We ordered takeout from El Huipil last night. Our order took over an hour and 15 minutes to be prepared, and after waiting at the restaurant for over 30 minutes, the manager realized our food had been sitting behind the counter the entire time (we had spotted the order upon arrival, pointed it out and were told it was not ours). We took our (now cold) dinner home and found: - An entire dinner missing from the order - Two Mexican salads, both missing avocado (part of the salad) - No salad dressing - Ceviche without any of the tortilla chips it is supposed to come with We called the restaurant and they were not apologetic. As a solution, they offered to provide a gift card for half the cost of our order if we drove to the restaurant to pick it up. Every single item we ordered, aside from one, was incorrect or missing, so I am wondering how this would be viewed by any professional manager or service business as an appropriate solution. I went once and they had a bartender who was making drinks not bad at all so we go back one evening for dinner we were so disappointed. The food was not so good it made me sick. It was not good at all. The service was not bad but they no bartender drinks were limited to just margaritas. Not everyone likes margaritas and in the rest no one knew how to make a different drink. El Huipil is tucked away behind Brook Kitchen and Tap. (It faces the Maynard center parking lot bounded by Main, Nason, and Summer Streets.) It's not much to look at from the outside, but don't let that put you off. They now have their liquor license and hence a full bar. Excellent margaritas. We enjoyed the food and the service was friendly. The place is small and they generally don't take reservations. If there is a line be sure to check in at the maitre d' desk which is slightly hidden to the right and behind you after you enter. The live music was very entertaining. read more

We saw there were some bad reviews but we figured it was just hangry people who didn't get their way... absolutely not. My fiancé and I both ordered chimichangas and they were... awful. We both asked for the same thing except I wanted sour cream and I ended up getting everything. They never asked to refill our water, the chicken in my chimichanga tasted microwaved, and was fatty and dry. We asked for queso and we were given microwaved shredded cheese. When I moved to the area five years ago, El Huipil was a pleasant surprise. Quiet, cheap and solid mole, pico, beans and chile rellenos. For some reason that changed a year or so ago and the food suddenly became below average. The air of authenticity departed with the Spanish-speaking wait staff and what was left was a bland facsimile of Mexican food. That's changed again. I just consumed some of the best pico de gallo I've ever had, slathered on beautiful chicken tamales. The frijoles are not yet up to par, but it might be they've deleted the lard from the recipe; my doctor would say that's a good thing. If you've left El Huipil swearing never to come back, come back. Yes, it is authentic Mexican food, but there are some poor, anti-customer policies in place that I politely asked the waitress to convey to the manager. We asked for water and were brought bottled water. That's a bad policy. We were asked if we'd like chips, salsa, and guacamole (!) which were enthusiastically agreed to. We were charged for them on the bill. That's a bad policy. My friend thought he read that his dinner came with sour cream. He didn't receive any so he asked for some. He wasn't told there was an extra charge, and surprise surprise! It showed up on the bill. If you're going to charge for items that are normally complimentary at Mexican restaurants, you have a responsibility to share that information with the customer. read more

For central MA, this is the most authentic Mexican you can get. Be warned: they will charge you for the chips, salsa and guacamole -it's not gratis and they don't say it when they ask if you want some. Worth getting though! Homemade chips, nice and stout. Awesome salsa, also homemade; really chunky. I have had the tongue burrito, and the carnitas burrito. Both were out of this world. The dinner burrito is more expensive but you get salad, guac and sour cream on the side, as well as rice and beans. The waitress asked if I wanted brown or red sauce on mine, and I chose brown. I wish I hadn't. It was just thin mole sauce and distracted from the awesome flavor of the carnitas. Let me say, the carnitas are SO good! It's moist, tender and really flavorful. Best I've ever had, and I've had a lot. They have horchata, and it's good. I had to ask for hot sauce, which struck me as odd considering it's the Mexican ketchup. Anyhoo, go here and eat hearty. El Huipil is awesome - I go here for lunch at least once a week, and the best dishes are their homemade flautas and tamales, their homemade guacamole, and my favorite, a pork chimichanga which is served loaded on a plate with refried beans, Spanish rice, tomatoes, spur cream guac and hot sauce. The best part, El Huipil is authentic and CHEAP - most dishes are between $5-8 and their platters are $10-12, and they give you alot of food. As William F. points out - their Take-out is not a high point, but does not deserve a single star. William, who takes Mexican food out? Mexican food needs to be eaten right away. Example - refried beans harden if they're not piping hot (who wants that?) Agreed - take-out is not their best area, but has NO bearing on their food quality or taste. They're not a Chinese restaurant, and therefore should not be judged by take-out. I would try it again, and eat there...you may be surprised. Definitely recommend their food over any of the chain Mexican restaurants (i.e. Margheritas). For burritos, however, El Huipil cannot compete against Annas or Boca Grade, but has Chipotle and Boloco beat easy. The food was very well seasoned and the service was great. The only issue was we were asked if we'd like chips, salsa, and guacamole which were enthusiastically agreed to. I've been meaning to try out this place for awhile, and finally got a chance to recently! Don't expect anything fancy here - you'll order from the counter (the man who works the register may be busy in the kitchen, so just be patient) and then have a seat at one of the tables or booths. The boy and I both got enchilada plates with red sauce. Two enchiladas are included, I chose to have one with shredded beef and one with carnitas. They were delicious! I do wish the red sauce had a bit more kick to it though. The carnitas enchilada was especially good. Pretty authentic, with fast service. They even have Mexican sodas with real cane sugar! I got a Mexi-coke and recall seeing Mexi-Sprite and Mexi-Fanta as well. I definitely recommend this place for good, cheap, Mexican eats. read more

I've had the opportunity to eat at El Huipil a couple of times now while passing through Maynard. The location, while downtown, is a bit peculiar, since I accessed the restaurant through a somewhat hidden parking lot. Prices are reasonable and the food is authentic. My understanding is that the owner had cooked in a number of restaurants closer to Boston, wanted to open up a Mexican restaurant and named the restaurant after an article of clothing. I've tried the quesadillas here with the choice of chorizo as my meat. The food was tasty indeed. I would recommend eating here while you're in town, plus as I witnessed during one of my visits to El Huipil, they will also host private parties. read more

So, I don't want to give this 2 stars because I'm local and think this place was and still can remain a good Mexican spot. Compared to a year ago, the food has gone down hill in terms of quality, and prices have gone up. They have made some good improvements inside to restaurant. Past two times I went there once eating in and once take out the food I had was mediocre at best. I got a carnitas burrito supreme last night for takeout, and when I bit into it, I got a mouthful of chewy sharp crispy stuck to bottom of reheated pork. It was obvious they had run out and have me scrapings on half and then reheated big chunks (that were more gelatinous) in the second half. Eat in I ordered the "made this day" Tamales One chicken and one pork, same exact consistency of meat in both of them, and no more than a spoonful buried in soggy corn. They did take his off the bill, but it shouldn't have been served, especially when I asked before ordering if they were made that day. Like a lot of eateries in this area they start out really good then start cutting corners and it results in its downfall. Will wait a while before going again. On a positive note, there homemade hot sauce is still the best! read more

I tried this spot because it had 4.5 stars on Yelp. I could tell immediately from the photograph that this was unlikely to be true, but... excuse me? First, let me say that this is a mom and pop restaurant, and the owners seem to be nice, authentically Mexican people, who have an extended family who visited the restaurant while we were there. The colors and sodas are authentic, too. But come on, 4.5 stars? The place looks out on an ugly parking lot in the center of Maynard, and the decor is bright but cheap looking. Immediate deduction of 1 star. There is no alcohol, which in a Mexican restaurant is an immediate deduction of another star. The food is just ok. I had the chicken mole, which was pretty good. My two companions were unable to eat their food. Minus another star, maybe two. Prices are expensive for what you get, although not expensive in absolute terms. Much better value can be found elsewhere. Minus another star. They get a star for authenticity. I would give them two stars overall if not for the other 4 and 5 star reviews, so I'm giving them just 1 to restore a little bit of reality to the overall review. I have no idea what the other reviewers were thinking when they rated this 5 stars. Not a place to go on first date if you think you might want a second date. read more

An unassuming storefront down in the parking lot behind the Halfway Cafe in Maynard. However, i believe Huipil has the best burrito in the Boston area and generally across the board great Mexican food. There is both counter service and table service so that even if you don't eat at the restaurant it is great takeout. Over the pastfew months beer and wine has been added to the menu. I would strongly recommend everyone give Huipil a try. read more

It was my first time there and the service woman was not helpful in explaining the menu and ordering system. ie, I ordered guacamole, and got just that. This place is just alright. I've had it twice. Their guacamole is pretty bland and tasteless, and they charge for chips and salsa for whatever reason. No other Mexican place I've ever been to has ever charged for chips/salsa. I've had the carnitas quesadilla and the chicken quesadilla. The carnitas was pretty dry, but the chicken was better. So many good reviews on yelp I had to try this restaurant. This restaurant has a good location with parking; sells mexican sodas; o.k. decor. That's about all the positives. What a disappointment. The chips were straight out of a bag - Tostitos. The Salsa and Guacamole were llke baby food and served in small plastic containers. The super burrito was raw (with no flavor) and the cheese enchiladas with the green sauce was bland. I cannot believe that the owners are not able to serve good Mexican food. Its not that hard. Throw some fresh tomatoes, serrano peppers, red onion, lime juice, olive oil and cilantro with a touch of garlic and salt and sugar into a food processor and you have yummy fresh salsa. read more

The waitresses are polite and the atmosphere is very casual and comfy. This is a place that you go to get great Mexican food that tastes like something "mom would make". To be fair, I've only been here twice: once a few years ago, and again last week. But neither time did I love it. Last week I had fish tacos, which were really awful: instead of pickled cabbage with pico de gallo or lime wedges, the fish was topped with very gloppy mayonnaise-heavy sliced red cabbage that I had to scrape off in order to eat the fish and tortillas. I mean, seriously, how hard is it to put some fish sticks on a tortilla and serve some decent garnishes? The cabbage-and-mayo topping was just awful. The rice and runny refritos topped with cheese were also pretty bland. The guacamole was edible but also bland. Some lime juice and chiles and cilantro would have helped. maybe some of the other things on the menu are great, but I can only advise people to stay away from the fish tacos. Yuck. read more

We weren't super hungry and it was late (and honestly lightweights when it comes to alcohol) so we just got a margarita to split, and their famous nachos. Okay food, okay service. Was ignored twice and had to go to the front of the restaurant before our order could be taken. Then it was time to pay, the gentleman came over with a handheld device. I was paying with a credit card. My mother has always told me to tip in cash. When I hit the 0 for tip on the handheld device the gentleman's attitude that was serving us switched instantaneously and he didn't respond to any of our requests then after. As we prepared to leave, I let him know I left the tip on the table and he cheered up wishing us a good remainder of the evening. I tipped 50% of the bill not because he was great or did anything extraordinary, but because of the pandemic that we are in and I know it's a tough industry. Nevertheless, I will never go back here.
