Have you ever eaten something but been disappointed in it so you continue to crave it until you have a better experience? Yesterday I tried the newer Hawaiian place across town and because JJ Hawaiian BBQ was the only one I've ever had before I was expecting something really good but that wasn't my experience there so today I woke up still wanting something good. I placed an order but this time tried something that I have never had before here. Although I've liked everything I've eaten here one of my standard favorites has been the salad with the added spicy chicken but today I ordered the Hawaiian plate that had two items and I chose the spicy chicken and for something new I decided to try the grilled shrimp. Sometimes shrimp can be a little "too shrimpy" you know when it's got a very strong fishy shrimpy thing going on and it's not great but this was delicious! This comes with rice as well so I mixed some of the chicken and shrimp up in the rice together and it was a very satisfying meal. I also ordered the Thai iced tea today which I don't often drink because of the calories but it tasted good and I would definitely recommend it. Once again I have never been disappointed in anything here. My orders have always been right and the food is delicious. I absolutely love their salads and you can change them up every time with a different protein. I definitely don't think they have anything to worry about with the new place opening up across town because there is absolutely no comparison JJ Hawaiian BBQ is so much better! Lots of choices in strip center. Very clean store front. plenty of room to eat in. Attentive two gals taking orders at counter. Forget about counting carbs here as plenty of rice with entrees. I didn't take pics inside aside from my chicken teriyaki bowl and Beef musabi. I'll say both good. Ate bowl may lunch and musabi later day. Good tasting. And reasonable pricing. I've been going to JJ Hawaiian BBQ in Porterville since it opened. I visit once or twice a week, and it is a regular option when deciding where to eat in town. The food is consistently prepared. I usually order a pick 2 with Hawaiian spicy chicken and chicken katsu, and substitute the green salad for extra Mac. The price is reasonable for the quality and portions sizes keeping my meal under $20. It offers a style of Hawaiian cuisine that is not widely available in the area. Not sure what to eat on this Friday work day in Porterville I happened across this restaurant tucked among other fast food options so I decided to give it a go. So I'm giving this place a rare 5 star rating for a few reasons. One...the price vs amount of food, 2 speed with which the food came out and 3 the quality of the food. I ordered the number 2 Chicken Katsu plate with a side of rice and macaroni salad. The chicken was crispy and tender and both the rice and macaroni were on point. The price for the plate was just under $12 which may not seem cheap but if you consider that you get enough chicken and sides to legitimately feed 2 adults then this becomes a bargain. Also they were pretty speedy in getting this out to me and to be honest I've had less than stellar experiences with other Hawaiian BBQ joints in that respect. If you're on lunch and in a hurry but want something of quality then I recommend this restaurant highly. read more

We have become regulars. The owners and staff are super nice and helpful, even when they are busy. Our family favorites are: Katsu chicken, Musubi add sesame seeds, Barbecue Platter, & orange chicken easy on the sauce. Local bought ingredients homemade in their kitchen, we feel good about eating JJ's real Hawaiian food. FYI there is a "secret" menu. Order the spam fries! The owner is always adding new things. Stopped by to try all the new establishments Porterville has to offer. I was disappointed with this trip. First off, the chefs in the back are not wearing masks. Now, I understand masks can be tedious and uncomfortable, however, I have grown to expect employees at restaurants to wear them if we are also required to. Secondly, my order was incorrect. Luckily, I checked the bag before I left. After making me feel like I made a mistake, they took my receipt, looked at it and prepared my missing items. Lastly, I got the vibe that the chefs and the cashier don't get along. The chefs in the back prepared the food, plated it, and near threw the plates on the window where the cashier would bag them up for customers. The restaurant lobby was not busy, maybe 2 other people were there. It took about 25 minutes to order and pick up. One thing I really enjoyed were the blue chairs.
