I am a huge fan of El Maguey, though this was my first time at this location. The ordering process over the phone was easy. The restaurant felt clean and comfortable as I waited for my made fresh order. Everything was beyond delicious as we got a combination plate, steak quesadillas and chicken quesadillas. Of course we got cheese dip and chips too. For take out they do charge a $.75 take out fee per person, which is understandable. Definitely will be back for dine in and take out.

Ordered 6 tacos a quesadilla and chicken Felix to go. Spent $60. Everything thing looked great except for the twist tie in my beef taco. I contacted the restaurant and they are going to replace the tacos.

We have been coming to this El Maguey since my son was very young. They used to be a little bit further down the road, but have been in this new location for many years. I usually stick with the same few things, either the Carne Asada tacos or Carne Asada burrito or the Caldo de Pollo. Their cheese sauce is very good, but also very runny so it's a mess to eat. Haha! Consistent food, and good service. It's pretty standard Americanized Mexican food so we know what to expect comforting on a cold evening.

I was there for a business lunch. I was empty when I arrive. But it quickly became busy. It a nice place to relax and eat. Murals on the wall. Great ethnic food to eat. The portion size are huge. Service was great. I don't recall his name but he kept an eye ob us. My water was getting low. I saw him out of the corner of my eyes. I didn't say anything. Next thing I know he brought me a new glass of water. The place is a vibe. I ordered the the chicken Quesadilla. I was good. I couldn't eat it all. The salsa was just okay. But everything else was great. They have plenty of parking. I wish I was there in the evening to try one of their margaritas specials.

Part of a chain of restaurants around the area and decided to give it another try. The restaurant was fairly crowded when we arrived and it took about 10 minutes after we were seated before we had anyone at our table. The chips and salsa were nothing special with the salsa being rather bland that being said the chimichanga was filled with chicken and beef and so delicious.

About what I expected here. I wasn't sure who our server was because we had a different person come up to us each time but everyone who did was friendly. However, we weren't checked in often and we waited awhile to get our drink order in. Everything came out super fast which was nice considering service was pretty slow. I have worked in the restaurant industry so i understand it's annoying when people come in close to close but when we finished eating the restaurant still had at least 30 minutes before they closed so I don't think that made sense for why the service was lacking a little bit and the restaurant wasn't very busy. Food was subpar. Overall, I think you would be better off going to one of the other Mexican restaurants in the area, I've had better experiences at the other ones. It was by no means bad but nothing that would draw me to come back either.

This restaurant 's ambiance is always up-beat. Filled with tons of friends and family. When you walk in the door, watch out for the delicious, tempting candy. The service is an A+ as soon as you get there. My daughter loves the kids menu and the entrees for all adults are delicious too.

Great spot for Mexican food! The margarita was a bit sweet for my taste, but still good! The free chips and salsa were great - not too spicy, I added some of the hot sauce on the table to the salsa haha. The chips were a bit stale but still hit the spot! The chimichanga with chicken was delicious!! I'm not a big refried beans and rice person but the guac and pico on the side was delicious and refreshing with the chimichanga! Great spot, would likely go again

I have no idea why this restaurant only has 3 stars. It's our favorite local Mexican restaurant. On most visits our food is ready in 15 minutes and it's ALWAYS delicious. I ordered off-menu at our last visit... they don't offer pozole but they obliged. It was fantastic and a HUGE serving, enough for lunch the next day. Tonight I had my go-to, the shrimp fajitas. Delish as usual. The dining area is colorful, cheery, and clean. The servers are quiet but friendly and fast. If there's an issue, they have always been quick to fix it. Tonight is Valentine's dinner service - they've increased their staffing to handle the crowd. We're here, however, because I was told this afternoon that I can defend my doctoral thesis. 7 years, you guys, to bring you a non-toxic cancer treatment. Come here and enjoy a giant margarita to celebrate any time!

Excellent food, well seasoned, fresh tortilla chips and salsas as complementary. Food comes out hot and reasonably priced. Decor: beautiful place with pop out arts on walls and booths - truly an immersive experience and impressive arts throughout - reminds me of those tables I've seen while eating street food... guessing that's the idea here. Service: could be better and need to work as a team. The servers could check in more often, bring checks without customers asking. Cashier doesn't seem like he wants to be there. Overall, we're likely coming back for the food, food, food and dining in experience. Will update review when service improves or other changes.

There are so many reasonable and tasty Mexican restaurants in St. Charles, it's hard to pick the best one at times. El Maguey is a long time favorite chain that greets you promptly with fresh salsa and chips. Lunches and dinners are all tasty and served quickly. I don't recall a bad meal ever after many years of dining here. We always get fajitas for one with an extra order of tortillas. A single order is more than enough for two....actually we had some left over!

What I received was a tortilla shell with gray liquid beans. Needless to say it was inedible. The manager came and asked what he could do. I ordered the veggie fajitas instead. I was once again brought a bowl of gray bean soup. When I asked about it I the waitress pointed to it and said "fajita". I the manager came over again and I told him I was not going to eat it, did not want anything else, and asked him to take it off of our bill. My mother also ordered a taco salad and also received a sub par inedible bowl of mush. When the rest of my family received their food it was also terrible. The guacamole was obviously off. It tasted like it had been sitting out for days. The meat in their meals also tasted off. They were unable to eat it. When my brother asked for the meals to be taken off of the bill we were brought take out boxes instead. Which we obviously did not use. When attempting to explain to the manager that we should not have to pay for food that was inedible, he accused us of insulting his food. He was unwilling to compromise at all. He took off my salad and demanded that my brother pay the entire bill despite no one being able to eat. If that was not enough, he went outside and photographed my vehicle and license plate. My brother was forced to pay under duress and the threat of calling the police. When confronted about the photo and telling the manager that I needed him to delete it while I watched, he said he already did and once again threatened us with calling the police. The bill had been paid in full!!! If that was not enough to qualify as a terrible experience, my entire family became sick later last night from the few bites they had taken. There is no way to contact an owner as the "specific individual ownership details for the El Agave location in St. Charles (Elm St) are privately held and not publicly detailed by name in state registries or local filings". How convenient! I also found this in my search for avenues of recourse: "Specific health department inspection scores and ratings for El Agave are not published directly in a static summary online". This manager took no responsibility for any of his actions or the quality of his food. When my mother called last night to let them know that she was sick, after they said hello and she started speaking, they did not say another word. I know this is long winded, but I believe people need to know of the unethical business practices going on there. I have reported them to the health department. It is NO coincidence when 5/6 people get sick after eating at a restaurant. I was the only one not to get sick and all I ate was chips. It is impossible to use their star rating as zero stars is not an option.
