Wow! What a creative menu of delicious food. Walking in, I have never seen such diligence of sanitation and COVID protocol. We washed our hands and were led into the wonderful open dining area. My husband and I frequently eat here. We had some friends coming to town and wanted to take them somewhere other than the traditional taco stands. The food is always delicious. I haven't had anything I didn't like. The service is good. They take a little too long to ask for drinks, but other than that every server will help you if you ask. Its a cute place with cute decor, and they have a lot of seating. We came for an early dinner and it wasn't super busy, but I am sure they can be busy for dinner. Asked my wife's Tia for a dinner recommendation and she told us El Lugan de Nos was great and it is right around the corner from where she lives. We picked her up and was totally surprised at how close the restaurant really was to her house. We were seated after a short wait and we were not disappointed at all. The bread that was delivered to our table was toasted and served with some type of melted creamy butter. We ordered a pizza for an appetizer half shrimp and half lamb, beef & pork. The pizza was loaded with flavor and would gave been great as an entree. My wife ordered the tortilla soup as her entree, her Tia ordered the grilled octopus fish and I got the grilled beef dish. All three were wonderful with lot of flavor and a beautiful presentation. We did save room for the apple cobbler dish that was served in a skillet topped with teo different types if ice cream. We did a three way split of the dish, but finished maybe a third of it. Luckily Tia was able to pack up the left over dinner and dessert to take home and share it with her husband. My wife and I will certainly return to this restaurant on our next visit to Tecate. read more

The first time we attempted to eat here, there was an hour and a half wait. Then we tried to make a reservation for the following day, but they're closed on Monday and Tuesday. I suggest making a reservation ahead of time. This time we made our reservation but parking was still an issue. We had to park down the street, but it wasn't a big issue. All of the staff seemed friendly but the service was almost non existent. After our order was taken, they never checked on us, offered more drinks etc. We ordered the small parrillada. The small is enough for 2-4 people depending on how hungry you are. The arrachera was great. The other meats were good but the stand out was definitely the arrachera. It was very well seasoned and tender. They forgot to include salsa which was a bummer (the menu says it's comes with it) and they never returned so we couldn't ask for any. Also, this parrillada doesn't come with tortillas, only little quesadillas. They were good but honestly I would've been much happier with fresh tortillas. A small assortment of salsas and maybe onions or cabbage would've made the meal more enjoyable. I've never been to a restaurant in Baja California that doesn't give you these things with a parrillada. To drink I ordered a jamaica margarita, which I didn't really like. It was kind of girly looking and I wasn't crazy about the flavor. There wasn't much tequila in it and there was so much jamaica flowers that I had to chew each drink. I wanted to order something else but wasn't able to. My wife ordered a dessert, the plátanos flameados. I think she liked it, it looked pretty good. Overall I was pretty happy with the food. I'm not sure if I liked it enough to go back for more, but overall not bad. I deducted a star for the lack of service. The parking situation and needing a reservation is kind of a pain too. read more

Went there yesterday after reading reviews here everything about the experience was nothing short of excellent! Turns out we hit the timing perfectly arriving @2pm on a Saturday so though busy we were sat immediately then the rush started shortly thereafter. My Spanish sucks so they brought over a young lady, Violetta, who spoke English very well, knew the food, and was such a pleasure to have help us. As per her suggestion we went with an order of their scallops and a special that was a huge marinated flank steak/ribeye in sort of a mexican teriyaki/red wine sauce on a big bone covered with potatoes, squash, green beans, and a few other things shared. We also ordered a few Margarita de Nos. The food was perhaps the best flavor I've ever had, absolutely unbelievable! The margaritas were amazing, not acidic like most here in San Diego they were VERY smooth. Food A+ Service - Violetta couldn't have been better or more sweet, knowledgeable, helpful. Atmosphere - the place is a LOT larger than it looks from outside. Very quaint, cool inside with a very large patio even couches on the back patio. Prices - 3 margies each, 2 big entres, one dessert ran us $80 American. We're going back in a couple weeks cant wait to enjoy this gem again read more

Great service and amazing food. We stopped in for a Sunday brunch. They have several seating areas throughout the restaurant and there is parking if you choose to drive, we walked across the border. To start, both the Crema de Tomate and Sopa de Tortilla were delicious soups with beautiful presentation (they pour the broth for the Sopa de Tortilla at the table). This very rustically charmed restaurant feels like eating in an old Mexican hacienda or cantina. The food was wonderful although some of the flavors were a little too exotic for my taste. The staff are friendly and attentive. Never an empty glass. And for English only speakers fear not. They are also very fluent in English and capable of helping to explain the menu if you have any questions. I was worried going into a fancy place with kids but they made the kids feel fancy too when they gave them water in cute small wine glasses. The bread appetizer is a yummy rolls with butter and olive oil and vinegar. We got the margarita pizza and it was very tasty and good. It had several types of tomatoes on it. The salad de nos was strawberries with spinach and walnuts pretty good. Kids had Alfredo pasta and loved it. The security guard shows my kids some cats. The place is eclectic and interesting decor. Overall I think we'd return. Not many wines to choose from that are by the glass, maybe 4? But lots of bottles you can pick, and every glass is 95 pesos. $6? Overall great food. Everything was great until they brought the bill. When I ordered our meal from the menu, it said the medium parrillada was $850 (pesos). On the bill, they charged me $1150 for the medium parrillada. I complained to the waiter that they were charging me a different price than what the menu said. He then brought me another menu (one that I have never seen before) and said that the prices on the menu from which I ordered were incorrect. So they had given me a menu with old prices, and they didn't explain that until after we had eaten! The way I see it, when you are given a menu with the prices shown, that is the price that you agree to pay. Coming back after the meal with another menu with different prices is cheating the customer. I therefore left no tip. Furthermore, due to this disagreement, I will most likely not go back there again. read more

El Lugar de Nos is located on Benito Juarez Blvd (Hwy 2), 1 mile west of the Tecate border crossing. There is parking out front, and a protected inner parking lot with security. The restaurant consists of 3 huge dining rooms that make you feel you're in a hacienda home, very casual with an occasional eclectic wall hanging. The center kitchen is open air and viewable by all. Although I had reservations for 8:00PM, there were open tables when we arrived. 1 hour later and the place was full. We were greeted cheerfully and seated by an English speaking host. Mostly a local crowd of couples and families with just a few gringos. For starters, we tried their Margarita de Nos that was excellent. They have a full bar, with many local wines and bottled and draft artisan beers. We started with their Tortilla Soup, and the "84 Tacos." There are several menu items with "84" in the description - from what I've read, this uses a slow-cooked marinated beef that is cooked for 84 hours. A huge bowl of dry soup ingredients (tortilla strips, croutons, spices, peppers, beef, noodles) was brought, then our waitress poured a hot kettle of soup broth to make the soup come alive. Warning: it's spicy, but the best tortilla soup I've had ever! The plate of four 84 mini-tacos was quite good - the beef is moist, tender and very flavorful. Two thumbs up so far, and more margaritas. It was really hard to decide on a main entrée. The menu is varied, with Mexican entrees, steak, pasta, seafood (salmon, tuna), chicken, pizza (with tasty toppings), and the unusual "parrillada:" a mass of ribeye, 84 beef, chicken, shrimp, sausage, and tossed with spices and smothered with grilled vegetables, for 2-4 people to enjoy together. I was going to order the spicy shrimp plate, but decided on a tenderloin steak. My friend got the 84 Pasta. My tender steak arrived smothered in a unique au jus sauce, with melted cheese and grilled veggies on top, and mini quesadillas. My friend's pasta with 84 beef came on a huge plate with grilled asparagus on top. Both entrees were excellent, and left us so full we couldn't try their ice cream or dessert menu. Every menu item is uniquely prepared, and is flavorful. Service is impeccable. Total bill was very reasonable and less than what I expected. My wife and I stay at Rancho La Puerta once a year and annually "go over the wall" to visit a local restaurant in Tecate. Last night we had dinner al El Lugar and it was spectacular. Great salads and a wide choice of entrees. Besides a really unique and delicious Caesar Salad, I took a chance and ordered a plate of goat tacos. My, was it ever delicious with a purée of cilantro pesto on the plate. What a unique place. The service was excellent and the kitchen is exciting to watch. We were a party of 8, we all got different plates. We had the pizza with the house meat, a sandwich with the house meat delish! The Greek salad was good and the tacos with house meat where good!! Lacking flavor was the tortilla soup and the fettuccine pasta, it tasted more like milk then Alfredo sauce, the chicken on the pasta was good though. The sauce was no bueno. Good service! We went here for dinner based on the recommendation of the staff at Rancho La Puerta. I believe that our waiter was the owner. Service was very good and everyone in our group liked their food and drinks. They also have a small collection of craft beer that is brewed in Tecate and Tijuana.
