For a delicious, speedy lunch, Tamales Mary is the way to go. Within seconds of sitting down, an employee brought out my plate of tamales. No complaints here, as the tamales were fresh and hot. I tried the three vegetarian offerings of the day--pepper and cheese, black beans and cheese, and jalapeño and cheese--plus a pineapple tamale. All were superb, especially with the slathering of some salsas on the savory tamales. I was really pleased that I could see and taste all of the ingredients. Since it was hot and humid outside, the paletas were calling to me. Peering into the freezer, I saw a nice variety of flavors, such as mangonada, tamarind, nance, and cookies and cream. Rating the food truck and restaurant! The food truck is amazing. I heartily recommend the birria and carne tacos. A smidge pricey at $4 a taco, but they were authentic and a decent amount of meat. I also had a green chicken tamale and it was great! Sometimes items can be a little spicy -I got the guac and chips once and I couldn't eat them. But then other items like the tacos are spice perfect. We've also tried the weekday lunch buffet. It was good! Not a huge selection of food, but it was good. Tamales Mary is one of my favorite local spots for tamales. I always order their rajas and red pork tamales which are generously sized. I also really love their salsa, and they provide both a green and red one. Loved that their salsas come in convenient packets and they even have their logo! We came for the lunch buffet and we were surprised how good it was. The beef tasted really good and I liked that you could make tacos or nachos how you wanted it. Overall, for the price, I think it's a good deal and we left full and satisfied. We will be back to try the tamales. read more

Service is nice, I have not had a bad experience at all. Easy ordering, quick service. Now the food, absolutely spectacular. This review is for the grand opening of the Eastown location. I don't know the back story of why the 2nd location was delayed but I saw on their FB Page that it was supposed to open in April, then May but now they are finally opened! This restaurant is at the intersection where Wolfgangs is. The interior is bright and clean with pictures of their food and plenty of tables for dine in. There's 1-2 tables right outside for outdoor seating. They ran a tamales meal special as well as chips and salsa. I got 1 order of spicy chicken tamales meal and 1 jalapeño & cheese tamales supreme meal - both came with rice and beans. The spicy chicken wasn't spicy for me. I did ask for extra hot salsa so that did the trick. The rice was very good and I ate all the beans which isn't something I normally enjoy. The staff was very kind. They were busy the whole day and they seem to be quite efficient. The owner thanked me for my order and coming between serving guests and preparing the take out orders. I think they did a great job for the amount of traffic they had. I love supporting local small businesses especially during Covid times. The price was very reasonable and I hope they continue with daily specials. Their second location in Eastown is close to some of the bars and restaurants so I hope they do well. read more

Went in for a quick bite to eat while we waited on something else to do in Grand Rapids and we were not disappointed. I preferred 2 chorizo tacos and a horchata. Being very familiar with Mexican food I was very very happy with the food and service. It was authentic and resembled the food I had grown up on. 10/10 would recommend. Only thing to be aware of when coming here is the lack of parking. This is no fault of the business but just an in general notice. There is parking in the street but will be paid parking. They have many kinds of tamales, all are $1.99 each, or their daily special is 2 tamales with rice and beans for $4.99- what a deal!! My spouse got thr tamales special with 1 chicken and 1 pineapple (!!!) and he loved them. He said the pineapple was like a dessert tamale! We will definitely be back to try more. I'm no tamale connoisseur but Tamales Mary makes some really great tamales! I stopped in around noon for a to-go lunch. They have a buffet during the week (and on Wednesday it's all tamales) but I wanted to just get a couple to share with my boyfriend. We ended up getting 6 tamales due to a minor misunderstanding (we both thought the girl at the counter said they were out of chicken, so we ordered 2 more to replace the chicken ones we thought we weren't getting)... not a big deal. Just way too much food! The tamales were ready quickly and when we got back to work they were still steaming hot! The restaurant itself is a former 7-11 but there is quite a bit of seating and a large parking lot which is nice. You can pick from 10+ kinds of tamales, including sweet dessert tamales which I'd never seen before. We got chicken, shredded beef, pork and black bean/cheese. I tried the chicken, a bit of the beef and the black bean/cheese tamales - all were great, not dry at all with great flavors but I liked the chicken the best. I wish the chicken and beef were spicier. (Especially since the sign indicated pollo verde was spicy) We also got a side of rice and beans which was definitely not necessary. The tamales were huge! The total was $14 for everything, which I thought was pretty reasonable since it will be at least 2 meals for 2 people. (Probably more!) Definitely check this place out if you're a fan of authentic Mexican food. They do have tacos/quesadillas/burritos as well as a dessert case with cake, flan and some parfait looking items. read more

I had a really good food experience here. Inexpensive, delicious, very good service and decent vegetarian options. It's a simple business model: tamales, tamales, tamales! They've got some other Mexican fare but i just suggest trying as many different tamales there as you can because they have about 25 options total and it's one of the only tamal games in town. It was my first visit, so I order two bell pepper tamales and two black bean tamales. I wasn't really sure what to expect as far as size, but these ones were MASSIVE. Seriously. They way my family makes them is with more filling and a light corn masa coating. Tamales Mary's tamales are a ton of filling AND a ton of corn. They're equal to about two of the tamales i grew up eating. I could barely get through two out of the four that i ordered and i took the others home. Well sorry but these tamales do not measure up. They wouldn't stay in business in Texas long. Way too much bland masa per tamale. No seasoning in the masa itself and seasoning of the pork filling isn't very good either. Having made and eaten thousands of tamales I can honestly say these just aren't very good. All my employees who tried these tamales were also unimpressed simply because they have had vastly superior tasting ones prior to sampling these. read more

Ajua! These tamales are good, and a great find in Grand Rapids. Went here on a Saturday afternoon and they had so many kinds of tamales my head spun like a wheel of 100 huapangeros en McAllen. Traditional (for me at least) pork in red sauce, but also con rajas(peppers), camarones(shrimp), chicken, pork rib, pork in green sauce. Also chicken en mole and two sweet tamales-strawberry and raisin. Some were wrapped in corn and some in banana. I had the mole and Rajas which were both excellent. Mole in tamales should be much more common. The masa was seasoned perfectly, moist and delicate-even when I reheated the extras the next day. (The pics are from the next day) I wouldn't order the shrimp again-but some may like it but I have an aversion to shrimp in the shell still. Overall though these are the best tamales I've had in years. I would give it 5 stars if the seating were more comfortable and the environment a bit more polished. I wasn't expecting anything fancy, but this was pretty rundown. Maybe if I eat a lot of tamales they could put some of the funds into menus? Or different seating? You can also get tamales to go so that's a great option. Also FYI the sign outside still says el pollo so don't be confused--delicious tamales await you inside. read more

They were as good if not better than the ones I get from my friends mom (don't tell). They have all you can eat Buffett's for lunch and dinner every day. One of the best tamale places I've found in West Michigan. Tamales are their focus and you can tell from the menu when you walk in. The so offer common Mexican fare as well with Tacos, burritos, and the like. The also started doing a tamale buffet on Wednesday. I can usually get two tamales and a Jarrito Soda for under $7 and I'm golden. The Tamale buffet is about $10. I tried to put the hurt on them with the buffett, but I was only able to put down 3 tamales. Mary herself will also make the rounds and check in to see how the meal is going. They'll also run a deal on Fri and Sat with 12 tamales for $12, which is a great deal and could easily be an option for a weekend family meal or for lunches during the week.
