The host was also the bartender and the server. We were offered a basket of chips and salsa and the chips were terrible. They were so hard so either stale or under cooked. They literally hurt to bite into. The 3 salsas looked pretty, but I wasn't a fan of the taste of any. They did have a very large drink menu. They drinks had fun names. This was an unexpected surprise. When I showed up my friend and I were the only ones in the restaurant which made me start to wonder if we made a poor decision but soon I knew we had stumbled upon a gem.. we were greeted so warmly I then had a Cantarito cocktail for the first time & it was delicious! (basically a Paloma with added citrus juices. I don't like sweet things and I was very happy that this was the perfect blend.) I ordered the Barbacoa which was very favorful I have celiac disease, so I was a bit concerned with it being gluten-free and safe. I had no issues. The server was semi knowledgeable regarding the menu however, he did not know as much as the kitchen. For example, he thought the chips were made in a shared fryer however, I was able to learn that they have a dedicated gluten-free fryer that they use for their chips and you can request other fried items to be done separately. This was a pretty standard American Mexican restaurant. It was pretty empty when we went in, but I think that was just the day we were there (New Years Day for dinner). Service was prompt and friendly, and we loved the spacious booth that we were sat at. I ordered the burrito which was quite good, and my husband ordered the verde enchiladas - which were weird... they weren't tightly wrapped so it was almost like a weird casserole of undercooked corn tortillas, diced (not shredded) chicken and verde enchilada sauce. The reviews of this restaurant are all over the place. Recently dined there. Staff was friendly. Ambiance was good . Meal was average. Probably wouldn't run back but if you're looking for something close you might enjoy it. Charged $1.75 for a quarter cup of runny sour cream. The parking lot is usually very empty, so that tells you something. I think with a better chef this place could shine. read more

If I didn't look this place up, I wouldn't have known about it. My friends and I were at the Morton Arboretum and wanted to grab some food, this place is close by and did not disappoint. The place was quiet (snowy day) but there were a lot of staff so it made it feel like a full restaurant. We started with some chicken tortilla soup, which I was not impressed with because it came out cold and tasted like tomato sauce. The chips and salsa were actually really good, you get 3 different sauces and they will give you more if you ask. The steak tacos were good they were your regular tacos you eat places, but the birria tacos were to die for. My friend ordered the birria tacos and I wanted to change my order after trying hers. We unfortunately didn't get any drinks, however they have margarita towers/pitchers which are fairly priced. The staff was very friendly and lively. We ate at El Gran Agave for a ladies night dinner on a Friday. It was our first time. The atmosphere was okay and it was not very crowded. The server, Megan, was attentive and kept our drinks coming. WOW....El Gran Agave is the best kept secret ( we have to let it out) of an outstanding restaurant serving delicious Mexican food in the western suburbs. We love this restaurant for the authentic flavors , generous servings and exceptional service that they always provide. The restaurant is lovely inside with ample seating and a huge bar. The drink menu is extensive as well and the margarites are yummy and large. The restaurant is great for couples or families. All three of us tried the chicken with mole sauce, but we universally agreed that while the sauce was complex and interesting, the chicken tasted a bit gamy and it got more pronounced as the dish cooled. I got the house margarita, which was tasty, but despite being big enough to "baptize a baby in" as a fellow diner put it, I felt no intoxicating power...and I am a lightweight. If you come on a birthday, be aware that you will be adorned with sombreros and beset by sparklers and singing, as we witnessed at a nearby table... This is a lovely restaurant that not only has good food but also delicious drinks. The owner is welcoming to everyone and supports local nonprofits, which is a plus. If you haven't visited El Gran Agave yet, don't hesitate to check it out. The Guayaba and Blood Orange and Cantarito are my favorite drinks paired with a Tampiqueña or Steak Molcajete.
