I have not been to El Jardin in about 10 years I used to go when I was in my 20s and I must say, this place is a huge disappointment... The chips and salsa are delicious and the margaritas used to be "grain" are mere mortal now and it was no surprise that the place was almost empty when we were there before Cubs game recently. Good Margaritas. Don't over do it or you'll feel & look like crap the next day. I like the Menudo but often they don't have it. I also like the lengua tacos. My friend insists that this is the only place to go for pork tacos ... I disagree. I think the La Pasadita Restaurants on Ashland are more authentic and MUCH cheaper. read more

I only had the cheap "on the rocks" rita's but could not drink more than 2 of them because they tasted too sour. But FYI that you WILL be drunk after two anyway so it doesn't matter. The food didn't really look very good so I didn't try any. One plus for smokers is that they have a covered patio where you can smoke. The staff is very friendly. Other than that, the place is pretty much a "hole in the wall," teetering on a "dump." I suggest you have 1 or 2 ritas prior to going out somewhere so you will be nice and buzzed for not a lot of $$$. read more

I'm not rating their food.....because I have yet to eat here. This is just dranks. One day before work, I met up with some friends and we sat out on the patio and had some margarita's. I chose to take the Squirt Route and order a Palermo. Basically it is like a Margarita, sans the nasty sour mix taste in the back of your throat, and with beautiful effervescence. I can drink those refreshing bubbly bastards for days!!!! But unfortunately I had to head to work after a few. They were really slow and kept coming up to our tables with random things saying, "Oh, they told me to bring the girl with the ponytail this." What? Visited El Jardin last nite on 5/24/10. If you want authentic Mexican cuisine.....this is your place. This is NOT a mexican wannabe restaurant. This is the real-deal people. I wish there had been some latin music playing but there wasn't. That's my only complaint. The margaritas were pretty awesome and our waiter Uriel knew the menu and made awesome suggestions. The nachos were great.....each individual chip was loaded with toppings. (Does it get any better than that?) We were a table of 4 and we all loved our experience here. I've got to give these guys a big pat on the back for getting together a very large order for a lunch pick up for my staff of 15. Some of the strongest, not sugary margaritas in Lakeview. The staff is always very nice and accomodating. They have an outdoor patio to relax on, and the food is top-notch and always fresh. Great place to stop before or after a Cubs game, or to pop into when strolling down Clark. The entrees are a bit pricey compared to other Mexican restaurants in the area, but the margaritas make it all worth it. Try a lava flow....! read more

The food here is pretty good. The service is hit or miss. I was with a group of five people on a Saturday night. You always expect it to be very busy on the weekends but there was a Cubs game that day too. Once our group was sat, we continued to sit and sit and sit and sit. finally a man came over and told us that our server had a large party and he was sorry for the delay. Fine. We sat at least 30 minutes before our order was taken and waited at least another 45 before it arrived. Luckily we were seated outside and had margaritas to keep us occupied. On top of all that they had the nerve to add gratuity to the check. By the end of the meal we were all so annoyed we didn't even care anymore and just paid the check and left. I have gone there before when it wasn't so busy and usually its ok, but this experience was terrible. read more

I don't know -- I have such mixed feelings about this place. I go back periodically -- so I can't really give them less than 4 stars. The food is pretty good, and keeps drawing me back. The place is spacious and can be crowded without being too loud, and is a good place to bring friends for drinks. The service is so-so. What really annoyed me is the 25 cent TO-GO charge. PER PERSON. It's such a small amount of money. Fifty cents for my husband and me. I really shouldn't care. It's just insulting. A to-go charge? They might as well charge for napkins. Or forks. It's cheaper for them if we take it to go than eat it there, and take up table space, a portion of rent, use dishes that need to be cleaned, dirty a table, etc. Did they think we just wouldn't see it? (Actually, this quite possible, because they never want to give you the receipt when you come in for a to-go order. Just tell you the price and hold out a hand expectantly for a credit card.) I wish they'd just raise the price of the food rather than a to-go charge. Otherwise, it's a decent restaurant. read more

Didn't have the opportunity to try the margs (I'd already had a few before stopping in for a late dinner). The only reason I can't give this place five stars is because I order the exact same thing every time I go here. The service is always excellent, and the margaritas are to die for (literally)! I have been coming here for almost a decade and have never been disappointed. The classic margarita will knock you over if you're not careful, so I recommend ordering some food - preferably the carne asada and some guacamole. In regards to their food, the carne asada is the best in town. Probably the best I have ever had. The service is extremely friendly and will cater to whatever you need.
