There's a couple of tables to set while waiting, or to eat at, but they're rather small and cramped. Do yourself the favor of taking it to go, so you can spread out in your own home, and really get your grub on. And you must absolutely try the barbacoa tacos, if you're lucky enough for them to have not run out by the time you get there! Their chicken tamales are amazing. I will definitely be going back for more. Nice size serving and so much more satisfying to eat 2 for lunch than a fast food hamburger. The price is reasonable for the number of tamales. They have an assortment of Talera bread and sweetbreads in the bakery section and a small produce section as well. You can buy soaps and shampoos/conditioners found in Mexico, including a chamomile shampoo that naturally lightens hair, lavendar soap, rose soap, and donkey milk soap. Kinda curious about the donkey milk soap actually... I bought a strawberry aloe vera drink here (goes REALLY well with the to-go food) and some crema Fresca too (delicious white crumbling cheese....an EXCELLENT and fulfilling protein snack between meals or part of quesadillas you can make at home for quick lunch/dinner). Next time I come back I'm going to try their tacos, chicarrones, fajitas, chorizo sausage, chicken breasts, ground beat, pork chops, and pick up some masa flour to try to make tamales myself. Seriously amazing tacos. They are $2.25 each, so a little on the expensive side for tacos. But they are 'packed' full.... Almost difficult to pick up because so much meat & toppings. I had 2 steak and 1 pastor. All the meat was chopped in small pieces. And was cooked until it it was crispy/crunchy on the outside (from the grill), & juicy on inside. One of my favorite specialty food markets to visit when in Illinois. Not as big of a selection as the neighborhood markets I remember as a child, but all of the smells and flavors I remember. Prices are still cheaper than any of the huge supermarket around. The tamales are scrumptious, the chicharones are salty, meaty and crunchy as they should be! Plenty of dried chilies & specially spices to choose from. Meat is cut and trimmed right in front of you, no mystery meat here! The beef short are not displayed in the meat counter but the usually have them in the back if you ask! I love this super mercado!!! I will definitely go back!! read more

Authentic Mexican store. Plenty of options from the butcher, some selection of cheeses, and dry goods. The counter in the back has some tasty tacos made fresh( coming from a Mexican who was raised with authentic tacos from the city and joliet). Best in shorewood and surrounding area. Review is more for the taqueria in the back, but the atmosphere was dirty and not too well-kept. Was pretty hungry at the time so I ordered 3 tacos, a steak burrito, and a milanesa torta. Everything was pretty good overall, wished they would of given me a variety (red & green) of hot sauces as I got a big thing of some kind of a hot mole black sauce, which I didn't like at all. I usually get specific meat from here and it has been fresh every time. The food is great. They offer a lot of groceries also and important products. Those are pricey compared to larger grocery stores but it's a good location for a quick in and out need or to avoid large crowds. read more

I went in El Mercado with my 3 children to buy some arrechera (skirt steak) some tortillas , and some salsa. I was not greeted by anyone.. Nor was I told " I'll be with you in a moment". I waited 5-7 minutes for the butcher to come back there to help me.. I saw he was busy taking care of a customer in the little restaurant part. Ok, fine, no big deal. Once he finally comes back to help me , I ask him for 5 lbs. He takes it out and before he weighs it, a woman stood next to me, after he weighs my meat and sets it on the counter, proceeds to ask this woman what she needs.. He got her everything she asked while he knew I had been waiting there by that time almost 15 min! I was honestly very hurt and upset that he could treat someone this way? By the way , I am Caucasian.. And the woman next to me was Hispanic.. I have never felt so discriminated against.. Not to mention, but my children are half Hispanic.. So I'm assuming, considering the way I was treated that I guess they only give good service to their own kind?.. I prayed as I was standing there and once he was done taking care of the woman, I just took my kids and left.. I was clearly treated like crap for what? Because I'm not Hispanic? I love everyone and I definitely have prayed for this man.. He obviously had bad experiences with people of " my kind" I guess... I don't feel ANYONE should ever be treated this way ANYWHERE... My heart was heavy and sad... This experience just taught me that there are many in this sad world that need our Savior, Jesus Christ.. read more
