    Table side guacamole
    Stewart V.

We visited the new Mexican restaurant in Powhatan, El Jinete for dinner. We were very pleased with our experience. The restaurant was a bit dated, but so are most in Powhatan. The restaurant is located on the left hand side of the Food Lion strip mall. There was plenty of free parking in front. Upon entering our host sat us with a smile.. (important to me). Our waiter, Alan introduced himself and was very friendly. Our group of five ordered the table side guacamole $8, chick n wings $5, Mexican soup $5, chix soft taco $3, chix hard taco $3, side of white rice, side of yellow rice and the Pollo Costeno $12. The table side guacamole was excellent, we added a little salt and pepper and we loved it. It gave us sometime to speak with Alan and learn some history about the restaurant and the owner. The food came out quickly, about 10-15 minutes after ordering which was very much appreciated! My dad raved about the soup. My son Cole who is the pickiest 8 year old on Earth loved yellow rice but not the white one. My older boy loved the two chicken tacos but not a fan of their chicken wings.. (only my mom orders chicken wing at a Mexican place) My mom and I split the Pollo Costeno and thought it was delicious. The Pollo Costeno was flat piece of chicken with 5 shrimp topped with a creamy sauce. It included soft tortillas, yellow rice and refried beans. . It was enough food to split between us especially after chowing down on chips, salsa and guacamole. To improve, consider offering the yellow rice as a side before the white one, 86 the chicken wings or spice em up Mexican style in some fashion (dried peppers in the batter add color and flavor) and possibly add some colorful decorations to the interior of the restaurant. Stopped by tonight during happy hour. No one was at hostess station so we made our way to the bar. Good service, fast turn around on decent food. We had charro salad with chicken n enchiladas verde both were good. Someone dropped off chips n salsa but no refills. My waistline thanks you but my munchie side wanted more. Will We return ? Absolutely.

The food is always fresh and tansy and the staff friendly. Prices are great and the portions substantive. Couldn't ask for better.

We got their churros, they're filled with apple and come with caramel dipping sauce and the most vanilla ice cream I've ever had. I wanted to take a pic but we ate it already. Their coke is delicious too and the service is IMPRESSIVE. Love this place and will be back over and over. This place should be packed all day every day. It's really cute inside too! Great for a date.

The entire staff was friendly, professional, and customer forward. The ambiance was great - lighthearted but professional. The dining area was very clean and the room was warm and well lit with natural light which made the space feel even cleaner and more inviting. The staff all had matching shirts (it was cinco de mayo so it's possible it was celebratory rather than the norm but it carried well either way) Now to the food. The food was enjoyable. It didn't wow me, but I definitely enjoyed my meal. The chips and salsa were on point. The flavor of the rice and beans were better than many others. The beef taco and enchilada were flavorful enough but had it not been for the salsa from the chips that I ended up adding, it would have been mediocre at best. But here's the thing... the value was not there. The food is overpriced. What you see in the photo was a $20 meal before tip - and his was the cheapest offering on their lunch menu. (The plate was $13 and the side of beans, $5) I had a water otherwise, I would've been closer to $25 for sure. So overall, a good experience. Good food, very good service, very clean and welcoming but the value was the biggest dent in the experience. I'm willing to go back and try other items onto the menu but I'm prepared now. Bring a little extra dinero.

Once they moved, it seems as if some of the charm had left---along with the guarantee that the food would be perfect. I have had some absolutely amazing food here. But, lately, it's been passable. I tried the burrito today. Not a burrito guy but wanted something different. It was standard burrito fair. Some beans. Some rice. Some meat. Some sauce. It was good. But it was a burrito. Not hard to do an okay burrito. The tostada is where I was hoping for the usual greatness of this restaurant. I took a bite. The tostada seemed slightly overcooked. That's okay. I can deal with it. It slightly altered the taste, but okay. The rest of it was pretty tasty. Until....bad carnitas. I mean...bad carnitas. One bite was 100% fat. I know they saw it when they put it on. Some like that, I don't. And then...some bites that were not chewable - or digestible. Then another bad bite. Tostados are not too big. So there are only so many bites. This one made me never want to try carnitas there again. It's too bad. The people there are always nice. The food used to be great. Now. Not so much.
