For a Mexican spot, this location was pretty underwhelming. Nothing was hot, and there wasn't much spice at all. There also wasn't a lot of flavor. Everything felt watery, and while I understand that some locations may cater to people who prefer milder food with more moisture, it just didn't work for me. I had the beef birria. The texture was all right, but it was very saucy without much kick. It honestly tasted more like a generic meat filling rather than something with the bold flavor I'd normally associate with birria. The rice was forgettable, there were a lot of chips, and the drinks were okay. This was just an average spot. I wouldn't come back unless they made some noticeable improvements. This place hit the spot when I was craving comfort-style Mexican food. I sat at the bar and got the enchiladas suicas with the tomatillo sauce on the side. I think they may have added the cilantro cream sauce because I mentioned it after I saw it listed for another dish on the menu - not sure if it's usually on there - but was a great addition and would recommend. The whole dish was tasty. I did notice on the menu that their drinks are on the pricy side - 14 for a piña colada, for instance. This dissuaded me from getting one. She had a burrito that was a surf and turf burrito and I tried it. The cream sauce was amazing. My salmon was perfectly done. I've eaten here several times, always indoors, and the ambience is lovely--warm, inviting, and full of vibrant Mexican charm. The air conditioning is very strong, so I recommend bringing a sweater if you're gonna dine indoors during the summer. This visit, I was craving a frozen cocktail and a chance to sit outside, and they delivered on both counts. I started with a thick, creamy coconut margarita and later had a red sangria. Both were delicious, though I have to say--I really dislike when drinks are served in mason jars with handles. Give me my sangria in a proper wine glass, please. Nice corn tortilla salted chips are complementary with a nice tall bottle of thin salsa. The salsa was more like a sauce. There was a few specs of cilantro and onions, but not anything chunky. It was a beautiful evening to dine al fresco, and I indulged in the Molcajete--a hot stone bowl brimming with beef, pork, chicken, and (I suspect) some crumbled chorizo. The description had chorizos (plural) listed. I didn't see any chorizo unless as I said, it was crumbled up and mixed in on one side of the sauce The meat was served in a savory, occasionally spicy broth. For an extra five dollars, I added shrimp--three perfectly seasoned pieces that were flavorful, well-spiced, and very satisfying. I pulled out a whole split down the side roasted jalapeño, the parts of the broth still had some heavy heat, which again leaves new to believe that the chorizo was crumbled up in some of the sauce. Four warm tortillas arrived wrapped in aluminum foil; I would've preferred a tortilla warmer or basket for presentation. The size dish of smoky charro beans with bits of bacon were very good. The melted cheese was a nice touch--simple and satisfying--but it was the sizzling, slightly charred medley of meats, packed with bold flavor, that was the real highlight. The portion was massive, so I took half home, and it reheated surprisingly well. At home, I paired it with fresh a flour tortillas, which made for an equally satisfying second meal. The only letdown was my husband's salmon Veracruzan. It was dry and underwhelming. It was a beautiful plate. I mean it was a nice slice piece of fish. The vegetables he says were very flavorful. The slaw was pretty and a few slices ripe avocado finished his entree. Pouring some of the sauce for my dish didn't make the flavor of fish any more appealing or moistened. read more

The food was good, and the portions were generous, but our visit was ruined by the ($14) frozen margaritas, which we are convinced contained absolutely no alcohol. We love Rio Bravo. First of all, it's lovely inside. Someone put a lot of thought and care to use beautiful Talavera tiles from Mexico. This is such an iconic art that you see in restaurants and kitchens in Mexico. Next, I love the food here. Now, I know authentic Mexican food. I lived in many states there. I've had it all, Including chapulines. This is to say that a lot of that cuisine you will not see at Rio Bravo. And that's fine. Sometimes, you just want food you might only find at a tourist site. Like great mini chimichangas bursting with chicken for an app, a tremendous molcajete of guacamole at your table, fajitas, hard shell tacos, taco salad, Chardonnay creamy pecan sauce on an enchilada and a club quesadilla. Yes, they also have a very good Mole, carnitas, snapper veracruzano, and a wonderful selection of tequilas. But you will not find the more quintessential Mexican or regional dishes like huitlacoches, nopales, chiles en nogada, cochinita pibil, or pollo en pipián. If you know what those are and want those, there are places for you. At Rio Bravo, you will find delicious food Tex Mex/California inspired but done very well, with some genuine platos típicos. The sauces are very good, excellent chips, a mini carafe of salsa fresca, the requisite beans and rice, and no skimping on cheese, shredded chicken or beef. They constantly refill your water, ask if your food is great and if you need anything. They play great music. And they serve it all on Fiestaware. Great place for a couple or a crowd. This place has a great vibe and a sweet tendency on flavors. I had the Tacos Al pastor. They were very sweet, like BBQ sauce, but tasty. Not like the Al pastor I know from Mexico City, but more like a US version. It was a large portion. They had a decent tequila selection but not enough without additives. Almost every choice was a tequila with additives. Again, this caters more to the American palate. We had a side of Guacamole, spicy, and it was a very big serving. I had fond memories of celebrating at Rio Bravo Although I've not been here since Covid started, I gotta say this was a giant leap off a cliff. Service was dismal and disorganized. The lead server was just plain disinterested and rude. But what happened to the food? Steak burrito overflowing the plate? Only 5 small pieces of meat filled with mountain of rice. The taco truck in the gas station parking lot is infinitely better and half the price. The chicken fajitas were so over cooked that the meat felt like sawdust in your mouth. Greasy onion and stale tortillas, over warmed in the microwave. My steak was good, but cut so thin it was hard to eat it with a for. Chips and salsa were great, as was the Tres Leches cake. Overall no-one enjoyed the experience and I was sorry we didn't stay home and bbq. This place is officially crossed off the list and I'm sorry to see how bad it became. But I was compelled to come here to share my last experience at Rio Bravo. The food is solid. It's good. Not great, but good. We all ate our food. My steak fajitas were OK. The meat wasn't the best, quite stringy, but I ate most of it. The drinks were fine too. A bit light on the tequila in the margaritas, and quite sweet even tho we ordered just regular margs. But we had 2 each. The service was excellent. The cleanliness was what really put me off this time. The ladies room was absolutely filthy. My shoes stuck to the floor!! One soap dispenser was out. Paper (toilet tissue and paper towels) was everywhere. My dining companions noted that the men's room urinal had overflowed. We told these things to our waiter. Not sure if anything was done. This was at like 5pm. I'd hate to see the bathrooms at 10pm! There were also quite a few flies around. Not what you want to see while dining. I hope that they literally clean up their act. The indoor area looks very authentic Mexican style. The service was pretty quick and spot on as soon as we walked in. We've been enjoying going to this restaurant for a while now, and it has always been consistently good (I've always enjoyed the chimichangas). However, this past Sunday we had gotten food poisoning from this place. I had eaten the pork carnitas tacos, and it had the slaw, rice, and beans on the side. I'm not sure which item was the cause, but I have been extremely sick for two days. This has only been once since we have been going (and we've been going almost once a week for about a year now), but this experience has definitely made an impact on our thoughts about returning.
