Mexican food in Indiana sounds like a bad idea so we went anyways. First off the service is epic. Attentive and fast and nice. Can't ask for more than that. Four of us went and all ordered tacos and combos. Everyone seemed to enjoy there food orders and I ordered asada tacos. Three asada tacos with rice and beans. These were nice. Not amazing but I'm from California so I kinda got a thing to say about Mexican food. This is ok not the best but maybe the best in New Albany I don't know. When you're craving tacos, you get tacos! I called in for a carryout order and was told it would be ready in 15 minutes. I arrived about 10 minutes after placing my order and it was already ready. Two of us ordered just taco salad with the ground beef. It was not good at all. Best part was the shell the salad was in. Had way too much refried beans- the ground beef had no seasoning at all. Tasted very bland. Only ate a few bites-wasn't worth even trying to eat. Not sure how you can mess up something so simple as a taco salad. read more

So I'm not here to argue what authentic Mexican food is or it should taste, but I'm here to tell you this place is delicious. I will take this style of Mexican food any day over the options I have in California. The space is huge, staff is friendly and efficient. The food is delicious. Chips and salsa are brought to the table as you're being seated. I ordered a cheese dip, which is what I've been craving. I have been all over the east bay in California trying to find the white melted cheese dip- doesn't exist, so I couldn't wait to have it when I was in town. It came out piping hot and this ooey gooey deliciousness. I had the chicken and rice dish for lunch. The portion had to have been the dinner size because it was huge!! It is rice with perfectly marinated, grilled, juicy chicken pieces with that white melted cheese all over it! It would be appreciated to receive my guacamole when my meal says it comes WITH guacamole, not having to ask when ordering. If you are ordering out or doing curbside, I suggest you look at your order before you allow it to leave the restaurant/parking lot!! This is not the first time!!! If you've been to any of the other El Nopal's in the area, you know what to expect. The food was good and plentiful. I tried the chicken flautas for the first time and was actually impressed with the flavor and spiciness. The rice and beans were par for the course. Everyone else's meals looked appetizing and were complimented. Service was attentive and kept my water filled. The only downside I saw was that the chips seemed thicker than normal and only half carafes of salsa were delivered to the table instead of full ones as I'm used to at El Nopal. The restaurant is clean and well kept. I wouldn't go out of my way to get to this location, but with so few sit-down restaurants in the State Street area, this is certainly a solid option. read more

Terrible service and a total ripoff tonight. Server number 5 is some new idiot that doesn't have a clue what he's doing in any restaurant let alone a Mexican restaurant turned tonight's dinner into a circus and a costly mess for me. Everything was going fine till we ordered dinner. I ordered carnitas with white caso on the side to put on my dinner. Junior brings the caso out immediately. The problem was dinner showed up about 15 minutes after that. The caso had set up firm in the bowl. So I ask Junior if he could bring a fresh order out so I could pour it on my dinner. This goofball takes the caso back in the kitchen and nukes it. He shows back up at the table with blistered up nuked caso, that's not even the best part, before I can even say I don't want that nuked caso he proceeds to pour it all over my dinner like he knows what the hell I wanted it on. I said I wanted it redone, needless to say by the time it arrived everyone else was way past finished. So I ask for a carry out container. I had to take the side of caso to the register and ask for a bowl to put it in. some other goofball grabs the bowl and says he'll take care of it for me. He goes back into the kitchen and comes out with this. Now I'm hungry because I still haven't eaten, I'm so pissed over the experience that I'm popping tums, and I just got my butt reamed for $3.80 for a half order of caso which started off as a small bowl but now is about 2 tablespoons. We generally go here on fridays at least twice a month. I don't care if I ever set foot in the place again after this experience and the worthless lack of a response from the manager. There's way too many Mexican restaurants in this town to get treated this way in this dump. read more

Another visit for lunch. For years we have frequented the El Nopal in Sellersburg and more recently we started visiting the New Albany Plaza location. The New Albany store just seems to us to be a little better than Sellersburg. At El Nopal the fare is pretty much what you would expect at any mid priced Mexican restaurant. Unfortunately due to a recent medical change for my wife, we now have to watch her salt and cholesterol intake closely. You know, one of those things if it taste good you can't have it. However we found with some modifications to some menu offerings, you can enjoy going out occasionally. My wife ordered the chicken salad without the flour shell and no bacon. The protein was grilled chicken. She also used mild salsa as her dressing cutting much of the fat and salt from the meal. She was given a very generous portion of the things she could eat and reported the meal was pretty good. I had the huevos rancheros with beans and rice. My meal is what determined my 3 star rating. While the meal was ok, anyone that's had a proper huevos rancheros knows the eggs should be cooked over easy to no more than over medium. My meal came with the eggs not fried hard, but fried really hard! For the price paid, you can't really complain too much, but I still would like to had a proper huevos rancheros. read more

We love El Nopal, going there for special occasions, and when we crave delicious chips, salsa, and our favorite dishes, which I have a few! We love the combination platters, but I also enjoy the krabmeat chimichanga platter and Monica's Platter (OMG - yum). Their queso is incredible, so we LOVE the dishes with queso. The service is always consistently good, food is delicious, and the overall atmosphere is nice. We will even stop in for chips and salsa to go, and it's just as delicious as if we're sitting at the restaurant. Parking is good, too. Highly recommend!! read more

My daughter and I ate lunch at El Nopal in New Albany, Indiana. There are several of the El Nopal restaurants throughout the Louisville Metro area. If you're incredibly hungry, and there's nowhere else available to eat, El Nopal will do in a pinch. But I wouldn't recommend it if you're wanting authentic Mexican cuisine, or even decent cuisine. The shredded beef in the chimichanga that I had, had a lot of fat chunks in it. The meal altogether was very bland, with little spice or seasoning to flavor it. The rice and refried beans had absolutely no taste at all. A dollop of sour cream and guacamole was put on the plate. And again, the guacamole was pretty much tasteless. The mild salsa tasted like watered down tomato sauce. The salsa that was supposed to be spicier, tasted like the mild salsa. The only difference in taste between the two salsas, was it seemed somebody had thrown in some diced jalapeños into the mild salsa to make it "hot". The queso sauce was also extremely bland. I've eaten here several times for dinner I thought it would stop in for a quick bite for lunch today since it's always so quick at dinner-time .I waited a few minutes before the even acknowledge that I was in the building I was seated and brought chips and salsa atman my server came over and took my order . After a longer than normal wait for my food at arrived andf was not what I ordered . I flagged a bus or down-and told him what was wrong he took it back . After another lengthy wait the server brought my food over looked at me like I had done something wrong and said you wanted chicken Sarcastically . I actually used to love this place. Would seriously pass multiple el nopal locations to specifically come to this location. However I had just been here recently and I always order the same menu item.... Ordered it tonight and it wasn't like what I normally get. Spoke with waitress and she said she couldn't fix it because they would charge her for the item. Asked for manager to come over and he was extremely rude and didn't offer to fix it. Pretty much said that they did no wrong. I was literally rhere 2 days ago and had the exact same thing! :-( I always make it a point to come here when in from out of town because it is my favorite place, however, I won't be returning again. I'm a fan for the value of this place, not the flavor. My sister and I went in last Sunday for lunch. We were each able to get a huge lunch portion of a stuffed Chile Relleno, a beef taco, large portion of beans, and avocado salad for $5.75. In addition, we had a half queso dip for $2.75. They typically have a drink special, and Sunday was no exception. We each had a jumbo margarita for $4.99. They've also been running a coupon on the back of the New Albany Plaza Kroger receipts which took an addition $5.00 off our bill. Although, it's a great value and the food is fast and hot, it could use a little more flavor and fresh texture. The food, service, and drinks are pretty typical to any of the other El Nopal around the Louisville and New Albany area. read more

I have eaten there several times and I always enjoyed my meal. Today I called in a carry out order and was extremely disappointed. I ordered a chicken special nachos and didn't open it until I got home. When i opened It was full of ground beef. I'm not a fan of ground beef so I called to see if I could get the correct order. The person on the phone kept telling me that I ordered the beef and wouldn't listen to me. I finally hung up. I'm not sure if I will go back after this. If you order from them make sure you have them repeat it. Instead of eating something I was looking forward to I got indigestion. read more

It's a shame no stars aren't a choice. Went in and they were semi busy with a dinner crowd. The waiter took a bit to get our drinks and we had to flag our waiter down to take our appetizer and food order. The food was OK at best tonight, (the one in Georgetown is way better) Chicken was rubbery and was sitting under a heat lamp for quite some time. Then when it came time to pay our meal, we went up front (having already done the math to split it three ways and we were told that our waiter didn't add everything up correctly and we owed $20 more. Seriously you tell a customer that your incompetent employee cant do math and you're responsible for the different. We paid the difference after which the cashier couldn't do simple math to tell us the 3-way-split of the new amount. We will never be back and will advise others to do the same. read more

I like this location, a lot. Its not very far from my house at all. The two times we've gone here it wasn't overly packed. They do have a ton of seating so it makes it seem like there are less people than there really is. The service is great! Both times we had great servers and both were really nice to our 4 year old son. I really like that they ask him what he would like instead of looking at us and saying "what would he like" Most places don't do this at all, so its nice when our little guy can order for himself since he likes to be a "big boy". As far as food is concerned, when I go to eat Mexican food I usually always get the same few items. I decided when I went here both times to try something new. I was pleasantly surprised at how tasty some of their items were. It all just seems so fresh and not rushed compared to other places we've been.
