A group of friends and I stopped here on our Taco Tour and I was excited to check them out because I'd never been. Tacos el Caporal has a pretty decent amount of seating (more than I expected), so we were able to find seating for our group of six easily. They were super busy with tons of takeout orders when we stopped in around 6:30 pm on a Saturday, but we got our orders in and the food came out pretty fast for how busy they were. They give you free chips and salsa, which was nice. They also take your order at the table. Since we were doing a taco tour, I got two tacos--one barbacoa and one asada. When the food came out, we also got a plate of toppings: grilled spring onions, jalapeno, limes, and radishes. The grilled onions are so delicious! But we only got two for the table and we had three people, so that was kind of a bummer. You might want to request more, because they are sweet and charred and you just have to try them! The tacos come with onion, cilantro, lettuce, and tomato which I thought was interesting as it's a little different than other authentic places. The tortillas were good and not too dry, and the meat was really flavorful. The pieces of steak were a little too big and tough in some instances, but the flavor was great--salty and delicious with some crispy bites. The barbacoa was tender and flavorful as well. I would definitely get the barbacoa again. I might get the steak in a different vehicle like a quesadilla. The larger pieces made it a little tough to eat in a taco form. Prices listed include a 2.9% discount for paying in cash, so keep that in mind. I would definitely go back and try other types of tacos and other menu items. It's nice to get table service and the extras, so for me this place is elevated from some of the other quick taco joints in the area.

This place is a true diamond in the rough. Between this place and San Jose you are surely going to get a genuine Mexican fix. Great food, great staff and an excellent alambres with shrimp that will give your life new meaning.

Good takes a while to get but they make it all fresh

Pretty good Mexican food. Not text Mex. Pretty authentic. Is in the Mexican area of Grand Rapids. Carne asada is very tasty. Steak nachos were really good. Plenty of good will not leave hungry and possibly go home with a to go box

First time going here I usually go to the one on 28th. But the one on 28th street didn't answered. And I love how good my wet burrito was , however not a fan of the chicken quesadilla. The chicken was dry and just didn't have a wow factor for me. I also feel that I could've of gotten more spicy sauce based on how much food I ordered. Otherwise the service was good overall.

It has since closed permanently. It is now tacos el cunado. Food is nothing like el caporal. We won't be back.

The waitress was friendly and busy. The seating was a little tight depending on where you sit. Our table was almost blended into the one next to us. The food was good. The menu is partially in Mexican, so be prepared to either use a translation app or guess what you're getting based on photos. We ordered or thought we ordered the #9 lunch but got something a bit different but still very tasty. The plate was full of all the standard stuff, beans, rice, salad, main dish. The chicken under the cheese was delicious and moist. The beans and rice were flavorful without being dry. The salsa was unique. It was something of an acquired taste. The margarita flight was delicious! The prickly pear and traditional were our favorites. The blue one was a close second or third. The mango with the spicy rum was our least.

I don't know what they put in their salsa but I can't stop thinking about it. The food was delicious! I got alambre with no cheese (later on was told by staff that alambre is fajitas with cheese so I basically got fajitas), my friends got a shrimp plate, burrito plate, tacos and three meats plate. The service was ok when we went. It was busy so we had a hard time finding our server to get more salsa or drinks and my vegan friend had a hard time getting her guacamole and chips that they forgot about. It also wasn't vegan friendly and that was the only option my friend had. Other than the wait and it being busy, I appreciated that our waiter brought out a sombrero and we sang happy birthday to our friend. I would go back here again because the food was delicious, but I'm mindful that I may have to wait on service when they're busy.

The menu consists of your typical items like tacos, burritos, Panchos (nachos), tortas, and more. They also have a lunch special and a daily deal (3 tacos, rice, and beans for $12.50 but no mix and match proteins). Since it was taco tuesday, tacos were $2.50. Nate got three tacos (al pastor, asada, and tinga) and I got a wet burrito with asada. We also ordered a horchata to share and chips and salsa. They have some dine in space but were doing a lot of takeout orders while we were there. Our chips and salsa came out first and the rest of our food shortly after that. The tacos came without toppings since you can load them up with their salsa/toppings bar. The tacos were super stuffed with meat! The burrito was massive - we shared it and still had leftovers for the next day. I tried each of the tacos and they were all delicious. The meats were not dry and again the portions were generous. I really liked the burrito as it was full of meat, cheese, beans, rice, guacamole, lettuce... it had it all. I wish the fillings were mixed up a bit more but it was so tasty. Service was great - we were asked how our meal was and they cleared our table when we were done. I'm really glad we finally made it to Poncho's Tacos and will definitely keep them on my Taco Tuesday list for the future!

These are amazing. His former favorite taco place, El Cunado, are skimpy on filling and he didn't care for their pastor (his fav). At Panchos he is in HEAVEN! He LOVES the Al pastor tacos here and on taco Tuesday they are $2.50 each. We both also really like the Asada. I also got a small rice, but prob wouldn't order again. It was $2.50 for maybe 3/4 of a cup. The online pics show a bigger box, but that wasn't the serving I received. It is cash only so be prepared. If in a pinch, there is an atm onsite!

Of course, as with any great Mexican restaurant, you are greeted with delicious chips and salsa shortly after being seated - pure Mex has some of the best!! They'll refill at your request! Also ask for some of the house hot sauce as that only elevates the flavors! We have honestly loved everything we've tried from Pure Mex, and that is much of their menu, but some of our favs are the queso fundido, the Anaheim tacos, the fish tacos, Choripollo, and Arroz con with whichever protein you love most, or a combo of them all!! :) And of course, the MARGARITAS!!! So fresh and so good, every single time! The service at Pure Mex is always friendly and usually very fast!! The atmosphere is clean, open, and feels trendy! We love the side of the dining room that is screened in, where the windows can lift and let the fresh air flow! Give this place a try, from someone whose absolute favorite cuisine is Mexican, I think it's very unlikely that you'll be disappointed! :)
