomato slices, and uncut red onions in your enchiladas the one they make is perfect. The enchiladas did not seem to be wrapped very well or at all. They did a great job of filling our containers with limes, radishes, cucumbers (inedible), and lettuce if that's something you're craving. I'm not sure how 5 tacos, 1 order of maduros, and an order of enchiladas takes an hour and still ends up being cold. I would not recommend this to anyone. I'm not sure who is conducting their safety trainings but during this COVID season the workers were not wearing their masks properly (wearing them on their chins and under their nose) and handling money, food, and personal items (their phone) with ungloved hands. We sanitized everything as best as we could before eating it but a lot of the food was inedible. We were really trying to support a local business during this crazy time. El Gallo Negro is has plenty of Mexican dishes, the menu is pretty extensive with a variety of entrees, appetizers, breakfasts, soups and desserts. The fish taco was huge but tasted like a mini burrito lettuce wrap more than a fish taco. I recommend ordering the elote which is a fresh corn dressed in Mayo and cotija cheese. The tacos de birria was a tasty option, three corn tortillas with a mildly spiced beef or goat stew and a consommé soup which doubled as a dipping sauce. read more

I was really disappointed by the food and service here. Came in after passing by it for 2 years since I frequent the gym a few doors down. So many regrets. The booths were oily and filthy and the one fork and napkin on the table we sat at was dirty and used. It looked like they had a few regulars dining in so I was optimistic initially. We shared a beef tostada and the mixed plate of grilled skirt steak, chicken, and shrimp. It came with rice and tortillas. The food was almost inedible. The meats were so overcooked that the chicken and steak were practically like jerky. The waitress barely said a word while taking our order and didn't check on us once or even crack a smile. I've been here a few times now. The food is cheap for the area and the place is nice enough. The service is subpar. Every single time I've gone, they get some part of my order just straight up wrong. For some reason, their delivery seems fast, but ordering to dine in seems to take ages. The food is pretty much you get what you pay for. The pork is often fatty and either over seasoned or barely any flavor. Haven't had the chicken but my partner was not a fan, insisting it was dry. It's a low cost meal, but you really get what you pay for. You can certainly do better for your money in the area, and honestly Jackson Heights isn't that far on the 7 and has generally higher quality spots for similar or them less money. I was told the food was good so I decided to buy a chicken salad to go. Something that's simple, yet possibly tasty. Well, when I got home I noticed that no dressing was given nor bread or tortillas as listed on the menu. So I called and asked if something was missing from my order and her response was, "The salad doesn't come with dressing and the menu is wrong because we don't give bread nor tortillas with chicken salad". El Gallo Negro is not the most amazing food ever, but it's tasty and consistent. Never had a bad burrito or taco there. My husband and I decided to try something different and boy, were we disappointed. Stay away from the Mole Poblano. It tasted burnt, and nowhere near the rich, savory, deep flavored moles I've had before. It reminded me of the time I was young and scorched the chocolate my sister and I were melting in what should've been in a double boiler, but we were being lazy and used 1 pot on high heat. There was no nuttiness, no garlic, no cinnamon, or any spices for that matter, just burnt chocolate and chilies. The chicken was tough and tasteless, and as if it were sitting around waiting to be dumped into the burnt mole. In fact, it tasted so old that it was probably close to its expectation date. Also, how can dark meat, bone-in chicken be so dry? It was beyond disappointing, it was downright disgusting. I wanted to call and get my money back, but didn't want to deal with arguing with the restaurant since I got it through DoorDash. Our chicken quesadilla appetizer was yummy though. read more

I ordered the Chiles Rellenos and it was beyond delicious! Very flavorful and the portions are very filling. The rice and beans were good too.. sometimes refried beans can be blahhh.. but these were seasoned well. El Gallo Negro 2 never disappoints! You can not go wrong with their food. I have purchased their birria tacos with consume, chalupas chicana, chorizo torta, chorizo al pastor and carnitas tacos, elote, nachos chicana and all of these items were so flavorful. Oh I also had their horchata...if you add a little rum it makes the drink so much better. Next time I'm going to get their quesabirria, mulitas and tortabirria because I know everything will taste good-Especially since their birria is so tasty. I also like the small pieces of lime, radish and cucumber they add on the side and the fact that their food is not spicy. So far the spiciest thing I ordered was the chorizo torta because it has jalapeños. Everything is always fresh and they prepare food fast. Definitely my favorite Mexican restaurant in College Point...much better than Homemade Taqueria. I would only get burritos from Homemade because their taco tortillas taste awful. read more

The margaritas are STRONG and TASTY! Only drank half and its already hittin. I like the chicken enchilada but I wish the salad came on the side as it kinda cools down the food. The mole poblano is not my typa sauce but if you like slightly sweet chicken then the chocolate mole sauce is for you. They gave extra tortillas and a good amount of rice and beans.
