Been coming for several years now so time to update my previous review. Almost nothing has changed. Everything (i.e., food, service, ambience, prices) remains excellent. Two of us shared a single order of the following. The chips were fresh with touch of oil; the pico had a great flavor and kick; the fried plantains are like a dessert appetizer; the guacamole was perfectly balanced; and, the shrimp fajitas were outstanding. We have been coming to El Moro for over 20 years it seems give or take. One of my old dive buddies first took me here when I just started diving just after Y-2K. A few years back while down with the entire family, we reserved a large table to celebrate my 60th birthday. Ray and his dad made the night very special in that they prepared their lobster feast for all of us that was accompanied with all the tasty sides. The cold drinks kept coming and the service was exceptional. Never waited for a thing all night. We view them like family and will always stop in for a few dinners while we are on the island and have been back a few times since our special night. On other occasions we have enjoyed the grouper cooked in a foil pouch with a fantastic sauce and the shrimp dishes are also very good. My recommendation to you is come in hungry before 7pm and plan to leave full and satisfied. Any cabbie will get you there and back very easily. Love El Moro!! read more

Epic food!!! Filete a la Tampiquena- the dish with skirt, steak and two * Molé enchiladas. Absolutely mind blowing! The steak was so juicy. It was unreal and the enchiladas were incredible. The mole is delicious! * Cochinita Pibil is the pork dish in an amazing broth from the Yucatán. SO juicy and the broth is RIQUÍSIMO! The fried Platanos were absolutely delicious! Served with a sour cream and real keen sugar! My friend had a virgin piña colada, and I had one with alcohol, and we both agreed they were the best piña colada's we have ever had. Absolutely recommend this place. Our favorite meal on Cozumel. Our server, one of the family members of the owners, was such a warm and friendly gentleman. He provided recommendations and treated us like family. We got the grilled seafood platter for two which had excellent conch, shrimp, and fish, as well as a fish in papillote dish. My husband, the steak lover, chanced a flank steak and was absolutely floored at how good it was. Nice sear and still amazingly medium rare. Everything was fantastic and we were greeted at the end by a small shot of a anise-flavored liquor to help with digestion. Fabulous meal, 100% would come back. This family owned place is so cute and they make you feel like family! I've been twice - got the asparagus soup both times. It's rich and creamy and comes with fresh, warm, toasty garlic bread. They also bring you chips and the freshest pico I've ever tasted! I've also had both the beef and shrimp fajitas. The beef - and accompanying grilled onion and green peppers - were so delicious, I cleaned my entire plate in one sitting (not my usual MO)! The shrimp I got to go... so it wasn't as fresh but still tasty and they do pack up all the extra fixings for their takeaway orders (sauces and everything!). Definitely worth a stop in! read more

Had a great dinner at El Moro tonight! Big beautiful fresh shrimp gambas (breaded fried shrimp), and fresh fish (sea bass) with shrimp papillote special. The fish and shrimps were light and delicate in a creamy peppers, onions, butter and capers sauce. Very tasty and very filling! Had a couple of very nice margaritas as well. One of the best meals on the island, authentic, delicious and affordable. It was incredible. The service is fantastic! We brought snapper we caught on a fishing trip and they cooked it up and provided sides for $80 pesos. Chicken mole was one of the most unique Mexican dishes we've ever had and it was very tasty. Strong and delicious colada and daiquiris. I'd recommended everyone to come out to El Moro and try their food! Update: We returned with more fish we caught to be cooked. Again, nothing short of perfect. Fresh made pineapple juice was refreshing on a 90 degree day. The pork special was tender and went perfectly with the purple onion pico de Gallo. Pork special, garlic fish, pineapple juice and one sol $19 US dollars. The owner is the sweetest and we will return again to El Moro for future vacations. read more

Hands down the best place I went to on the island. It is family run, and ray makes you feel like your part of it. The drinks were all delicious. The food was the shining star. Truly cannot emphasize, this was the best meal I had on my trip. The shrimp fajitas were so so good. The black beans were so flavorful and shrimp was cooked perfectly. El Moro is a hidden gem, tuck in the middle of Cozumel. The building isn't showy and blends right into the neighborhood. The food quality and service are absolutely fantastic. This restaurant is away from the touristy main drag and crazy prices. I ordered the Beef Fillet Cuban, thanks to other Yelpers' recommendations. It didn't disappoint, especially the fried plantains. Ate here today with my family. Service was incredible, and the food was the best we have had in Cozumel so far. The plantains were my favorite. Apparently this place is legendary and de rigueur for the dive set; so go there to meet your peeps or tell tall tales but not to eat. The food is horrible and the menu stuck in rural Michigan circa 1955. read more

Our taxi driver said this was the best place to eat on the island and it did not disappoint. We had shrimp ceviche and chicken mole. The shrimp was very fresh and flavorful. The mole was the best I've ever had. Such a great chocolate flavor - I've not had that in the states. Kids had some rice, beans, flour tortillas, and a chicken enchilada. They really liked there meal. A few reviews recommended getting the coconut ice cream. Definitely do this. I'm not a huge fan of coconut - but this was excellent. The margarita was a good size and strong. It's located in the middle of a neighborhood and not easy to get to. The taxi driver dropped us off and agreed to pick us up an hour later. Let me first start by saying we rented a car and drove probably like an hour and a half to get here... mainly because we have no sense of directions, had a terrible map, and to be honest were just making it up as we went along.. That being said SO WORTH IT!!!! This place was absolutely fantastic. From inviting service to delicious food - we were extremely pleased and found everything was worth the while. We chose this place due to the great reviews we saw on Yelp and plan on returning immediately on our next trip. El Moro is tucked inside a neighborhood.. or at least it appeared to be because we drove in squares so many times before finding it :) We were invited by a smiling server to sit anywhere we would like and quickly asked for the WiFi password to get our social media on. The menu has about 80 options on it and to be honest, I didn't know what I wanted to try. We started with Dos Equis and a quesadilla. They provided chips and salsa - of course - which were probably some of the best homemade chips we had. I got a chicken entree and my girlfriend got a pork entree. We both were absolutely overjoyed and overwhelmed by how delicious both of them were. If I had to do it again, I would get a steak, beef, or pork option over chicken... but that just because I think there is so much more flavor there. I was not disappointed with what I got though. Afterwards, we declined the homemade coconut ice cream because we ate everything off our plates but looking back at the reviews now I wish we had just gotten it anyways. Our server, who we found out was one of the family was so friendly and inviting. He was also so thankful to us for enjoying the food but really, it was mutually thankful. He gave us a "shot" afterwards - which he told us was meant to sip. From what I got of what he said, it was a white flower and honey nector drink made there. It was native to the island and has a whole mayan story to go with it. It is ultimately supposed to help with digestion. It tasted a bit like black liquorice but it was so nice of him to offer to us and tell us the story behind it. I would highly recommend you visit this place and maybe take a taxi if you aren't good with directions or don't have internet to help you get there. Nothing says "off the beaten path" like a neighborhood restaurante with a table staring across the street into someone's garage, with a scrap car perched out front for parts. Anticipating dessert, wife and I shared the Beef Filet Cuba. Simply outstanding! We then ordered the much ballyhooed coconut ice cream (which did not disappoint) and the waiter brought us a "complimentary" slice of flan. Oh my God! SO good!! I was a little skeptical when out taxi dropped us off because the area was sketchy, but El Moro came highly recommended from friends. What a neat experience! The food was great (grilled garlic shrimp, ceviche, and you HAVE to get the coconut ice cream!). Ray makes your visit truly memorable. He treats each customer as if you're the only one there.
