Great Mexican in the heart of New Ro! We were originally supposed to meet (a total of 6 of us), at a different restaurant for lunch...but that place was only doing takeout or delivery. The second spot we tried was closed on Wednesdays (go figure). Finally arrived at El Herradura and thankful we found it! I kept it simple-had two Mexican (street) tacos: pollo (chicken). I threw some of the awesomely spicy salsa (provided with excellent tortilla chips for the table) and buzz-sawed through both of those tacos. Delish! I remember it was pretty good once. I had the chicken enchilada mole tonight. The mole was sweet and flavorless. The tortillas were soggy, the chicken was like bland rubber. The lettuce in the salad was watery and limp as if it were just defrosted with bottled French dressing(?), the guacamole had neither texture nor taste. The refried beans were mush soup. The prices are good and the food is great. Love the steak alambres, sooo good. The staff is always good and they don't bother you once you've paid your bill. We usually come here with good friends to enjoy the evening with. Awesome for dates or just to hang with family and friends. You always know the food is fresh when you order guacamole they bring a rolling cart to your table and prepare it right in front of you. The music they play is also very welcoming for my Puerto Rican side lol. My daughters Spanish roots come out as well when she tries to bust a move lol. Not my first visit here! Always very good. Tonight was exceptionally good! Went with different menu items, then our norm! My husband went with fish tacos, and a grilled shrimp taco! They were very full and full of taste!! I went with the item on the seafood column. (Oops forgot the name). It was very very good. It was calamari, shrimp and octopus in a chipotle sauce with red and green peppers! I don't usually do green and red peppers, but I did this time! The calamari was so very tender! Great flavor!! WHAT A SPOT!! I absolutely adored this place! I don't really know where to start from...the decoration, the food, the service?!Everything was so good! The decoration, the menu, the food, the drinks, even the bathrooms shout 'Mexico'!! Very warm and cozy atmosphere and friendly stuff. All the drinks were amazing but I particularly liked the 'coconut pina colada' which was served with fresh shredded coconut. Wow! Detail that makes a difference: they have different glasses for each of the coctails. Nice! Starters and entrees were fresh and delicious. I had the steak which was served with sausages and melted cheese on top. Excellent choice! Detail that makes a difference: when you order guacamole, they bring a rolling cart to your table and they make it at the spot! The only disadvantage was that they brought us the main dishes 45 mins after we had ordered but that might be understandable since most of us had ordered steaks-well done. Check was reasonable. I'm not really a fan of Mexican food (I lived in California & Texas for over a year, and have had enough Mexican food for a couple of lifetimes), so take this review with a grain of salt. The place itself is very friendly, and the atmosphere borders on over-the-top-Mexican. My family had a going-away dinner for an uncle of mine who travels to Mexico once or twice a year, not doing the touristy stuff, but hanging out with the locals, and he chose this spot, so that must say something about the restaurant and its food. One thing that I will comment on: it was a very cold and windy night, and in spite of the fact that we were in the center of the restaurant, I felt the wind every time the door opened and had to spend the entire night with my coat on. They have a wide variety of typical Mexican food on the menu (burritos, tacos, enchiladas, flautas, tamales, etc.), but hardly any of it is vegetarian, for those of you who care about such things. Among the entrees, the only one that I saw that was meatless was the veggie quesadilla, which is what I ordered. Standard Mexican fare. My sister ordered huarachas, but she was expecting a hot meal, so she switched with my uncle, who had ordered alambres. Both of them ended up happy. My brother ordered chicken mole, which is supposed to be spicy, but I'm pretty sure they altered it for our "non-Mexican" palettes, because that chicken tasted a lot closer to Hershey's than authentic mole. I've had and actually like good mole. This was not it. Although mole is made with chocolate, it's not supposed to be sweet, which this was. I have been coming to this place for over ten years. The food and drinks never disappoint. You get a big portion of food. The staff is friendly. I wish they came up to you a bit more to ask if you need anything vs. fetching them but they come right away when you signal for them. This establishment is by far the most authentic Mexican restaurant in the Tri-State area. The food and service are exceptional. My boyfriend and I were craving Mexican and decided to give this place a shot. When we first got to the restaurant we realize the menus were a bit sticky, but decided to stay and give it a chance. Our waitress took so long to get us water is that they did not come until our food came out. The chips tasted stale along with the salsa tasting more like marinara sauce then an actual Mexican authentic salsa. We got Tostones which came out with our meal and tasted like hard hockey pucks rather than a fried delicacy that they usually are. My steak quesadilla definitely did not taste like steak and the food was extremely chewy and I could not even stomach to finish a quarter of it. My boyfriend got the tres enchiladas and he could not even take a few bites without realizing how unnatural the flavors were and how unappetizing the entire meal was. We left without finishing our food and paid the bill, the wait staff did not check on us or seem to care that we were leaving without even eating our food. Will never be coming again! read more

I wish I could give zero stars!! I am a frequent goer to la herradura, the Mexican restaurant on North Avenue but on this particular day they were closed. The menus are the same so I figured why not give it a shot! Very simple order of two chicken tortilla soups. After waiting 20 minutes, the soups were NOT even hot!! Nor did they appear like soup, more like porridge! Chunky and the consistency was weird. The taste - the soup was super salty and there were no tortilla chips in the soup! I had put in an order of 2 soups to go to bring to my parents. Normally with to go orders, you are given the chips and salsa (at least at la herradura on north avenue) - here I was simply given the two soups with no chips and salsa. When I asked the waitress about it, her response was "it is only given on orders of $50 or more" ...really?!?! Bad service and bad food! If you are looking for Mexican cuisine I strongly suggest the other la herradura (North Ave) ...a million times better! read more

I Absolutely love this spot! Great service, great drinks and very very very good Mexican food! The place is wonderful to dine if it's just two people or if your celebrating a birthday. It's a bit pricey, but you get what you pay for. Delicious food, friendly service, Tejano ambiance et al. Anyway, I digress. I had to comment when I saw La Herradurra's booze listing as 'beer & wine only.' I don't know which nincompoop posted that, but it's wrong. Flat out wrong. Question: What kind of Mexican restaurant does not serve margaritas? Answer: The kind I don't go to. The margaritas are this place are off the chain. Frozen strawberry, regular, whatever. They cost a fortune, but it's worth it. I suck down minimal three each visit. Do the same. Get toasted. 2 stars strictly for the decorations. I hate to write a bad review but sometimes it's mandatory due to poor service. I ordered a corona with cayenne pepper on the rim and was given a michelada. Most restaurants easily fix the problem by just getting the right drink but this waitress refused implying that it was my fault. So that's $10 wasted. Secondly, my girl ordered 2 tacos and they served her just the flour and meat w/ no toppings at all. No onions or cilantro on the side. Nothing. I found it strange that the server never even came around to notice that my girl was upset and that we needed something. My mixed fajitas that I ordered was sub-par and basically we were very disappointed in our overall dining experience. The guy who picked up the plates on my table had so many that he carried the two sauces (red and green)containers With his finger in it. Yes, the food has great flavor and yes they are plentiful.. nevertheless, the food has a mexican american feel to it... being latino and married to my mexican wife i can tell the difference... but overall good food!... but back to my point..horrible service... they need to be super attentive to their customers even if they are a party of 2 or 3... i noticed that they catered to the larger groups better than smaller groups.. but they have to keep in mind that all customers are paying important and valuable customers. .. iv had my fair share in working in the restaurant field ie: waiter, bartender, etc.... they need to reevaluate their management and their staff!!... The crust was so flakey and it was stuffed with so much chicken! Deeeelish. Also, we got two patron margarita bulldogs at 11$ each and it was pretty good. Overall, service was great and they made us feel at home. Went on a Friday night but wasn't packed. Maybe that's the reason why we had great service. Anyway the check came out to 65$ and we had half of the nachos and almost all of the chimichanga to take home. We were driving past New Rochelle on our way home to NJ from Mamaroneck. I found this place on yelp, and was reasonably in the mood for Mexican. When we got there, it looked a little strange (like, they bought the "mexican village" decor package), but there were quite a few occupied tables on a Thursday at 8pm, so . . . we proceed. I didn't want to take too long, so we stuck with the taco part of the menu. To say that I have been talking about the Mexican Al Pastor taco continually for almost a week is an understatement. I'm obsessed. It was soooo delicious. The wait staff was fine - just courteous and businesslike, not super chaty or friendly. But who cares? GO THERE AND GET YOURSELF AN AL PASTOR TACO!! The margarita was sadly made with margarita mix, not lime juice. And the mojito was too sweet. Such a bummer. A genuine margarita (made with lime juice, tequila, and triple sec) would have really hit the spot. BTW, i alwo had a carnitas taco - not as good as Al Pastor; my husband had an adobada mexican taco, and a steak fajita herradura taco . . . i think he liked both. Adobada much more than the steak fajita one. Plus the chips and salsa - esp verde - were great. The chicken always has this great texture where it comes with a slight crisp in your burrito. It really adds to it. I love the fact that they have giant vats of salsa near the bar and you get three types with chips to start your meal. They sure giant large beers and the margaritas are always good. This is my favorite spot in New Rochelle. With tons of Mexican options, this is the go to. This is my favorite place to get some authentic Mexican food. My friends and I joke that Mama Mexicana is cooking in the back - everything taste homemade! The portions are a nice size. The drinks are very strong and very tasty. The service is great. I've never been rushed , they allow you plenty of time to work on the large amount of food they give you. It is a little bit pricey for Mexican food, but I think it is worth the price. It's a small cozy restaurant, great for date night, or great for a few friends looking to have some drinks and catch up. The tacos here are so filling and the price is great! I love the chicken fajita taco with cheese. The guac is a must have and gets made right in front of you. They give you 3 salsas and I love all three. The green and the thinner red are spicier and delicious. You can also get pitchers of margaritas or sangria that make it more fun.
