Normally this is my 'go-to' place for Mexican food. I have been going there for years and the service has always been great and the food wonderful. The past several times I have been, the service has gone down. They take forever to wait on you when they are not busy, they bring out the wrong food. The information you get is inconsistent. I went here and ordered dinner steak fajitas which typically comes with three tortillas. The last two times I have been they only gave me two. I usually eat two and take the last one home with me. I asked for one more one time and the waiter says of course you can have as many as you want. The next time the same thing happened only the waiter charged me for 'extra' tortillas. It was a trip getting it worked out at the register. I haven't seen the manger or owner there as much lately. Maybe this is why they are starting to slack. read more

This is *the* place to go for Mexican food. It's the only place my family will go to for Mexican food in town now. The guys always get shrimp with garlic or the diablo & I bounce around quite content with many of the enchillada choices, or since I am often one handed w/ our son these days I'll do a Nacho's Fajita. By far the BEST place I have ever eaten for Mexican food. The service is excellent, your drink never reaches the bottom, the kitchen is on top of it, we often joke that they must have started our order when they see us pull in the parking lot. We love this place! Everyone is always nice, and the manager comes around asking if you need anything. This isn't the first time we've been but it is the first night we ordered camerones fundidos. My dad ordered the dish and got 14+ large (maybe jumbo?) shrimp. Most places give your 4 or 5 small shrimp. For $14 this was a steal! The shrimp was perfectly cooked and not smothered in cheese. Everything else was perfect as always, and we all left with leftovers. This is our go-to place for Mexican. read more

El Maguey is one of our favorite Mexican restaurants. My mother is from Vera Cruz and I was raised in a Mexican area of Los Angeles. Service has always been excellent and food is tasty and fresh. They must have several different cooks, flavors and preparation may vary. Shrimp dishes are excellent, especially mojo de ajo. They change the menu occasionally and always have a good crowd, especially on weekends. No mole poblano and we miss some of the more exotic touches, like handmade tortillas and guacamole made with RIPE avocados. read more

I have since switched to Pancho Villa's for Mexican. It is cheaper and tastes better. I still like El Maguey, their salsa is better- but we don't go very often anymore since finding Pancho Villa's- and we live much closer to El Maguey. They need to lower their prices. read more

Ate at the Pfafftown restaurant and my daughter contracted food poisoning, with violent diarrhea and vomiting. For whatever it's worth, she had ordered "Lolol Marruecos". I hardly ever write reviews but, in this case, I felt it was warranted. Needless to say I will no longer be a patron. read more

My dad and I went there tonight. I go there quite often, which is saying a lot because it's about 20 minutes from where I live. The food was good, but the server and assistant manager were extremely rude. I always bring part of my meal home with me, and the manager or server will give me complimentary chips and salsa to take with me. The server tonight said he couldn't do that, and instead of handling it with us directly, he went whining to his assistant manager. The AM came to our table and gave excuse after excuse. And to top it off I went to him as I was leaving and told him how upset I was at both him and the server. He said he couldn't do it and it wasn't his decision. Neither of them offered to-go sodas, which they always do. I told him that too. He walked away from me, which really upset me. That chips and salsa would've coat them nothing. My bet is, they're getting greedy since they reopened because of COVID-19. That's extremely poor management and customer service. I love going to eat there, but I'll have to think twice the second time. I'm VERY upset. read more

I have visited this restaurant and both time the food and staff were wonderful. The first time was Taco Tuesday and the tacos were on special. It was very busy but the staff was very friendly and the food arrived promptly and was delicious! The food was high quality and very flavorful! I had 3 beef tacos, cheese dip, rice and a drink for under $8. The second time, I order a rib eye steak with rice, beans and salad. All the food was very fresh, flavorful and delicious. I almost don't want to write this and crowd up one of my favorite restaurants, but El Maguey is by far the best Mexican restaurant in the Winston Salem area! Great food, great drinks, and great service! Everyone knows Delphino, the manager, by name, and he makes sure to personally assure that every customer is being taken care of. My wife is from Mexico, and we've tried all of the local Mexican restaurants. Most are good at one thing or another, but never all. El Maguey is the complete package! Is it the most authentic Mexican food? Sometimes yes, but not always, but this is the triad, and the food is always GREAT! Far better than those snooty, over-priced Mexican restaurants with their fake claims of authenticity. The margaritas are always delicious, never watered-down, and the service is always fast and friendly. It all adds together and just feels like you're in Mexico! The best Mexican restaurant in Forsyth County, well anywhere ... hands down! They have great combo selections that come with beans and rice. If you are not up for refried beans and Spanish rice, they are happy to sub out white rice and black beans. The guacamole is amazing. You are greeted with a quick basket of warm tortilla chips and fantastic salsa. The managers are excellent, always coming around to make sure you are happy ... especially Carlos! They also make the best flan I have ever had. Make sure to order some for dessert. We eat here as often as possible. Don't let the strip mall location set you off ... this place is well worth a visit! read more

This has been our family go to place for Mexican food for many years. The quality of the food, service and accuracy of orders has declined over the last several years. Take out orders are often inaccurate and missing items from the dishes. The Pollo Jalisco tonight was missing the melted cheese, tomato sauce, lettuce, sour cream, guacamole and tortillas. My family used to frequent El Maguey a lot and I remember them being much better. I ordered the Chimichangas and they came out soggy, suggesting the cook doesn't know how to fry things properly. The beef in the chimichanga was also really low quality and they don't carry black beans at all. I should add that the vegetables my mother ordered were extremely fresh, and the chips and salsa were good, but I was really looking for a good entree.
