Mystery meat tacos aside, the food was generally your average Memphis Mexican restaurant. The menu is so overwhelming, with 500+ items its hard to nail down something that speaks to the hunger craving. The people i was eating with all got things they usually like and it was just a plain, could do better at home quality. The steak Chimichanga only had steak in it. Nothing else to add flavor or to balance out the only well done low quality strips of beef that they shoved into a tortilla and fried. As for the mystery meat taco. If your "ground beef" is so finely chopped it resembles sand, and has zero seasoning who would want to eat anything else? A pack of Old El Paso taco seasoning thrown in would have pumped up the quality of the meat to at least an average taco. Why is the meat so granual? Where is the seasoning? If you are looking for a resemblence of some type of Mexican food you have many other great options. Avoid this one. Queso always warrants an extra star. read more

The food was excellent. The server was friendly and attentive. My daughter had a school assignment to order her meal in Spanish and the server was very kind in allowing me to video her order to turn in the video to her teacher. It wasn't very crowded on a 2:00 Sunday afternoon and the food was delivered promptly to the table. We had a coupon to buy one lunch entree and get one free, which they were happy to accept. For my daughter and myself the total was $24 plus $5 tip after the application of the coupon. Our entrees were about $6 each, we had soft drinks and cheese dip. Without the coupon it was right at $30 for the two of us for lunch without tip. The cheese dip was in a relatively small bowl and was priced at $8 which accounts for most of my price surprise. I am just disappointed and over this El Mezcal. First off they are already a more expensive than most mexican restaurants but their quality doesn't match up. I have been here several times once for dine in and a couple times to go. Whenever I ordered to go from here it is just ridiculous. I love shrimp nachos and I have ordered this many times from other restaurants to go and have had great experiences. The several times i have ordered from them, they are lazy and stingy. They give you 5 chips and crush them to look like more. They overcook the shrimp, too where it is small & harder. They overcooked my bell peppers and gave me just about have 5 slices. The queso is always watered down it's literally the consistency of water. It's crazy. I ordered about 3x trying to give them the benefit of doubt. But no they disappointed me each time. read more

I've eaten here many times and have called in orders for pickup and the food quality is always good for a "Tex-mex" establishment. El Mezcal is on my radar for only two reasons: cheap margaritas, and cheesy burritos. This location is more lackluster in atmosphere than my previous regular location at Perkins Extd, but the service is incredibly fast. I almost always get a chicken burrito with cheese sauce and the little salad on top, or my husband and I split the rancheros burritos for a quick cheap meal. The food was perfectly fine on my first visit to this location -- not amazing Mexican food, really, but still of good quality as far as ingredients go. The service was RIDICULOUSLY fast, so that's a plus! There are a lot of other options for Mexican food in the immediate area that we generally prefer, but the next time we want to get margaritas and still spend less than $20, we will probably be back here. read more

Went on their website to look at the menu before going in. Very first thing I noticed was a giant button that said order online. Since I was goi ng on my lunch break I thought that would be convenient. I ordered my food and paid online. I waited the 15 minutes and went to get my food. When I went it and said I had ordered online they told me their online ordering system had been down for months and they had no way to refund the money. No apology for the inconvenience, just excuses and rudeness. I had heard great things about them and was excited to try their food. My wife and I come here often but tonight is by far our worst ever experience. The food was excellent as usual however the server pretty much forgot we even existed. Once she delivered our food she disappeared never returned to check to see if the food was to our liking or even check on drinks. The only time we saw her was when she did a flyby to drop the check. Full disclosure: I come here so often the wait staff knows exactly what I want down to the extra side of queso. For starters, I was greeted within a couple of minutes of walking in the door. Maybe it's because they see me often but I don't remember a time when they didn't greet me warmly and sincerely. These are people invested in a business and you won't find a high school teen-age attitude in the staff. I was seated where I requested. Seating is comfortable and they take your drink order quickly. You already have chips with chili sauce on your table before they take your drink order. When I ordered my food, it was served in 6 minutes, 29 seconds. I timed them because I knew they were good but wanted to be precise. The flavor of the food burst in your mouth. Warning: be prepared for eating here. While you could probably find diet friendly items, the temptation will likely overwhelm you. Second warning: don't come here before a long active day of shopping. This is the food you have just before going home for a long siesta. This is traditional Mexican with some American touches tossed in the menu. You will be filled. The music is festive Mexican as expected. More than anything, you will find a great staff here (very little turn-over that I've seen) who are dedicated to serving their customer. Then there is great food. You leave feeling like you just had dinner at a friends house and you are stuffed. Love my Mezcal! HIGHLY recommended! read more

I wish I could give them a zero! I have never experienced such rude and inappropriate customer service in my life! Fernando the manager treated me so poorly that two groups of people that were waiting to be seated walked out and said they would not be coming back ever. I cannot rate the food in this trip because after the way he treated me I said forget the order and he said we have already started the order so this will be theft and I will call the police (that's when a third person came up and try to intervene on my behalf because he had saw Fernando's treatment.) I told him I had never stolen anything in my life and I would pay for the order that he had started. I did so, paid in full or course no tip, and I was leaving someone was coming out of the kitchen with the order I just paid for and Fernando said she don't want it, eat it or throw it away. I was in so much shock I just left. When I left the other customer that had stepped in to help me was still going off on them. I told him than you for your help and left. Love this place! Absolutely my favorite Mexican restaurant to visit in Memphis! The chile poblano and the chimichanga are my faves. All of the servers are great especially Codie. She always makes sure that I'm taken care of and that my needs are met promptly. They are always so accommodating for my vegetarian entrees except on Wednesdays when one particular manager is there, Marlene, because she tries to charge me up to $3 more just to substitute veggies. I've come so many times that everybody knows me by name and the general manager, Martin, is always so accommodating and customer service focused. If you're trying to decided where to go for Mexican, give them a shot because you won't be disappointed!! read more

You would think you would be able to actually get a HOT salsa in a Mexican restaurant. I've been in here a couple times and every time I ask for a spicier salsa, I get this different salsa and is milder than the regular, no cilantro, no onions, no peppers! The only thing I liked here were the warm thin chips. I recently had the spinach quesadilla which lacked cheese. For it to be considered a QUESadilla I expect cheese in it. I asked for a taco which came in a hard shell taco, disappointing. I wouldn't go here if you are expecting authentic Mexican food, because it comes nowhere close. read more

My family and I have been coming here for years now. This is our restaurant every Monday night! No doubt about it! My daughter is six and always ask if we get to go eat cheese dip and see Ms. Codi! Codi has been our server for years now! She is great! She always makes sure to check on us once the food comes out and if it comes out wrong she is very good at getting this taken care of! Our glasses are always refilled and even when she is busy and doesn't have a table open in her section she still finds away to wait on us! She is a phenomenal waitress and I would recommend anyone sit in her section! Went here with my 4 kids and we sat outside. There were two women chain smoking cigarettes which is against the law I asked management about it and he said "I don't know, we've been doing this for six years and haven't gotten the cops called so..." I asked him to ask them to stop, which they didn't do. An unlawful act and management could care less there was also old ash trays full of cigarette butts on our table when we were sat. My husband and I ate here over the weekend, mostly because it got high reviews and there's always a line to get in on the weekends. So something had to be great. Ehhh, it was ok. I got fajitas and they were average. Service was incredibly slow and I had to ask for refills. They were very nice, though. The queso was good, though very lumpy. It looked like it was the bottom of the container maybe. It tasted fine, just fairly congealed. The fajitas were ok. Nothing spectacular. We usually go to another place down the street, and nothing about this visit screamed for me to leave our regular haunt and come here from now on. So we won't. Overall, it's average. Should be NO STAR--but it won't allow it!!! Huge disappointment. El Mezcal in Millington is awesome that's why I came here. The food is a big contrast compare to the one in Millington. I ordered the Camaron al Mojo Ajo--the shrimps were tiny and dry and there were no onions at all even though I know the menu listed it. When I ask the waitress she said there's not supposed to have onions and she started to show me the menu--surprise surprise "onions" in the menu. I said I wanted the onions and instead of fixing it the way it was advertised--she brought me a plate of sated onions. I didn't expect it to be exactly the same as the one in Millington but I expected to see at least what the menu advertise. I paid my 13+ bill and tipped $5. In sumary, the cook here just plain sucks! The Manager was lame in her excuses as to why it's different and the waitress just simply avoided me. I will not return nor recommend. I will drive the extra miles to Millington and get quality food. Do not even try this place... :( To the owner of this restaurant--FIX THE PROBLEM!!! You owe it to your paying customer to deliver what you advertise in the menu. read more

Okay everyone! We went back today for lunch and with amazing luck she was there! Her name is Cody and she was still as sweet as a button. We went in during lunch time where it wasn't too busy! She sat us promptly, and went above and beyond to apologize again about the mishap on Friday. She made a recommendation on the new Hawaii faja and it was to die for! She even told us about the text rewards they have to offer. This is officially our new favorite Mexican place and our favorite server. We did learn our lesson though, no more going there when they have that host, things go a lot more smoothly with out her. read more

Hello. About two weeks ago my husband and I came to eat at this restaurant, at the highway 64 location, as it is right up the street from our house. We had hoped to become regular customers at this location, until we got our food. I myself ordered a dish that contained chicken breast covered in bacon shrimp and ham. I ate a couple of bites of food until I realized, much to my disgust, that the shrimp in my food had not been cleaned. It still had all of the fecal matter(poop)inside of the shrimp, it was completely disgusting. The manager was very rude to my husband and I in handling the situation, trying to give me something else instead. But I was so grossed out,I did not want anything else from this restaurant. He eventually just took the order off, but charged for my husbands food. We are both extremely dissatisfied with the quality of food and the customer service at this location, and we will never eat here again. At least not until the staff learns some manners and the quality and cleanliness of the food improves vastly. read more

My family and I went in today at 12:30 for lunch. We were seated near the game machines and service was going fine, got drinks and our ordered cheese dip and salsa. Twenty minutes later our server is no where to be found. We finally ask the hostess to find our waiter since 3 other tables had been seated and had ordered their food and had their drinks and our table was still waiting to order. When the server eventually came around, the first thing he did was rip out pieces of paper from his pad of paper to hand us our checks and asked us if it would be on multiple checks. I told him that we hadn't even ordered and have been waiting for 20+ minutes. That's when the attitude started. He took our order but because we had been waiting so long, we were out of chips, salsa and drinks, and when we asked for more he snatched my brothers cup from him and started to walk off when I told him don't worry about it, we didn't need his attitude and we would take our business elsewhere. He in turn replied "I don't need your attitude either." When he walked back into the kitchen area, the hostess who we asked to get our server looked at me from the side of the kitchen entry with wide eyes and started to laugh at the situation. My confusion for the confrontation is, how did I have an attitude when we simply asked him to do his job? I honestly can't get over the amount of hostility toward me and my family. This is the first time this has happened in the many times we have dined at this restaurant but it will most definitely be the last time we will visit. I have to admit that I pretty much stick to the same items each time I go here, but the food is usually consistent and good. (I am a big fan of the guacamole Mexicana). I do believe the service is better at the one further out Hwy 64 across from Stonebridge, but I don't have any complaints about this one. read more
