We had a bunch of people recommend EL Jefe Grill, which convinced us to visit, especially since we were staying nearby. [[HIGHLIGHT]]When we walked in for a Sunday dinner, we were greeted with the smell of roasting chicken and charcoal, a promising sign from the very start.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] It was pretty busy inside, but after ordering at the counter, the food only took about 15 minutes to arrive. Whole Chicken Meal ($27.74) - The meal comes with two 12 oz sides, an 8oz salsa, and either corn or flour tortillas. For the sides we went with the classic Mexican Rice and the Refried Beans. Both are pretty standard stuff from a Mexican restaurant. The rice is tender with still distinct grains, has an reddish color from tomatoes, and adds a scant amount of veggies mixed through. The beans are mostly smooth throughout, fatty and creamy. We went with the corn tortillas, of which they provide a whole stack of twelve, warmed until steaming, making them hot, soft, and pliable, perfect to eat with the chicken and sides. The chicken is legitimately amazing. Basically the entire restaurant smells like chicken fat being charred over mesquite. It's a mesmerizing smell that made me salivate upon walking in. The chicken is whole roasted with the dark meat and wings being cooked until succulent and juicy. The interior of the breasts are a bit dry, but there's not much that can be done with this cooking method! Otherwise, the char is excellent, creating an almost crust-like nature to the skin and the spice mix imbues a yellow glow to the entire tray. They give so much food that we only finished perhaps a quarter of it. We ended up bringing the rest home on our drive up the next day and ate it for another couple of meals. (5/5) I especially love their salsa bar off to the side of the main counter. There's so much variety, there's surely something to please anyone. They have a mild tomato, a mild but smoky, a spicy and fruity, a green tangy tomatillo, a creamy avocado, a crunchy fresh pico de gallo, a smoky and spicy, and a tangy and spicy salsa - basically all combinations someone could ask for. Even the spiciest additions are still very tolerable to my tastes. We were impressed enough to visit again the next day for lunch: Supreme Burrito al Pastor ($14.37) - This is hefty burrito, almost Mission-sized, being around 4 inch in diameter with the weight to match. It's first filled with plenty of Mexican rice, same as with the meal. For some reason, this time, the rice is hard and tough, like they had reached down to scrape the bottom of the rice cooker. It would likely be the most coveted portion of rice in a tagine or clay pot, but in a burrito, the toughness doesn't work well. On top of the rice are the refried beans, spooned over intermittently. It adds creaminess and fat to the otherwise dry exterior layers. Then the layer of meat begins - cubed pork, marinated in a savory and sweet sauce, then mixed up with chopped pineapples. It's more adobada than al pastor, and is on the sweeter end of things with the pineapple. The spice mixture isn't the most notable; they definitely focus on the chicken at El Jefe vs. the pork. Veggies, including lettuce and a pico de gallo mix cover the meat, followed by thinly shredded cheese and sour cream, which is thick and rich, perhaps more resembling crema than cream, and some guacamole, tangy and fatty. It's not the most even application - for example, the guac only covers one end of the burrito while the sour cream covers the other end. (4/5) I have to say, the chicken served at EL Jefe Grill is perfection. I would revisit just for that. Bathrooms - Two unisex rooms Note: El Jefe charges a 2.9% credit card fee. This is displayed at the register, but they have their POS set up incorrectly. Firstly, they lump the cost into the menu item instead of separating it out into a fee. Secondly, they actually charge a random fee rather than 2.9%. For example, the whole chicken meal is 3.1% and the supreme burrito is 2.7%. Very bizarre. I reported it to their management so hopefully it gets fixed soon. read more

We stopped to grab lunch while on that side of town after having multiple people recommend this location. I ordered a chicken bowl and my husband ordered the barrio tacos. The portion sizes are great and we definitely took home leftovers. The staff was so friendly and accommodating. You really felt welcome! Good god I love El Jefe... we've been coming to them since they opened since our kids go to the gymnastics studio just behind. I just wanted to update how much I LOVE them, since we've been here they have none stopped improved or added to their building. They started small but now have an "outdoor" patio area with 3 TV's and I just walked out today seeing AC units I assume they are installing for the closed outdoor patio area. What a wonderful dinner experience my wife, daughter and myself had tonight at El Jefé. My wife has a certain knack of discovering all the great places to eat and this place was no exception. We ordered the family meal which consisted of a whole grilled chicken, including a side of beans, Spanish rice and tortillas of your choice. We went with flour. As for our salsa, we went with Pico de Gallo. I would have to say that the chicken was absolutely delicious. The meat was well prepared; moist and tender and seasoned to perfection, not too salty or bland. The cooks in the kitchen were really upbeat and know how to prepare the food well which led to our wonderful dinner experience. We also wanted to try their horchata and Alma was so kind enough to give us the drink including an additional melon drink on the house. Absolutely yummy and fresh drinks. Must haves! Tonight was very busy (Friday) and the wait for our food was 30 min but well worth it. We didn't mind waiting because we wanted to eat there which made our experience that much better. My husband got a chicken burrito; but with no rice or pico de gallo (he has the cilantro glitch) he said it was a bit dry. But I think that's his situation, not a general rule. I've always had consistently good food here at a great price, and today was no exception. The customer service was especially wonderful this time around -- they even gave me a free large cup of champurrado, which was absolutely perfect on such a cold day. So far we've loved the food every time going. We used to drive to Gresham for good Mexican food but the quality is no longer worth the drive, so we've been looking in the area and I think we found it. The little salsa, carrot, pico bar is very tasty and free with dine in - along with free coffee! The prices for modern 2025 aren't bad, and the portions, quality is great! AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I was looking for a place to kick it and have a bite while my son was taking driving lessons. This place was right across the street from the Tigard Park and Ride. I was excited about the fresh salsa bar, although one isn't allowed to take any if you get to go food. That was a bit of a red flag. I was there right after they opened, 10:15 on a Saturday morning, expecting fresh food. I asked what was good, and was told "Everything!" I ordered chicken enchiladas, with red sauce, accompanied by rice and beans. I was the only customer in the restaurant and it took around 20 minutes to receive my order. The rice and the beans, served in side containers, were actually really delicious, escpecially with some extra fresh salsa. SORRY, TO GO ORDERS! The four enchiladas were covered with...SALAD??? Like, seriously, there was a salad on top of the enchiladas! I scraped that off, and the salad was actually pretty good, fresh romaine, yummy mexican cheese, and some kind of white dressing that I certainly DID NOT want on my enchiladas. Then, oh, no. I took a bite of a chicken enchilada. Then I chewed, and chewed, and chewed, and chewed...and spit it out. I tried another bite from another enchilada, just to be sure this wasn't a fluke. NOPE. Chewed and chewed and chewed and chewed...spit it out. I was never asked how I was enjoying my meal. I left my leftover plate with almost four full enchiladas at the garbage area, in case someone wanted it. [[HIGHLIGHT]]THEN: I picked up my son from his driving lesson and he said he needed to pee. I drove back to this restaurant and told him where the restroom is, knowing no one would notice a non customer coming in to use their restroom They didn't.[[ENDHIGHLIGHT]] When he came out, I asked if there was still a plate of food at the garbage and he said there was. My food had been sitting there for around 30 minutes. AGAIN: AVOID AT ALL COSTS. I was going to take a photo, because it actually LOOKED kind of yummy, but I didn't once I began eating it. El Jefe has been a food cart over in Beaverton and still is, but I guess it was time to open up a brick and mortar spot. It's right next door to Mike's Drive-in in Tigard. As of writing this review, this location hasn't even been open a full two days. So they are still working things out. The food was as expected, great. That chicken is so well seasoned. I used to live in Texas and there were a couple of places that had this type of grilled chicken and I missed it. I got beans and slaw for sides and it's served with the option of tortilla chips or hot tortillas in eith flour or corn. I'm sorry but hot flour tortillas can't be beat. They also give you grilled and pickled onions, sliced radishes and pico on some lettuce. You won't leave hungry. Since it's brand new, the place is pretty spotless and the service was attentive. IDK were they low on food or trying to close early? It's cramped inside. I didn't see a bathroom so must be porta pot or something outside. They do have large outdoor seating area that looks like it would be fun on a warm night. Tonight was not that night. I don't know how they handle crowds because the right people that came in over 15 minutes seemed to overwhelm the staff. I guess it was because they were an hour from closing time and the kitchen was trying to close some of our food was clearly microwaved and had hot and cold space. It really seems like it was just thrown on the plate or sorry the small tray. The tray kind of gets in your way and is not big enough to serve as a plate. So you are looking for where to put it as you try to assemble your food. Music was so loud it made it hard to communicate with the staff and ask questions about the menu. My daughter liked her chicken quesadilla it was just nothing that made it special or something different than what you can do at home. Will have to go back two hours before closing to see if that makes a difference. read more

El Jefe opened its doors, we have been dying to try them, they also have a food cart on Lombard and Allen. The employees are very friendly and they are bilingual. We really enjoyed our food. The tacos were full of meat, onions and cilantro, the green salsa and red salsa were very tasty! For those of you that enjoy jalapeños they give you plenty! The rice and beans are very authentic. I asked them to add some cheese to my tacos, that topped them off perfectly! The interior is well decorated and they have about 6-8 tables it's a small place. They do have a nice outdoor covered seating area. You can also pick up your favorite salsa in the grab and go fridge as well as sliced fruits!!
