This is one of my favorite Mexican restaurants, authentic the chicken soup with fresh broth and cilantro and avocado slices and fresh chunks of chicken inside. I've been coming here for years. I took mom and my grandma for yrs here unfortunately they passed away took my bf first time boyfriend there and now he's in love too. The chicken platter the chicken cutlet breaded It is so good. It's so thin and crispy. The staff is excellent. Salsas Galore in a Mexican Restaurant in New Rochelle Mexican restaurants aren't my favorites. But each cuisine and every authentic restaurant I try is a learning opportunity, and a glimpse of the culture and my way of meeting locals. That's why I don't only go to favorites, I try different places. And when I'm in the mood to ask questions to wait staff, restaurant managers, owners and chefs, I come right when they opened because it's not yet busy and the staff are usually more accommodating. Recently, we did go to a neighborhood Mexican spot with a big selection of Mexican classics. On this visit, I noticed that this cuisine is big on sauces and dips. John, the manager, educated us on their sauces that he was so proud of. First is salsa de arbol that are always two kinds, the verde (green) and the rojo (red). He even showed us the fried chilis used for making the red sauce. Another familiar sauce that I like is the pico de gallo, a fermented sauce usually made with fermenting agent such as rice water or whey. It's made with fresh chopped tomato, cilantro, onions, serrano peppers, salt and lime juice. Being fermented, adding pico de gallo to food is a big boost to the gut and microbiome. Then we have the sauces for our enchiladas (I forgot to take pictures) that are also two -- salsa verde and the mole. The salsa verde is distinct from the green salsa de arbol. It's made creamier and more herby. Then there is the mole, a classic Mexican sauce made with chocolate, dried chiles, peanuts, sesame seeds, cinnamon and anise. And of course, we had the guacamole, an avocado-based sauce that is popular all over the world. Last but not the least is the bottled Tapa Tio, it's a Mexican hot sauce brand that I often seen in many Mexican restaurants. We had an abundance of sauce. As New Mexicans, we are used to very good Mexican/New Mexican food. We stumbled upon The Mexican Corner Restaurant while headed elsewhere to eat. Struck by their menu, especially the birria quesadillas, as well as their friendly staff, we decided to eat there and were we ever glad! Their chips are freshly fried tortillas, puffy and crisp, nothing like any from a bag, accompanied by pico de gallo, tomatillo sauce and a red salsa, all deliciously spicy. Even the refried beans and rice were a cut above the usual. And the birria quesadillas were savory and so satisfying. The serving was plenty for the two of us, so a very reasonable dinner all around. Unassuming from the outside, but this place certainly checks a lot of boxes! The decor is modest and simple, but it makes for a homey atmosphere that feels far more authentic than most other glitzy Mexican restaurants. The staff were nice and the prices were pretty standard. Chips and salsa tasted homemade, but I found the salsa overwhelmingly sweet. Rest of the food was good- certainly above average- but nothing to rave home about. I got a carnitasb dish, and my sorry gringo ass was expecting shredded pork (like at Chipotle), so I was a little disappointed to find out cut into chunks... but let me tell you... that dish is delicious, served with rice, refried beans, avocado, and caramelized onion... I would have finished it, but then I'd soon be looking for a public bathroom and might have to resort to a port-o-potty on a construction site... definitely no-can-do! This is a fairly small restaurant, and the service is great. John, the owner, is on the floor and very approachable. Every restaurant owner knows that their restaurant is only half as good when they're not around... I've done it myself. John says he's been there for almost 30 years. Bravo, John... I got fish tacos, 2 fried & 1 grilled ($15) and they weren't good at all. The fried fish was soggy with grease, and tasteless, I got 3 tasteless sauces to go with it. I actually got a stomache ache after this meal which never happens to my iron clad tummy so I don't know how fresh the fish was? This is a simple, unassuming place, very clean, with outstanding service that makes the customer feel like family. This is our favorite Mexican restaurant. We keep trying new ones, just to explore, but keep coming back here. The atmosphere is simple, but homey and clean. We have gotten to know the husband/wife owners over the years, who are friendly and chatty with us whenever they are there. The wait staff is friendly, efficient and helpful. The food is fresh and authentic (to the extent we can attest as Americans). WOW. My boyfriend and I went here for a quick bite and as per usual it was amazing. The service is impeccable and you feel at home with chips and salsa so delicious and authentic. But not only is this my favorite Mexican restaurant in New Rochelle, it's probably my favorite Mexican restaurant outside of Mexico. I really like this place. Sure the seats could stand to be reupholstered, and the smoke from the kitchen gets into your hair. . . but so what? If you're that uppity go somewhere that keeps a spare "sports coat" on hand in case you didn't get a chance to pick your dinner jacket up from the dry cleaners. Ok, the food is good and the wait staff is as friendly as they can be (for English being their second language) but I don't mind, I'm no elitist. The portions are spot on for a grown man's appetite. By the time you shovel that last fork full into your gaping mouth you're completely full. . . and if you're like me (hate seeing food go to waste, and hate putting a stinky doggy bag in your car) you'll leave feeling satisfy on two levels. One because you ate, so now you're full and you're happy. . . and two, nothing went to waste. The food is always fresh, colorful, and flavorful. So give it a chance. I was originally going to the Colombian place next door but due to the wait and being hungry, we skipped over to the Mexican corner. Upon arriving the hostess was nice we were seated within minutes and greeted by our waiter Tito. The guacamole was good the lady who made it was super nice. They make it fresh at your table which is a cute detail. The margaritas are good, I had one in the rocks and had to switch it to frozen because it was too strong! Our waiter was bilingual but when we spoke to him in Spanish he would speak English when we spoke English he's speak Spanish. I honestly prefer he spoke Spanish because it was challenging to comprehend but no big deal. I specifically ask for Parmesan cheese because I DO NOT want melted cheese. He bring me a side of shredded cheese. We ordered the platter with carne asada chicken and shrimp cokes with rice beans and tortillas. We never received our tortillas, the portion of rice is a JOKE! Literally less than a spoonful it's like an ice cream scoop, I don't even know how to explain. The beans portion was more than the rice I had to order a second rice. Now the meats Was ridiculous. The shrimp was undercooked literally barely had color because they weren't cooked. The chicken cutlet was also undercooked you can tell as soon as you bit into it. We did not eat it. The steak was the only thing we were able to eat. By this time the restaurant was now busy the waiter is attending multiple tables and we were disgusted disappointed and couldn't even flag him down because when we waved he wouldn't even notice. My daughter had chicken tenders and it's literally chicken cutlet in strips and fried in bread crumbs but she ate them. So after we are disgusted with our food we ask for the check and are ready to go. We pay our bill and leave the tip in cash. The gratuity was NOT included and was OPTIONAL.... With the service we received we left less than 20% for a party of 4, but nonetheless WE LEFT A TIP! Tito was unappreciative and felt the need to follow us out the door and ask if we weren't leaving him a service tip to which I replied. The tip is in there. And he said this? I was in disbelief that he had the audacity. We took a loss with his bad service taking long for everything, having to get up to find him because we could never flag him down, with the bad food we didn't eat and decided not to complain about it, with missing our tortillas, and we paid our bill and left gracefully. That was distasteful and his behavior was worse than the undercooked food! Will never go there, I would've given the food another chance but TITOS service, is a deal breaker for me. I should have gone with the few negative reviews which seem to be accurate. The guacamole was watery and had no flavor, the pico de Gallo was sweet, chicken fajitas lacked chicken and flavor. This restaurant is so inviting! The doors were wide open letting in the summer air, and they were selling a large selection of aguas frescas at the entry. We tried pineapple and tamarindo. Large servings and very refreshing. The staff was very friendly and accommodating to our large group which included a few children. The food was very good! The servers were patient and attentive. My friend ordered the burrito and empanada combo and I had the flauta and quesadilla combo. You could tell the meat was freshly made, and we did not have to wait very long for the food. We also tried a freshly made drink called sorrel, which was very tasty. With everything we got, it only came up to about $23. I gave them a great tip because the servers definitely earned it. My two criticisms are the following: -Pico de gallo was not very tasty -sorrel drink did not taste like real jamaican sorrel (but then again it is a mexican restaurant, not a jamaican one). Decided to try this place for the first time and man was it a disappointment. First we got free chips and pico. But the pico was not pico. It was like a sweet pico and it was not authentic. Even after adding lime and salt it just didn't help it. I ordered two tacos carne Asada and the meat was so bland. It's like they didn't spice the meat at all. The rice and beans were nothing special. The horchata wasn't even authentic horchata. It was like a super water down horchata. Wasn't even sweet. Had to sweeten it up myself.
