There's the compulsory photo of the Pope and the Madonna hanging in the corner. All of this and great food combine to make this my go to place for authentic Mexican cooking. The chips and salsa were solid, and the salsa had a nice kick without being overpowering. Service was friendly and quick, and the staff made sure everything came out right. The place itself is casual and clean, nothing fancy but comfortable. Only reason I'm giving 4 stars instead of 5 is because the wait was a little longer than expected during a busy time, but the food made up for it. I'll definitely be back to try more of the menu.

After waiting quite a while with no one checking on us, we eventually had to go to the host stand ourselves just to close out the bill. Our tab was around $200. Rather than dine and dash, we paid in full for the food and drinks, but chose not to leave gratuity based on the experience. The food itself was nicely presented and overall tasted good, but high prices comparable to Chicago do not automatically make a restaurant upscale. It was heavy on the vinegar and I loved the tanginess of the vinegar that gave it a bite at the end. Second, the queso was what you would expect from a Mexican restaurant. Third, I got the Gordo burrito. It's called Gordo for a reason but the meat you need to stuff it with for an upcharge is the carnitas. The carnitas are done extremely well as they are a solid pulled pork with a Mexican flair. I did think the sauces that topped the burrito were a little weak. My wife got enchiladas. They were pretty small but rather tasty. Overall, Tres Amigos was pleasing and I would return for the salsa and carnitas.
