I have a 2001 Honda. I drove it to Yuma, AZ in late January (RT was 500 miles). On the way back my engine light went on, but I made it back to Pasadena. I took it to a friend's mechanic he turned off the code & said its probably the transmission; I don't do transmission. I went online and found El Monte Transmission. WOW. This a great business run by a true gentleman who lives by the rule...I treat people the way I want to be treated. He checked my car out, drove it around, did some this, did some that, in the end the light went off and stayed off. It's not very often your transmission goes out on your vehicle. But when it does, don't hesitate to take it to John at El Monte Transmission. I was driving my cargo van home from San Diego with a trailer attached to the back. Coming up Kellogg Hill, I noticed there was some slipping. By the time I got home, my transmission was completely shot. I could start the car, put it in drive and NOTHING WOULD HAPPEN. I got the referral to El Monte Transmission from my Brake man, Scotty's Brakes. Great referral!!! My transmission went out on my Lexus es300 and I was referred to John. I had called a bunch of other places and John not only quoted me the best price, but was also the most informative. After I dropped off my car John even gave me a ride back home since I was going to take the bus; a gesture I really appreciated. John finished my car as promised in the time frame he gave me. He also informed me my engine mounts and axle on my car were broken and offered to change them for me since he would already be putting those parts back and would rather me put new parts to avoid having to have them down at a later time. Gave me a great quote again on the parts and saved me $$ and time having to get those fixed down the line. Another great gesture you don't see anymore as most places are simply trying to get as much $ out of you as possible. Not John, he actually wants to help you out. He even showed me the parts that were broken which they fixed on both my transmission and the engine mounts and axle. He was very thorough in explaining everything which I loved. My regular mechanic told me my transmission needs to be rebuilt. Went to El Monte Transmission, after reading great reviews, for a second opinion. The owner, John, determined the problem was one of the solenoids and not the transmission. He replaced the defective solenoid for a very reasonable price. I am new to Los Angeles and the transmission on my Nissan Altima went out and i looked up El Monte Transmissions. John, the owner came out to my job to diagnose my vehicle and followed me back to his shop. John later called me and told me that he had good news and bad news, the bad news is my transmission was completely shot and would cost $3000 to replace. The good news is that he called up Nissan and seen that they had an extended warranty and that he called them to ensure that it would cost me nothing. I asked him how much I appreciated his honesty and asked how much it would cost; he said no payment was necessary. I spoke with John before taking my VW jetta to him. He is friendly and informative, after talking to him a couple of times I decided to take it to El Monte Transmission because of the reviews that i saw here after some research and they definitely did not disappoint. I didn't have an appointment when I decided to take my vehicle and they told me that they would get to it after they took care of the cars/customers that were there first and I'm ok with that.(its great to know they have a pipeline) to my surprise, in a couple of days John called me and left a message to give him a call. I did as soon as i could and he told me that he had found the issue and that it should be ready the next day if I wanted him to go ahead and fix it, (at this point he told me how much the damage was and I was very happy with the given price under $600) naturally I say: of course go ahead! and I went to pic it up the next day, my car is running great and I would recommend El Monte Transmission for anyone having Transmission problems. read more

I took my Honda Civic to EMT for a bearing noise in a 5 speed manual. I paid $1100 to have all the internal bearings replaced. When I asked him to show me the old bearings he grabbed ONE I asked him if he used HONDA MTF to fill the trans and he said YES When I left the bearing noise was gone.......but my nightmare only began 6 1/2 months later..... (and now out of his warranty) and 7,000 miles later I have now lost 5th gear and have a clicking sound when I turn right or left. I decide to remove the trans myself this time (I am an ASE Master Mechanic with 30+ years experience) I don't usually touch transmissions because of my time, but I was frustrated. So being that this is a simple trans to split open. I found this: GEAR OIL inside the trans, thick and black and only 1/2 a quart !!!! (HONDA MTF is clear and thin) The invoice said he put in 3 QTS, yet HONDA service manual that I left in the car said to use 1.6 QTS of HONDA MTF. There was no leak in the trans or axle seals, so there never was 3 its of anything in there. How can you fuck this up? Next I found that the oiler plastic gutter (used to lubricate the counter shaft bearing and the 5th gear synchro) had been REMOVED and was not there. I took the entire trans to a guy in GLENDALE and he agreed with my findings..... THIS TRANS WAS PUT BACK TOGETHER AND MADE TO FAIL !!!! 1/2 gear oil was enough to keep it quiet but also was destroying the synchro and not lubricating the upper bearings and counter synchros. I paid another $1000 to have this trans repaired correctly and filled with HONDA GENUINE MTF. IF YOU WANT TO GET FUCKED, TAKE IT TO EL MONTE TRANSMISSION !!! read more

I was so happy to have found El Monte Transmission. John is very helpful and honest! I had gone to two other transmission shops and each time was told I needed to rebuild the transmission and it would be between $1800 to $2300. The only reason I was pricing transmissions is because the car failed smog and the codes indicated transmission. I took it to John, he quoted $1495. I left the car and imagine my surprise when he called me and told me the transmission was ok, it just need an electrical problem taken care of. I was so happy and amazed!
