To be fair, I've only been here twice: once a few years ago, and again last week. But neither time did I love it. Last week I had fish tacos, which were really awful: instead of pickled cabbage with pico de gallo or lime wedges, the fish was topped with very gloppy mayonnaise-heavy sliced red cabbage that I had to scrape off in order to eat the fish and tortillas. I mean, seriously, how hard is it to put some fish sticks on a tortilla and serve some decent garnishes? The cabbage-and-mayo topping was just awful. The rice and runny refritos topped with cheese were also pretty bland. The guacamole was edible but also bland. Some lime juice and chiles and cilantro would have helped. maybe some of the other things on the menu are great, but I can only advise people to stay away from the fish tacos. Yuck. read more

The food is so so good. But the service is honestly horrible. My fiance and I ate here on 3/27/19. We weren't super hungry and it was late (and honestly lightweights when it comes to alcohol) so we just got a margarita to split, and their famous nachos. The waitress, I believe, presumed since we weren't spending a lot, that other tables were way more important. She never once checked in on us, while she waited on other tables and walked past us everytime. We were celebrating a promotion at work, and this honestly kind of ruined our night. read more

Okay food, okay service. Was ignored twice and had to go to the front of the restaurant before our order could be taken. Then it was time to pay, the gentleman came over with a handheld device. I was paying with a credit card. My mother has always told me to tip in cash. When I hit the 0 for tip on the handheld device the gentleman's attitude that was serving us switched instantaneously and he didn't respond to any of our requests then after. As we prepared to leave, I let him know I left the tip on the table and he cheered up wishing us a good remainder of the evening. I tipped 50% of the bill not because he was great or did anything extraordinary, but because of the pandemic that we are in and I know it's a tough industry. Nevertheless, I will never go back here. This is probably the best taquería I have found in Massachusetts. And for what it is worth, I grew up in Southern California and travel the country scouting out the best taquerías (not that I travel for the reason, but I am constantly on the road and that what I do when I travel). It would definitely satisfy anyone with truly "authentic" tastes, and the carne asada tacos (steak) were exceptional. So was the rice and beans, which is even more rare in Massachusetts. The atmosphere is of course casual, but also friendly. Was all gringos dining when I was there. But very, very good food. read more

My girlfriend and I have been visiting the Boston-Cape Cod area and were missing food from home; this place more than fulfilled our cravings! Its small, quaint, cute, and most importantly they know what they are doing with their flavors and cook-times/temps! My girlfriend was born and raised in CO and her family is from Mexico; I was born and raised in Albuquerque, NM and have lived in CO since moving there for college. We know our Mexican food very well and its safe to call this authentic. I ordered two food items: the first was two Tacos de Lengua (tongue), which is a notoriously difficult meat. if under or overcooked it can have a very unpleasant texture, and poor quality tongue is horrible; the tongue on these tacos was cooked PERFECTLY, and the taste was the best I've had yet - this means they use quality ingredients. It was also only lightly seasoned so they dont rely on overly bold seasonings to cover up any quality misgivings. These tacos were substantially better cooked (and slightly better seasoned) than the family owned/run taco shop down the road from us that is dear to my heart - thats saying a lot. Next I got the Carnitas Michocan - essentially pulled pork cooked with Mexican seasoning and oranges. Again the meat was cooked PERFECTLy and the level of seasoning was just right - enough to taste, but also little enough to let the combination of the sweat/savory/umame flavors of the meat and fresh oranges to shine. My girlfriend ordered the enchiladas and again we were more than happy with what was served: the tortillas tasted handmade, the meat was well seasoned (but not drowning in it), and the sauce seemed homemade and served in good proportion to the rest of the dish - ie the enchiladas were not absolutely drowning in cheese and sauce, as they often are in a lower quality restaurant. Even the drinks were well above par. My girlfriend got a Michelada - beer mixed with Clamato, lime, and salt. Again the proportion of the ingredients were spot on - and this is a drink my girlfriend has had many a time in Mexico, and we are very familiar with from back in Colorado. This was the best michelada we have had at a restaurant! I ordered a cocktail called Muerde Mi Chile and it was the perfect mix of tequila, tart (lime), and sweet (juices) with a hint of spice. This is a drink I am definitely going to do my best to recreate when I get home! Lastly, the service and atmosphere was great! Our waiter was very friendly from the start and only became even more so when he discovered I can (mostly) speak Spanish. He was very patient and simply seemed thankful for mu effort; it made for a fun, relaxing night out. There was also a guitar player who was quite talented and helped create a calm and inviting atmosphere. And all other waiters we interacted with were very nice and tried their best to make us feel well taken care of. I do see some notes about poor service and maybe this was not the standard for this place. Nevertheless, from what I saw, even if the waiters/waitresses were new they were at least trying and seemed to care about customer service - something that seems exceedingly rare as of late. I definitely recommend at least giving this restaurant a shot and will be stopping in the next time I visit the area. And frankly, many Mexican restaurants back in the midwest could take some notes from this place. read more

What a find! And it was a find because it is in the back behind the buildings on Main street off a parking lot (drove around the block a couple of times, finally found it behind the halfway cafe). Easy parking at least. Ok, so the place is nice enough clean looking and cozy. The wait staff was nice for NE where cracking a smile is done with the jaws of life (even though they usually have a heart of gold, I think the cold just freezes their face better than botox!) and I started with a Negro. Then had the best chorizo quesadilla ever, thin dough with a big of crips on it and really tasty cheese and chorizo without overpowering the whole dish. Well balanced, and the Gauc was fresh and very good as were the diced tomatoes. Then to reward myself further for this great little find I had the steak fajitas (and another negro modello) and I was truly in Socal heaven (minus the sun and warmth). I was amused by the narco corridos they were playing on the sound system and the whole place just seemed like something out of Tarantino movie after a few beers but with really good food and no danger :) This is place that will soon recognize my face as a regular! They are getting their full bar license in a month I was told so beer and wine available until it is Margarita time. Woo Hoo! read more

We have been going to the Maynard location for a few months now and the service has always been iffy. Today was the worst, we went for lunch. We were told to seat at any open table. We waited 15 minutes and we had to ask for a menu. However, in the 15 minutes 2 other parties showed up, they had menus, water, chips and their orders were being taken. What was the difference? We are Hispanic!!! The odd thing is that the Acton location is a lot friendlier!!! I wish Yelp had negative stars!!! read more

This review comes after our second visit here. The first time it was good, though honestly, the quality of beef was discouraging. The second visit was an improvement. If I could, I would make this 3.5 stars. We got the tacos al pastor, a chicken burrito for The Boy, and a cheese and bean taco and chicken taco. The pastor was very good. The chicken in both meals were good. The two tacos were a little bland in terms of seasoning, but fine. The spicy watermelon margarita was amazing. Friends there loved the mixed drinks, too. This is what pushes this nice little place towards 4 stars. We will return again and again. read more

My wife and I absolutely love this place. We both come from Central American families and we both feel like we're at home just by sitting in this place. The food IS authentic and very delicious. The tacos are amazing and I highly recommend getting the Alonso's Mole. Most places mole is sweet like BBQ sauce but this place has REAL mole sauce. Not too spicy buy not too sweet, just perfect. This is a nice quiet little spot between Summer and Main streets in Maynard with ample parking even with the nearby parking ramp currently out of service. Setting is bright and fun Food is excellent and I have always gotten good portions. Service is prompt - you can order at your table and don't have to go up to the counter as many people do assuming you order and sit, but this is not the case. They serve beer and wine so if you looking to drink tequila shots until you put your head through a wall this is not the spot for you. Try the flan or churros as well! read more

I have been to El Huipil more times than I have counted, and have had them cater two parties. The food is delicious. The portions sizes are perfect and the menu is huge. It's a family run place and service is fine - you order at the front and then they'll bring it to you - and everyone is nice. It's definitely good for kids; El Huipil has a fun, colorful atmosphere and plenty of menu options for the young ones. As for catering, the food is still just as good (we had burritos and chicken quesadillas for the last party, my younger sister's birthday party) and everything went smoothly. The best part about the catering and what makes El Huipil a little more unique are the Mexican sodas, the Jarritos. In every flavor you can imagine; the basics like strawberry and orange and lime, and more interesting flavors like grapefruit, mango, pineapple, and tamarind. It doesn't matter if you'd rather have a beer, when you go to El Huipil, try a Jarritos. I recommend pineapple or mango, but aside from the strawberry (which was way to sweet and syrupy for me), they're all good. read more

We stopped by on a weekend afternoon. A few tables had small groups. The hostess was seated at a table. She didn't stand up to seat us but asked us to seat ourselves. Our waitress took our drink orders fairly quickly. We got a round of house margaritas. Unfortunately, they don't do pitchers. The margaritas were a good value, fairly strong but good flavor. One of my friends asked for a second and a glass of water when our food arrived. The waitress brought the marg over quickly but the water never showed up. We all got chills rellenos. They were very good and came with a spicy, chipotle sauce. Beans had good flavor but were a little watery. Again, the food was pretty good, flavorful and spicy. The service was a little lacking. Servers members of staff were playing on their phones, video chatting/snap chatting, or watching tv. I understand, it was a quiet afternoon but c'mon. read more

I went here for a friend's birthday party. It was a Wednesday. The food took about 15 minutes. The food did not disappoint, all the food that came to our table was great except it wasn't our food. The service was the real problem here. A member of our group ordered 3 tacos and only 1 came. The waiter insisted he only ordered 1. But not only that, every order had at least 1 ingredient that wasn't ordered, in some cases 3. I would recommend this restaurant but you have to be extremely descriptive about your order. read more

It's about time that great Mexican fare come to our neighborhood. El Huipil is authentic, friendly, delicious, and the perfect take-out meal. My husband and I go at least once a week and are always satisfied. The Pollo al Mole is my personal favorite, but we also love the burritos, the enchiladas and the Tacos al Pastor (as someone who has lived in Mexico I can tell you that they're the real deal). A recent addition to the menu is the Posole, a hearty and flavorful soup. Fabulous. A place does not have to be fine dining to merit 5 stars. It only needs to serve delicious food and be authentic to itself. In this case, El Huipil is tasty, affordable, wholesome food, served up fast. Here's hoping that many more people set out to experience this hidden gem! read more

I stopped by yesterday and got the tacos for only $2.50. But I did add sour cream (50 cents) and guacamole ($1). The owner was very nice. I really enjoyed the tacos with chicken. I think I would have enjoyed them less without adding either guacamole or sour cream (preferably guacamole). I enjoyed everything. And I liked the atmosphere. I'm surprised that at least one person complained about the prices. If I remember correctly, everything was well under $10. I'm looking forward to going back. read more

First, this place is really basic. Don't bring anyone here to impress them with the decor or the view. You order from the counter and they bring it to the table. Basic is perfectly fine at times. The food, however, is really, really good. I get the shredded beef super burrito (includes rices, beans and some other stuff). GREAT! Everyone else really liked there food. Really good sauces. Bottom line: Basic place, great food and great prices. I'll bet I end up there as least once a month. :) read more

Update after having been back many more times: I'm hooked. The live music is totally charming and even when totally pack and with a line winding through the restaurant, everyone seems to be having a fine time and is willing to wait for great food. We love the margaritas, and the ceviche is really delicious! Nicest service ever. This place is located really close to Nason Street Laundromat and is a great place to pop in for a quick margarita and snack while your clothes are drying. The chips and guacamole are complimentary, which is nice. The guac has good flavor but very odd texture- not a deal breaker, but makes me wonder what's in it. The tacos are extremely mildly seasoned. My boyfriend likes to get hot sauce on the side. Tamales are good too. I don't think I've ever had Mexican food so mildly seasoned before, which may not be appealing to some people. But if what you're looking for is super nice people, tasty cold drinks, and convenience, this place fits the bill! We've been back a few times already. read more

Wow- this is particularly bad Mexican food. I'm biased coming from San Diego, but this is really awful. The tacos were dry (carnitas) and the al pastor had a weird flavor. We got the enchilada and Chile Reyano dish and it was cold with runny beans. I don't know how they managed to serve cold food- the cheese in the Chile reyano wasnt even melted. Awful. At least they couldn't mess up the bottled negro model. read more
