I'm not often in Powhatan, so I was thrilled to try 1933 Public House for the first time last Thursday night after work with a couple of coworker friends. We booked a reservation and that seemed like a good idea, as it was quite full inside. We were seated in a corner booth in their dining room, directly across from the expansive wrap-around bar area. I noticed a cute little fireplace in the dining room too. All around, the vibe was perfect for a chill dinner. I ordered the Abita root beer ($5) to drink, which is always a good choice. One of my friends ordered a Sangria, which looked lovely, and she said it was good. I'd consider ordering that in the future. For food, I started with a small ceasar salad ($5). I loved the dressing on it so much, I wish I could've bottled it up! I would return JUST for that dressing. One of my friends ordered it for her meal and added salmon, and she also liked it. Another friend ordered the spinach salad and *loved* it. I ordered the blackened mahi with pimento grits and brussel sprouts for my entree ($30), the brussels subbed for the broccoli that originally came with the dish. Everything on the dish was delightful, and my leftovers warmed up well the next day too. We each ordered a different chocolate dessert, including the chocolate peanut butter pie, the chocolate pot de creme, and (myself) the brownie sundae. We all enjoyed them quite a bit. Prices were super reasonable, especially considering how much food we ordered. Everything was clearly high quality also. Can't wait to try more of their menu in the future! read more

Updated Review (9-28-2024): Girls' night out was a hit! Public House remains in my top 3 spots for food and drinks. We went for happy hour on Saturday (starts at 8pm), after leaving 3 Crosses, which closes at 8pm. The outdoor covered patio was perfect--great fresh air and not too crowded. Karen, our waitress again, was incredibly attentive and made sure we were all enjoying ourselves. We traveled from Midlothian, and one of our friends, visiting for the first time, was very impressed and said she'd definitely come back. Well done, Public House! read more

OK, this place is an absolute gold mine. I'm not going to bother posting pictures, there are plenty. We went to stop at our favorite ice cream shop, which had a 45 minute wait, so we decided to give 1933 a try. From their ability to take our walk-in at prime dinner hour to the service and knowledge of the menu, our waitress, having tried many of the dishes, this place was fantastic. My husband and I, along with some friends, went to 1933 last Friday night. The food was absolutely delicious, but what really stood out was the amazing service. The restaurant was busy and the service was running just a little slow. The manager noticed, came over to apologize, and offered us a free round of drinks or dessert on the house. Honestly, we didn't even think the service was that slow--it was barely noticeable--but his attentiveness made such a difference. Our waiter was wonderful as well: cheerful, attentive, and checking in just enough to be sure we were happy with our meals. It was a great night, made even better by the thoughtful attention we received. We'll definitely be back--soon and often! read more

We had a nice date night out at 1933 public house, in powhatan village. After 8 pm is happy hour on a Saturday! Which was perfect because we were just going for drinks/snacks/dessert. I got a glass of Chardonnay ($3 off for HH) and my husband got a pint of draft beer (half off for HH). We shared some fries. We took our time through that, chatting and having the whole front section of the restaurant to ourselves, since most folks were crowded in the bar area. We got the dessert menu while ordering a second round: me, some bubbly, husband, more beer. Then we got the brownie sundae and the creme brulee. Both desserts were delicious and we were full after but dont regret sharing two instead of just one. I knocked one star off because the fries were honestly just mediocre, and if it hadn't been happy hour drinks woulda been fairly expensive. But the service was friendly and attentive(not too attentive) and it was a fun night. i'd do it again! read more

My erstwhile dining companion had the glazed salmon off the regular menu, I had a lamb chop special. Both were excellent. We were traveling through, but would definitely stop again if in the area. Came here with coworkers and we sat outside to enjoy the nice weather. I had a white wine spritzer which was crisp and refreshing. Just what I wanted. We were there on a Tuesday which is community night so a portion of proceeds are donated to a local nonprofit and it's a limited menu. We got the polenta fries and tater tots to start. I'm still thinking about this polenta fries. So good. For my entree I got a spring salad with shrimp. Very good. My husband ordered the pepperoni pizza and had plenty leftover to bring home for lunch the next day. The service was so friendly and they let us stay and hang even after they had closed. We didn't mean to stay long but didn't realize what time it was. The staff was so polite and we never felt rushed. I look forward to going back and trying more items on the menu. Arrived at 1933 Public House tonight and received the poorest service and incredibly poor food I've experienced in a very long time, and that's being polite. From the front door to our exit we could have had a burger and soggy fries from McDonalds and enjoyed better service and food that you had to stand in line for. When you charge premium prices for your food and lavations you should get more than toasted bread and excuses for it taking over an hour and a half. I guess because I've taken my wife there on special occasions a number of times that they would finally have it right but I was in error FOR THE LAST TIME! First off I want to say the food is Very Good. This was our second time having dinner there we were a party of 5. When the waitress came past my dinner was finished ( as I said food was Very Good ). What bothered me was she asked was I done or did I want to lick the plate. I personally found that very rude and very offensive. Before we left I spoke to a young man who said he was the manager but he said hummm and would talk to the waitress whom had left but turned us over to the bartender. My wife made reservations for dinner on Father's Day. Service and food were outstanding. Our waitress, Karen H., was amazing. She listened intently, and was 100% accurate with everything we asked about and ordered. She timed the courses perfectly, was very helpful, was fun, and enhanced our dining experience by her upbeat personality. Catfish and chips, House grilled burger, spinach salad, drafts and sangria were all fresh, delicious, and were prepared and served perfectly. We will be back! read more

Outstanding drinks- old fashioned (amazing) and the best drink I have ever had (French75). We started with the fried oyster special- crispy succulent oysters with 2 sauces served in a bed of lettuce. PERFECTION. Special fish was wahoo on couscous with Brussels and creamed corn - so good. And I had a wild mushroom flatbread. Very good. I typically have a policy that if I don't like something, to move along and not post a negative review. But, we are 4/4 (maybe 5/5?) bad experiences here and seeing all the positive reviews, I feel like I am doing a disservice to prospective diners for them to make a decision based on the current reviews. The food is adequate, at best. Which is fine - if their price point reflected the quality. We have sat at the bar most times, and the bartenders are always friendly and attentive. The setting is adorable. We really, really want to like it. We would love to have a good food option in Powhatan. 1933 is not it. For the same money, drive 30 minutes into Midlo and go to Midlothian Chef Kitchen for a truly fantastic meal. read more

We have given this place more than its share to get it right. Once again they fail. Now I have not sat in the dining area in a longtime so this is just my experience sitting at the bar. Come in for a glass of wine , 20 min go by and no one has come over to us to offer a beverage . Finally the person we are sitting with calls over the bartender and places our order. Again no one offering a food menu or anything. Finally after 30 min I ask for a dessert menu another 20 min go by and no one has followed up with "see anything you like?" So I ask for the check which doesn't come for another 15 min. And then she asks me, "no dessert" I wanted to say well if you would have asked me then yes but since you never followed back up , I'm ready to leave . I understand when a bar is busy but the bar was not busy and we were served one glass of wine in a 90 min visit. I am not sure why this is but the 2 girls need to realize that everyone should be treated with the same respect as everyone else siting around the bar. The service was good. Our server was clearly experienced and well trained. My husband had the fish and chips. He claimed it was the best he has had in greater RVA. The batter was seasoned perfectly. It came with about 2 oz of sliced cabbage that was identified as cole slaw. It wasn't. It came with tarter sauce that was really not good at all. I had the burger. It was supposed to be medium rare. It was medium well. The patty was not so big. It came with fries that were lackluster. I would not trust this place with a $38 steak. We will not likely be back. The bill was over $50. I am really disappointed by the brunch experience I had at this restaurant. I have been here previously and thoroughly enjoyed the experiences. This time however, the service was so-so; forgotten silverware, no napkins, and food arriving cold. The biscuits included with meal were hard as rocks, the shrimp and grits were swimming in grease and looked slopped together and my husbands breakfast sausage was cold. I wonder if there has been changes in the kitchen? Been here several times and always enjoyed it. Tonight was not good. If you charge $38 for a steak then you should cook it right. The Caesar salad had barely any dressing which made it tasteless, had to ask for extra dressing. On the positive side the waitress was great, very apologetic and practically insisted we send the steak back and because we didn't she provided free desert. What drove me to write here was the bill. The tip suggestion was wrong and it left a bad taste. I always do 20% and for our $59 bill ( yep for a sirloin and a chicken ceasar, no drinks ) the 20% suggestion was $14, not $12. Totally spoilt the great effort of the waitress to make amends for poor food with the deserts. read more

LUNCH... Nice atmosphere, friendly people. Food is just OK. Ordered shrimp pO boy. Asked for extra crispy fries - they redid the fries. Sandwich 1/2 full of shrimp, sauce covered less than half of the bun. The salad consisted of 4 small pieces of greens. Server said it was a small side salad, but 4 pieces of green stuff? Looking at the menu, prices seemed reasonable, but considering what we got,... Won't be returning! read more

My shrimp and grits was disappointing. The sausage was flavorful, but that was the only flavor in the dish. I actually wondered if maybe they forgot to add the salt during cooking, and also there were no salt/pepper shakers on the tables. I will say, the texture of the grits was on point. It was just a shame that the flavor was missing. My husband had the burger. He said it wasn't great, but wasn't bad, either. We ordered the smoked shrimp dip with toasted baguette pieces as an appetizer. It was creamy, and tasted nice, but not smoky. Very few toasted baguette pieces came with it. We asked for more. We were charged another dollar for that, which didn't bother us, but the kitchen didn't bother to toast them. They were just thin pieces of slightly stale baguette, which fell apart when we tried to scoop the dip with them. The pinot grigio I had was tasty, and my husband really enjoyed the Crazy Rooster beer he ordered. The atmosphere was bright, clean, and pleasantly modern. If they seat you in the bar area, ask for a booth, because the high chairs at the hightop tables get uncomfortable after 10-15 minutes. Our server, Evva, did a good job. read more

The Valentine's Day menu was delicious; lobster bisque was excellent! For our entrees, I had the steak and my husband had the tile fish; these two dishes were well done, seasoned, and presented. The drinks were great; well prepared and with enough alcohol to say the least - cheers! The service by the waitressing staff was good; I understood that the restaurant was busy. But above all the waitress did not fail to deliver a good service; well done ladies . I'm certain that I will visit again; therefore, I can recommend this restaurant.
