I am a huge fan of El Maguey, though this was my first time at this location. The ordering process over the phone was easy. The restaurant felt clean and comfortable as I waited for my made fresh order. Everything was beyond delicious as we got a combination plate, steak quesadillas and chicken quesadillas. Of course we got cheese dip and chips too. For take out they do charge a $.75 take out fee per person, which is understandable. Definitely will be back for dine in and take out. read more

We have been coming to this El Maguey since my son was very young. They used to be a little bit further down the road, but have been in this new location for many years. I usually stick with the same few things, either the Carne Asada tacos or Carne Asada burrito or the Caldo de Pollo. Their cheese sauce is very good, but also very runny so it's a mess to eat. Haha! Consistent food, and good service. It's pretty standard Americanized Mexican food so we know what to expect comforting on a cold evening. read more

I was there for a business lunch. I was empty when I arrive. But it quickly became busy. It a nice place to relax and eat. Murals on the wall. Great ethnic food to eat. The portion size are huge. Service was great. I don't recall his name but he kept an eye ob us. My water was getting low. I saw him out of the corner of my eyes. I didn't say anything. Next thing I know he brought me a new glass of water. The place is a vibe. I ordered the the chicken Quesadilla. I was good. I couldn't eat it all. The salsa was just okay. The restaurant was fairly crowded when we arrived and it took about 10 minutes after we were seated before we had anyone at our table. Such a cool restaurant. Reasonable prices and great food. The place is Decorated with bright and beautiful Mexican themed furniture! We went in on Saturday around 4:30. It was pretty busy and loud in the main dining area so we requested to sit in a back. It was perfect. Our waiter was amazing, funny and friendly. Started with the chips and salsa. The salsa was really good. I don't love super spicy food but this has just enough kick. Also got queso for the chips. There is a charge for it but worth it for sure. We tried a variety of dishes including fajitas, burrito fajita, Changas, nachos and jalapeños. All were so good and very large portions. Definitely will go again when we are in St. Louis. read more

About what I expected here. I wasn't sure who our server was because we had a different person come up to us each time but everyone who did was friendly. However, we weren't checked in often and we waited awhile to get our drink order in. Everything came out super fast which was nice considering service was pretty slow. I have worked in the restaurant industry so i understand it's annoying when people come in close to close but when we finished eating the restaurant still had at least 30 minutes before they closed so I don't think that made sense for why the service was lacking a little bit and the restaurant wasn't very busy. Food was subpar. Overall, I think you would be better off going to one of the other Mexican restaurants in the area, I've had better experiences at the other ones. Great spot for Mexican food! The margarita was a bit sweet for my taste, but still good! The free chips and salsa were great - not too spicy, I added some of the hot sauce on the table to the salsa haha. The chips were a bit stale but still hit the spot! I have no idea why this restaurant only has 3 stars. It's our favorite local Mexican restaurant. On most visits our food is ready in 15 minutes and it's ALWAYS delicious. I ordered off-menu at our last visit... they don't offer pozole but they obliged. It was fantastic and a HUGE serving, enough for lunch the next day. Tonight I had my go-to, the shrimp fajitas. Delish as usual. The dining area is colorful, cheery, and clean. The servers are quiet but friendly and fast. If there's an issue, they have always been quick to fix it. Tonight is Valentine's dinner service - they've increased their staffing to handle the crowd. We're here, however, because I was told this afternoon that I can defend my doctoral thesis. 7 years, you guys, to bring you a non-toxic cancer treatment. Excellent food, well seasoned, fresh tortilla chips and salsas as complementary. Food comes out hot and reasonably priced. Decor: beautiful place with pop out arts on walls and booths - truly an immersive experience and impressive arts throughout - reminds me of those tables I've seen while eating street food... guessing that's the idea here. Service: could be better and need to work as a team. The servers could check in more often, bring checks without customers asking. Cashier doesn't seem like he wants to be there. There are so many reasonable and tasty Mexican restaurants in St. Charles, it's hard to pick the best one at times. El Maguey is a long time favorite chain that greets you promptly with fresh salsa and chips. Lunches and dinners are all tasty and served quickly. This has been my least favorite El Maguey in St. Charles County. I decided after over 7 years to give them another try for carry out, which was a huge mistake. I ordered a chicken quesadilla and it was hardly cooked. There was little to no color on the tortilla and had hardly any cheese. It was so soggy from not being cooked long enough the tortilla was mushy. My beef enchiladas had what tasted like salsa on top, not enchilada sauce. And that was also very minimal. The beef had either bone fragments or pieces of broken plate mixed in it. There are plenty of other great Mexican restaurants in the area, try them instead. read more

Coming from San Diego, I was super hesitant to try the Mexican food out here. I must say I'm glad I gave it a chance. This was my first time trying Mexican food outside of Southern California. I got the Burrito California ($12) without onions. Once it came out, my eyes lit up; it was HUGE! I knew instantly I was going to need a to-go box for it. The size of that thing was impressive. Inside it had mushrooms, steak, beans, rice, and tomatoes. Then it was topped with a generous amount of cheese and enchilada sauce. I'm so used to eating burritos from California taco shops with my hands. But of course I ate it this thing with a knife and a fork. I got maybe half way done until I was stuffed. It honestly was pretty good, I couldn't eat it fast enough. And the leftovers were still just as good. A little soggy, but good. El Maguey has a great ambiance. They're so generous with their chips and salsa. It's a super social environment and lots of margaritas around, so people can get loud at times. I used to love this place but the food and customer service has gone downhill. Watery tasteless Salsa and even blander saltless chips. Adding salt after the fact doesnt help as it mostly just rolls off the chips to the bottom of the basket. The shredded chicken nachos were one of my favorites along with the chicken chimichanga. Both with the delicious queso on top! The shredded chicken/pepper mixture is now just totally flavorless. The last time I went I got the chicken nachos again, and there was hardly any queso on them, we're talking nachos here, isnt that the main staple on the chips? What little they put on had soaked into the chicken so it was a plate of dry chips. I ate a few chips just to see and yep dry cheeseless chips, even people at our table agreed. I showed them to the server and asked if she could take my plate and have them add a little more queso on them. She said sorry that's how we make them. Well it's not how you used to make them.... I said they are just dry chips. She said I could pay for the queso appetizer to pour on them. Ridiculous! I won't be back. read more

El Maguay restaurant never fails to please. They prepare and serve some of the most authentic Latin food in St Petersburg, FL. First time I ordered there the food was too salty. Salt is to bring out flavor, not be the flavor. Next time I ordered the food was not over salted, so they seem to have fixed the issue. Their Menudo is clean, not filled with a bunch of pepper skin and seeds. Their Tamales are always good. Chili Rellenos are fixed correctly. The Lingua in Verde was sooooo tasty. They provide the standard cilantro, onion and limes of Latino cooking. The next thing would be to use shredded cabbage rather lettuce. So many places say they serve "authentic" Mexican food, but they're not. I truly recommend El Maguay. The food and service are great! read more

All our drinks were empty for about 45 minutes and never got any refills. Had to ask hostess to bring our check so we could leave. Servers all wanted to either sit up front around the hostess station or stay in the back. There were a couple servers that look to be doing a decent job but those were 2 out of around 6. Eat here all the time, always crowded, but waits are short. If you dont get a handshake, chips and salsa from the patriarch/ father of the family with a big "ola amigo" in the 1st 3 minutes your in there, theres something wrong. Go for the pollo feliz which is our favorite. Made with still sizzling shrimp, veg, cheese n chicken, you cant go wrong and will probably get 2 great meals out of it. This is our main spot for what I call Tex-Mex. The waiters are all friendly, granted some are better and more attentive than others. But that's anywhere you go. I love that it's family owned and they let the kids work there... Perhaps that's who people are complaining about being on their phone, but those are typical teenagers and I'm sure are learning lessons. Food is consistently good and they will make accommodations for you. If you don't like something, let them know and send it back, they will make it right! For anybody saying the chips and salsa tastes like soap, that's because you have an aversion to cilantro, it's not on the Mexican restaurant. Look it up instead of trashing somebody's reputation because of your DNA. If you like a good Tex-Mex and friendly atmosphere, this place is for you. El Maguey isn't so cheap anymore. Don't get me wrong, it's not expensive, but they've definitely raised their prices. The food is decent. You need to be careful ordering if you don't want beef, beef, and beef....on, in and around a tortilla. Some of the combos can be monotonous. I enjoy the Enchiladas Verdes. I could write a novel about how much I love the strawberry margaritas. These margs have serious tequila. I love when the glass develops a layer of ice on the outside and you know the alcohol in that glass is serious. :) El Maguey is a good choice for inexpensive, decent Mexican food with average service. read more

Mexican is one of those cuisines where I don't think it matters what I've ordered because I'm pretty sure most of it tastes the same. In terms of non-standard Mexican items - you know, the stuff Taco Bell doesn't whip up regularly at two notches worse - I had some type of quesadilla here with chorizo that was quite good. We visit this place regularly however the expectation is not very high. This is a local St. Louis chain that has Mexican food however seems the salsa is lacking in flavor for starters. Queso is subpar compared to other restaurants nearby. Chips generally not stale, however you won't be offered a second basket so don't even bother waiting. If this place wasn't so close to my house we would never go there. Have tried several of the items on the menu, ground beef is watery,Chicken is decent, steak is tough. Sauces have decent flavor to them. Would only recommend this restaurant if it's nearby and you're in a hurry. There are much better options right down the street. read more

But last night after waiting for our pick up for an hour(to be expected with cinco demayo) I get to the restaurant, wait in long line in the middle of everyone eating, finally get up there and no food. No order, look for it, can't find it, no offer to fix it, just no order. As we all know restaurants have gotten very good at pick up but they haven't.
