An actual hidden gem in key west. The most authentic Cuban food is at this spot. The chicken empanada was to DIE for. Soooo juicy and flavorful. The beef empanada was also great but If I had to pick one- get the chicken. You can skip the ham and cheese empanada... the croquettes were also AMAZING. I was on a hunt for them which is how I stumbled upon El habanero, and they did not disappoint. I could eat 20 of them! Amazing typical Cuban cafe fair! Reminded me of my childhood. Empanadas were made to perfection, especially dough - crispy, flaky, delightful. Low key in Key West is that a thing? Here it is as this was just what we were searching for to avoid the crowds! They are located in a strip mall next to a five guys so don't overlook them as you just might miss it! So I went with a breakfast sandwich it had it had Cuban steak eggs some cheese on Cuban bread it was totally yummy and had lot of flavor especially the bread but the real star here was the churros they were hot fresh and just took me back to the days in Mexico which was a huge win for me as good churros are hard to find! Overall this is a small spot that we grabbed some quick breakfast from and it was tasty hot and just good if I lived in the area I'd totally come here every so often! read more

first, The employee was super nice. But, we ordered street tacos And There was absolutely no flavor to them. Looks like I went to Taco Bell, they were not street tacos. I paid another $8.99 for chips, salsa and guacamole and I got a plate of chips with a tiny ramekin of picante sauce along with a holy guacamole plastic little mini container. very disappointed. read more

El Habanero is a great tiny spot in Key West where you can get an authentic cuban coffee, croquetas, tostadas, and small breakfast which are the staples of the true-Latinos from Miami. Think of "La ventanita" (the little window) that is so common in Miami. This place was needed in Key West, and they were exceptional! The coffee is the real deal. The cafe con leche was exceptional and those coladitas, perfect. This restaurant could be easily your daily morning go to before you go to work. read more

The breakfast was really out of the world! The plantain omelette is quite a novel and tasty take on the traditional. But, apart from a fantastic Cuban breakfast, my wife and I want to share a most uplifting experience at the restaurant. My wife upon leaving, forgot her purse at the restaurant...and totally forgot about it on our drive back from Key West to Miami. After driving out an hour and half, we realized that the purse was missing. So we called the restaurant and spoke to the associate, Michael, who confirmed that he had the purse and was safe with him. Since driving back was another 90 minutes and his restaurant was closing in 30 minutes, he took extra effort to leave it with with the shop next door with clear instructions to return it to us on our arrival. Later today, we returned to 5 Guys burger next door and picked up the purse, thanks to the timely, thoughtful help from Michael. We stayed across the street from El Habanero during our stay in Key West. We had just left Miami where we had a pretty mediocre experience at La Carreta by Calle Ocho. That place was so mid I cannot even. Well, friends, my frown was turned upside down because the sandwich Cubano at El Habanero was GREAT. Truly great. Also, they serve Cuban toast on the same pressed bread for like $2. We were there every morning getting cafe con leche and toast. I highly recommend this easily overlooked little gem. If you're staying at Parrot Key, march your behind across the street and go to the back side of Five Guys. Worth it. read more
