To celebrate Cinco de Mayo, I took my wife to Chimi's Fresh-Mex (the Rock Road location). It had been a few years since our last visit, so we weren't sure what to expect. We arrived about 10 minutes before 5:00 p.m., and the place was already packed--impressive considering the restaurant has a large dining area. Even so, we were seated within a couple of minutes, which was a great start. For how busy it was, the service really stood out. It was quick, attentive, and well-managed throughout our visit. My wife ordered the vegetarian fajitas with a glass of Pinot Grigio, and I went with the chicken fajitas and a Corona. Our food arrived in about 10 minutes, which was surprisingly fast given the crowd. The complimentary chips and salsa were fresh and flavorful, and both fajita dishes were cooked perfectly and tasted great. Everything came out hot and well-prepared. Overall, I was genuinely impressed. On one of the busiest days of the year for a Mexican restaurant, both the food and service were on point. I haven't been to a Chimis in a very long time so a friend decided to stop in for lunch. Service was pretty steady during lunch and our server was pretty prompt. We ordered frozen margarita which were really good but sweet. We ordered from the lunch menu which is smaller portions than the lunch but just enough food. The shredded chicken in my enchilada was bland but the shredded beef was good in my chimi. Their refried beans are runny which didn't bother me as it was still good. I came here with a group for a group dinner. There were supposed to be 10 of us, 8 showed up. We were able to get a table on a weeknight right away. Pros: - server offered to do individual checks right away knowing we were a group - salsa is amazing - food was good, I got a combo with tamale and flautas and enjoyed it. I also liked that it came with corn cake and sour cream - affordable Cons: - I ordered my combo specifically because it had a corn cake... corn cake was served on top of lettuce, cold. Dissapointing. - Service overall was slow... they were not busy, our waiter was not serving lots of tables, but it took a while to get drinks, salsa refills and to order. My friend's chimichanga was straight out of the freezer and you could tell as it had freezer burn on it and it was still frozen I side. I just think it's funny that in my 20+ years of life the inflation has never affected this commodity but now that everyone is price gouging us they join the train. This was my second time going to this particular Chimi's with the same result. They (all the servers except maybe one) pretend they don't speak English. For instance, this visit was a Saturday afternoon and college football was on ABC, CBS, & ESPN, but every television was on a satellite station broadcasting a soccer game. I asked my server if he would change the Television in front of where I was sitting to one of the three networks I have mentioned and he went and got a guy & I repeated everything again and this guy went and got a guy, then all over again and this guy said nothing but did bring 3 remotes and (LOL) none of them operated the t.v. in front of me. My son and I visited this location, we were literally in and out because of the speedy service from the staff. I order a combo plate which included a chicken enchilada and burrito with a side of beans. My son ordered a beef enchilada and soft taco with beans. Where are we when the entire table is placing bets as to whether we can substitute corncake for something else that day? Chimis! I've got a new one. What restaurant am I calling to order a to go meal where the phone is answered three times, each time I'm told I can order, and the second I begin to order I hear, "Okay!" and then they hang up? As soon as I landed in St. Louis, this was the first place my friend and I came to eat. We both ordered meals and food was excellent. I can't speak to my friend's food, but I ordered vegetable burritos. It was good, but wish there was more green peppers and onions. The chips were really good. A group of co-workers used to frequent this location probably on a weekly basis. This last visit our server wrote 1 order incorrectly, he did correct it but most everyone was finishing up before the person received their correct order. This would have been acceptable; however when the server brought the food he apologized but then added a very crude remark (in his native language) about the person . I guess he didn't realize we understood the language! It was crude enough that no one in our group will return because of it. The servicer or lack there of had to be reminder multiple times of 1 person's drink order he even told one of us to "hold on" and then went to another table. Chimi's Fresh Mex made quite an impression on my mother and I when we utilized her Groupon for an early dinner. The deets: Chips & salsa appeared on the table almost immediately after we sat down. Almost any place that gives me something to munch on while I await my entrée already has a leg up in my book. Food - we both ordered fajitas: I got steak and chicken and mom got steak. Their telltale sizzling, and wonderfully steamy aroma, arrived at the table moments before the plates, accompanied by sautéed onions and peppers. Verdict - PERFECTLY cooked, juicy steak, three flour tortillas, beans and cheese, rice, pico, lettuce, sour cream. Drinks - I got a medium lime margarita on the rocks with salt and mom got a small frozen lime margarita with salt. Verdict - My drink came in nice fishbowl glass and was super cold, but mom and I both agreed that the margarita mix in both of our drinks was a little...off. Like, it had a fake lime-y taste, slightly offensive odor, and strange darkish green hue, versus the brighter yellowish, smooth margaritas we've had elsewhere. It was heavy on the alcohol. I know...that description sounds weird. It's hard to articulate, but let's just say I wouldn't get the same thing to drink again. Service - attentive, friendly and prompt! Decor - awesome. The little racks for salt, pepper, hot sauce, etc. were small wooden crate type doodads mounted on the wall. This afforded us more table space, which I thought was super cool! I've never seen anything like that before. Groupon - totally worth it. I get it is a Sunday, but not having a host/hostess is ridiculous for dinner rush. We waited for 5 minutes t be acknowledged by anyone( the employees kept ignoring us) Then had to ask a server if we could be seated.Then had to ask to be actually served. Our server Sergio was fantastic! The food? Ew.The margarita looked gross, my soup was luke warm, the "burrito" were two enchiladas. I will not be back to this restaurant. We did go here on a very busy night, I tried to order a frozen margarita then our server told me the machine was broken so I was very disappointed with that. I ordered 3 enchiladas and said 1 cheese but I got 1 filled with chicken instead, I asked our server if I could get the cheese enchilada like I ordered, she said fine. But it never came out. I asked a couple more times and it never came out and I waited a very long time. I guess its good to point out, that our original orders came out very quick, the food quality is pretty average, nothing to rave about. But the service here is not great at all. I don't know if I would come back again. I could not even get my water refilled when I asked. There are better cheap Mexican type joints around town. We used to order from here all the time and the last few times they have either forgotten an item Or just got our order wrong. I even left a positive review 3 years ago! The food can be good, but the portion sizes/quality are inconsistent. They always forget our chips and salsa and will make you pay for it if you try to get delivery. When we called to report our items missing, they hung up on us!!! With so many great restaurants in our area, don't waste your time here! The service is terrible, the staff is not friendly. On my second visit I had a chicken quesadillas; and while the ingredients were noticeably fresh, there was so much cheese I couldn't taste anything else but the cheese. I don't like really thick slices of chicken so the fact it was thinly sliced was great for me. Unquestionably, this place is better than the ubiquitous Taco Bell and it is also wallet-friendly. We've been to the St. Charles Chimis several times. However, there was a groupon for this location so we got that. The groupon DID extend its date because of covid, so that was nice. I'll be honest, it was my fault for not reading the "fine print" and i found out the groupon was dine-in only. My folks are in their 70's and we're not comfortable with dine in. I was told I couldn't use my groupon for my carry out. I thought about asking for a table and just sitting there taking up a table and then asking for a bunch of doggie bags, but that would be rude. Also, the salchicha (sausage) dip was TERRIBLE. Sadly, we only ordered it because there was money left over on the groupon. We had to wait to be seated as cashier was busy taking to go order but once seated we were served big basket of warm thin chips & spicy salsa but not too hot just a kick!
