The prices are a little higher than most Mexican places I have visited. However, the portions are generous and the quality of the food is excellent. I also had the top shelf Margarita and it was great too. It cost 12.99, but they were running a 10% off special for it. The service was also good. The decor is odd for a Mexican place with rustic chairs and tables that would be at home in a country themed restaurant. There was a light fixture that gave Vegas vibes . Overall we had a great experience, but found it pricey compared to similar restaurants. read more

Service was amazing, from the greeting as I entered to the final bill. Ordered the house Margarita on the rocks, a bit sweet, but tasty. Next received chips and salsa. Ordered queso dip small, very liquid, would have liked it a bit more thick and smooth. Finally, had the Steak Street tacos on flour tortillas, absolutely tasty. Side of black beans also got the spot. Iced tea arrives in a carafe with a straw. I asked for a glass as I like to eat the ice. I was refused and handed the straw. Seafood enchiladas arrive with shells still on the shrimp. Mgr asks if everything is okay. I say no. He has to argue with the waiter to get me a glass. He takes away the plate. Unfortunately I didn't grab my fork and this was important. Runner brings me a new plate but I have no fork. No follow up so I can ask for a new fork. After five minutes I stand up, find a waiter, and ask for the manager. I offer a different mgr $5 for the tea I've had. Waiter has to translate. They accept. I'll never be back. Building is pretty. read more

I don't usually leave negative reviews, but my recent experience deserves a warning label. I went in hoping for a solid Mexican meal and a good old fashioned to unwind--unfortunately, I got neither. First, the food. Easily the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The flavors were flat, the seasoning was nonexistent, and the dish tasted like it had been sitting out long before it reached my table. Nothing was fresh, nothing was memorable--unless you count how memorable the disappointment was. Then there was the old fashioned. Calling it "bad" feels generous. It was watered down, unbalanced, and somehow both weak and unpleasant at the same time. It didn't resemble an old fashioned so much as it did a random mix of ingredients hoping to be one. Overall, the entire experience was a letdown from start to finish. I walked in hungry and left wishing I had gone literally anywhere else. read more

Tonight we celebrated my mother in laws birthday and had never visited El Maguey before. We were pleasantly surprised. This restaurant sits in a small shopping strip that I've passed by many times but never really paid much attention to what was in it. Upon our arrival, we walked into a very welcoming and inviting atmosphere and were immediately seated. The restaurant was very nice and tidy, the waiters were very helpful and informative of the menu. I had the Burrito Al Carbon which included shrimp, chicken, sautéed onions, queso and salsa. I hope I'm not leaving anything out. It was delicious. We also had a large bowl of queso to share with the family. Their drinks are served in mini pitchers which my husband was happy about. We were in Brooks KY on a business trip and randomly chose this restaurant for dinner one night because it was close and we were hungry. What a pleasant surprise! It's located in a strip mall and I wasn't expecting much, but once we walked in, wow! It's a beautiful space inside. The food was delicious and plenty of it. Service was great too. Let me start of by saying I go here mostly for their bourbon selection. Yes, you read that correctly, their BOURBON selection. Not Tequila, not Margaritas, but bourbon. This place has one of the best bourbon bars you will find outside of downtown Louisville. I'm talking every high-end brand you can think of, and some you have never heard of. Bar is absolutely gorgeous, and the bartender knows his stuff. I try a different bourbon every time we go and am never disappointed. If they didn't serve food here, I would go just for the bar. But just because they specialize in bourbon doesn't mean they don't have great Mexican food. The food is wonderful, and the menu is amazing. Never had anything bad here, the Mahi tacos, the Chorizo tacos, the Wet Burrito all were stellar. Decor is great, this is not your average Mexican restaurant, everything about this place feels different than those dime a dozen Mexican spots that litter Dixie or Preston highway. read more

This is our preferred spot for Mexican food. The food is great and the restaurant is always clean. We went on a Saturday and they had live music that wasn't overwhelming (acoustic guitar), I also couldn't believe how great the staff was at singing happy birthday - a band came out with a violin and guitar to sing to a few birthday tables. My kids love the games they have (tic tac toe, connect 4, cornhole) though we never have to wait for a table. My husband got the steak fajitas and it was mostly meat - not peppers and onions like some restaurants. We always enjoy ourselves when we eat here. read more

We stopped here on our way down to Nashville since it was Cinco De Mayo and I am so glad we did. We only had to wait about 15 minutes. We got sat pretty quickly and the place was decorated and there was live music. It was really welcoming. We got our drinks right away and they came in these large canisters that were perfect! We never needed refills!!! I got a burrito and others at my table got a form of tacos and we all loved our food. We got the regular queso and beef queso and both were delicious. El maguey is a Mexican good establishment located in the small city of Brooks Kentucky just a mile or so off the expressway exit. After getting a referral from a family friend about a New Mexican place with a cool and fun vibe me my wife and out 4th born daughter (20 months) made a trip here for lunch. The vibe and decor here are very fun and cool. From the outside where they got a cool statue and fun table with table games to the inside that is very eloquent with awesome lights and decor. The waiting area had fun little dice games and table games too. When we arrive there was no wait so we did not participate. The service here was super fast, accurate and friendly. You get some complimentary chips and salsa which is always a positive for me when it comes to Mexican eateries (the ones that don't offer that lose a star automatically for me). The chips had a solid flavor but to me the salsa personally had too strong of an onion hint. However that may have been a me problem because my wife and 20 month old smashed them and seemed to love it. For my meal I personally got a Maguey Arroz. Which is grilled chicken, shrimp, steak mixed with rice and queso. Very good and nice flavor. The queso was great and unlike other places with Similar dishes they don't skimp on the queso. So very good dish. My wife got the Burrito dos bandidos and was a huge fan. She said she would give it a big two thumbs up. Said had good flavor and the green sauce had. A surprising yet tasty sour flavor to it. Overall this is a very nice and moderately priced establishment. I loved the vibe and decor and it was a huge highlight for us. However the food was also top notch. I would recommend this place and hope it does well being located in an isolated small city are. Hopefully it can get the traffic it needs to succeed. read more

Unexpected luxury during a quick stop. While traveling, we popped into what we figured what would be a hole-in-the-wall place. The decor and atmosphere instantly set it apart. We were impressed by the modern ambiance and large menu. Plus everything was top notch! We got the crab and shrimp quesadilla and the enchiladas. I was shocked by the interior ambience when we walked into this establishment in Brooks, KY. I would say they have the best decor/vibe/ambience in Brookes, Hillview, Shepherdsville, etc. So I was pleasantly surprised but then my expectations grew higher as well! We visited on a Thursday at 7:30 PM and we're seated immediately in a booth for 2. The waters come in huge carafes which I loved...as I can drink a gallon of water while eating chips and salsa! The chips and salsa came quickly and we only had to wait a few minutes to order. You could hear people karaoking towards the back of the restaurant which I didn't mind! But I also love karaoke! The vibe was great, the staff was friendly, service was fairly quick, and my only disappointment was the lack of a 'wow' factor with the drinks and food. Which I don't mean to sound harsh! It's just my expectations grew when I walked into the door! We got a michelada and a margarita. Which both were okay, but tasted like the same kind you can get at the grocery store for cheaper. And then we ordered the 'Mexican Corn' which was also, okay. I can't put my finger on it but it just had a different flavor than others I've had in the past. Our entrees arrived pretty quick and were seasoned well and the portions were huge! We couldn't even finish the burrito! So we have lunch for tomorrow.
