Some of the best tamales, Quesabirrias, and tostadas in the Grand Rapids area! I highly recommend this place! Our service was quick and the food was delicious! Very calm and chill vibe. Their Barbacoa is delicious and highly recommended! Will definitely be back again and again!

I created my own salad combo.

The food is so very good and you gotta try there buffet on the different days. I love to eat here as much as I can. Mary is a good friend of mine and have known her for many years.

    Grand opening in Eastown

This review is for the grand opening of the Eastown location. I don't know the back story of why the 2nd location was delayed but I saw on their FB Page that it was supposed to open in April, then May but now they are finally opened! This restaurant is at the intersection where Wolfgangs is. The interior is bright and clean with pictures of their food and plenty of tables for dine in. There's 1-2 tables right outside for outdoor seating. They ran a tamales meal special as well as chips and salsa. I got 1 order of spicy chicken tamales meal and 1 jalapeño & cheese tamales supreme meal - both came with rice and beans. The spicy chicken wasn't spicy for me. I did ask for extra hot salsa so that did the trick. The rice was very good and I ate all the beans which isn't something I normally enjoy. The staff was very kind. They were busy the whole day and they seem to be quite efficient. The owner thanked me for my order and coming between serving guests and preparing the take out orders. I think they did a great job for the amount of traffic they had. I love supporting local small businesses especially during Covid times. The price was very reasonable and I hope they continue with daily specials. Their second location in Eastown is close to some of the bars and restaurants so I hope they do well.

    "Small" quesadilla with chorizo

My spouse loves tamales, so here we are. I can tell you right away, we will certainly be back. They have many kinds of tamales, all are $1.99 each, or their daily special is 2 tamales with rice and beans for $4.99- what a deal!! They also have a lunch buffet that looked great, but I didnt feel I was hungry enough to get a good value- i plan to come back to try it, as it had multiple types of dishes I'd like to try (mole, steak, shrimp, menudo, pozole etc). I ended up getting the small quesadilla with chorizo. It was totally not small and I found it filling! Very tasty. The salsas were both spicy to me. We also got horchata, always great. My spouse got thr tamales special with 1 chicken and 1 pineapple (!!!) and he loved them. He said the pineapple was like a dessert tamale! We will definitely be back to try more. They also have a full dessert menu, ice creams and treats like mangonadas as well as stuff like tres leches cake. This is a humble place, clearly an old convenience store- but it's awesome and you gotta try it!

Assorted tamales (way too many) and rice & beans

I'm no tamale connoisseur but Tamales Mary makes some really great tamales! I stopped in around noon for a to-go lunch. They have a buffet during the week (and on Wednesday it's all tamales) but I wanted to just get a couple to share with my boyfriend. We ended up getting 6 tamales due to a minor misunderstanding (we both thought the girl at the counter said they were out of chicken, so we ordered 2 more to replace the chicken ones we thought we weren't getting)... not a big deal. Just way too much food! The tamales were ready quickly and when we got back to work they were still steaming hot! The restaurant itself is a former 7-11 but there is quite a bit of seating and a large parking lot which is nice. You can pick from 10+ kinds of tamales, including sweet dessert tamales which I'd never seen before. We got chicken, shredded beef, pork and black bean/cheese. I tried the chicken, a bit of the beef and the black bean/cheese tamales - all were great, not dry at all with great flavors but I liked the chicken the best. I wish the chicken and beef were spicier. (Especially since the sign indicated pollo verde was spicy) We also got a side of rice and beans which was definitely not necessary. The tamales were huge! The total was $14 for everything, which I thought was pretty reasonable since it will be at least 2 meals for 2 people. (Probably more!) Definitely check this place out if you're a fan of authentic Mexican food. They do have tacos/quesadillas/burritos as well as a dessert case with cake, flan and some parfait looking items.

Green chicken and chicken mole - lunch special

Set your expectations correctly and you'll be blown away. Authentic Mexican food specializing in tamales! The place is an old (what I think was a) Seven Eleven. It's nothing to write home about. But they have booths for dining in, or get your food to go. Cheap! $1.99 per tamale or you can get the lunch special for $4.99 and that includes 2 tamales of your choice plus a side of beans and rice. I LOVED the chicken mole tamale. Right amount of spice and not dry at all. I'm highly considering catering from here next time I have the need. Cheap and super good!

Food was excellent and hot. I was craving tamales and could not find a good place in Holland so this place was suggested to me. The tamales were huge and had lots of meat instead of lots of masa. I will definitely return. It does not look like much from the outside but don't let that fool you, I think you will be pleasantly surprised. The prices were also very reasonable.

Are there other menu items besides tamales?

Yes, they have tacos and other traditional Mexican items and a cooler full of Jarritos. On Tuesdays they have a taco buffet and Wednesday is the talames buffet.

We ordered or thought we ordered the #9 lunch but got something a bit different but still very tasty. The plate was full of all the standard stuff, beans, rice, salad, main dish. The chicken under the cheese was delicious and moist. The beans and rice were flavorful without being dry. The salsa was unique. It was something of an acquired taste. The margarita flight was delicious! The prickly pear and traditional were our favorites. The blue one was a close second or third. The mango with the spicy rum was our least.

I don't know what they put in their salsa but I can't stop thinking about it. The food was delicious! I got alambre with no cheese (later on was told by staff that alambre is fajitas with cheese so I basically got fajitas), my friends got a shrimp plate, burrito plate, tacos and three meats plate. The service was ok when we went. It was busy so we had a hard time finding our server to get more salsa or drinks and my vegan friend had a hard time getting her guacamole and chips that they forgot about. It also wasn't vegan friendly and that was the only option my friend had. Other than the wait and it being busy, I appreciated that our waiter brought out a sombrero and we sang happy birthday to our friend. I would go back here again because the food was delicious, but I'm mindful that I may have to wait on service when they're busy.

The menu consists of your typical items like tacos, burritos, Panchos (nachos), tortas, and more. They also have a lunch special and a daily deal (3 tacos, rice, and beans for $12.50 but no mix and match proteins). Since it was taco tuesday, tacos were $2.50. Nate got three tacos (al pastor, asada, and tinga) and I got a wet burrito with asada. We also ordered a horchata to share and chips and salsa. They have some dine in space but were doing a lot of takeout orders while we were there. Our chips and salsa came out first and the rest of our food shortly after that. The tacos came without toppings since you can load them up with their salsa/toppings bar. The tacos were super stuffed with meat! The burrito was massive - we shared it and still had leftovers for the next day. I tried each of the tacos and they were all delicious. The meats were not dry and again the portions were generous. I really liked the burrito as it was full of meat, cheese, beans, rice, guacamole, lettuce... it had it all. I wish the fillings were mixed up a bit more but it was so tasty. Service was great - we were asked how our meal was and they cleared our table when we were done. I'm really glad we finally made it to Poncho's Tacos and will definitely keep them on my Taco Tuesday list for the future!

It was $2.50 for maybe 3/4 of a cup. The online pics show a bigger box, but that wasn't the serving I received. It is cash only so be prepared. If in a pinch, there is an atm onsite!
