La loma is a Mexican food establishment in the okolona area of Louisville Kentucky located right on busy Preston Highway. I would describe this establishment as kinda a hole in the wall. Waking in I was surprised that it has a large seating area and very cool and nice decor. The okolona area over the years has established a large Latino community and because of this there are all kinds of hidden Mexican establishments that are unknown gems. I was hinted off that la loma was one of them. I grew up in the okolona area and my parents and In laws still live in the area. My kids attend school in the area. So I keep in contact and am still constantly in the area. I've had a few people tell me that la loma has great authentic Mexican food that is very good. They also give the caveat that the service is bad and language barrier will be an issue. So I finally decided to check this place out for myself today after grabbing my daughters from school. We walked in Around 3pm with no wait. They do offer complimentary chips and salsa which is always a good sign. The salsa was very good. Great flavor. I preferred the mild as The spicy was very spicy. The chips to me weren't the greatest. But it's heavy corn tortilla which isn't my personal favorite. But others like that style of chip. The service we got here wasn't as bad as people say. Yes there was a major language barrier but with some good old fashioned finger pointing and made up sign language we got our orders placed and filled correctly. I got a chicken quesadilla with chorizo. Very good. My only complaint is it was loaded with peppers and onions. Which I don't like. So I had to do a bunch of picking. Which made it hard to eat. I will say it was the spiciest quesadilla I've ever eaten. It came with refried beans and Spanish rice. I wasn't a big fan of the beans or rice. They weren't bad. But not on par with other local establishments. My wife got the steak ranchero and it was very good. Very different from other steak rancheros she has had. She stated she would rank it behind popular local chain el nopal steak ranchero but this was totally different tasting so she wouldn't be opposed to coming and trying again. Two of my daughters shared a kids cheeseburger and seemed satisfied. My oldest daughter got a burrito deluxe and liked it. It was also heavy with peppers and onions. She did like it though. Overall I will say this is a legit Mexican food establishment. It lived up to its billing that was explained to me. Worth a shot. I will warn you. If you don't do spicy do not come here. Everything here that me and my family tried was extremely spicy. So we will all be eating tums for dinner. But it was worth it. Good lunch and cool looking place. read more

really unfortunate as i wanted to regular the place as its through the route i travel to louisville. im from miami & can speak spanish so thats no issue, but i may not look the part. however the salsa is essentially water & once you receive food thats it on service. you have to make it a point to pay or get up to ask for more drink if you want more. you'll sit there a long time. fortunately the street is filled with multiple businesses of the same type. i won't be returning but i would advise checking periodically if customers want more drink, or if there's any issue with the meal. i went ahead & tipped a few to not be a horrible person but i didn't really get any service. and i feel terrible as a very privileged woman who loves to tip huge. after reading other reviews it seems my experience is common here. seems service quality is based on demographics. wouldn't recommend for caucasian women. read more

Our son-in-law recommended this place to us as it is next to Barry's Cheesesteak and we drop in there often. Son-in-law lived in Mexico and we are both always on the lookout for authentic Mexican food. Upon entering we found that we were the only Caucasians in the restaurant, and this is a good thing. Our waitress was friendly and spoke perfect english. We had fish tacos which were very fresh, but a little on the plain side, but still good. Here what is missing: When I go into an authentic Mexican restaurant I expect a salsa and pepper bar, there was none. I expect fresh chips, not bagged, they were okay but not fresh. I hope for a mix of south of the boarder drinks and although there was a small bar with interesting mixed drinks coming out I did not see a great selection. It may have been there but not visually. Often these kind of family places have extensive menus and this location did also. however, they need some help from a graphic designer, or they need to fire the one they used. It was the most difficult menu to read I have ever seen, dark busy images behind much of the text for example. The good: My wife always tries Horchata, one of her favorite drinks, they make their own and the spices were clearly not from the local Krogers. It was thinner than she liked but tasted great! They are open for breakfast so we are heading back soon. This was the first place we have seen where we asked for a specific dish from Guatemala and they knew what it was. Every other Mexican or Southwestern joint we have tried in Louisville had no idea what we were talking about. Our waitress went back and talked with the chef for us to see if he could make it, He also knew what we wanted but indicated he did not have all the ingredients at this time! I have high hopes for this place because they seem authentic or at least act like the want to be better. I'm also forgiving for some of the short comings as it appears they are just getting started and do not have a lot of experience yet. If they do well at breakfast I'll update my review. read more

This is probably the worst service I've ever had in my life. Story time! I met some friends here to have a few drinks and a meal after work. When my friend and I walked in no one greeted us, no one was even at the front and it looked deserted. We walked over to the bar where (of course) no one was posted. Two men and one woman were sitting with chips and salsa and a few beers at the bar. We waited about 10 minutes, then my friend walked to the back to ask someone to come to the bar. After another 5 minutes a woman came to the front and asked us what we wanted. I ordered two shots of vodka ($14) and a sugar-free Red Bull, which they informed me they did not have. Instead of making our drinks, the lady walked off and we sat unattended for another 5-10 minutes. When a man came up to the front he finally got us our drinks right before our other friend arrived. As our third person arrived we headed toward the front to again try and get seated. Like the tables in the restaurant, the front of house was empty so we seated ourselves on ripped booth seats bursting with yellow foam. We waited about 10 minutes (again) and then we got up and found someone to take our order. She brought us one menu, so we had to share. When our food came out it was hit or miss. Mine was lacking in portion size and flavor, but my friends said theirs tasted decent although missing key ingredients. Nothing special. The entire meal was spent flagging people down to ask for our menus, silverware, drinks, and check. Not to mention the waitress took my $14 drink when I wasn't even half finished and spilled it on the table. Restaurant workers were all in the back doing something and only came out when it was time for us to pay. Again, worst service I've ever had. Wasted HOURS here just trying to have our orders taken and did not enjoy it at all. Over priced on drinks and most dishes. Not to mention on the way out, our rude waitress was more than happy to attend to a table of men who had just shown up. La Loma's is picky about which customers they give the time of day to and should be avoided at all costs. read more

So it depends on who you ask when it comes to rating this place, my husband loves Mexican food and would give almost any place 5 stars, but i'm not a fan of Mexican food. The only way your going to get me to go to a Mexican restaurant is good salsa and margaritas! The food did seem authentic with corn tortillas and the salsa had pico in it which I love. It also smelled and looked very clean. The waitress was very nice and decently quick with everything we ordered. Literally the best Tacos I have ever had. Authentic and delicious. Under the Tacooos menu get the tripas and the lengua. I'm going to go back and try something from the seafood section. Edited note: This restaurant is running at 25% normal capacity, meaning way less customers than normal. Upon arrival things seemed great. Manager was very nice and we were seated promptly. And then it went downhill. Waited maybe 10 minutes for someone to come take our order. No big deal on that alone. But then we waited. And waited. And waited. After an hour our waitress finally reappeared and told us our food was almost ready. I should mention that during this hour wait, we got no refills, and not one person checked on us. After about another 15 minutes our food came out. First signs seemed good, hot plates and food looked good. Then we ate it. Everything was lukewarm to cold. I had the Enchilada's Racheros, and my guest had three tacos rice and beans. We can only assume that both plates were extremely hot in an attempt to reheat the food before bringing it to us, and that it had sat in the serving window for the time our waitress went on break, or just forgot about us. The food itself was actually just disgusting. The Enchiladas Rancheros were 5 different filled enchiladas (beef, chicken, cheese, bean, and potato). The only one of the five that I could pass as food was the beef. The chicken was dry and tasteless. The bean was lumpy and not smooth like refried beans should be. The cheese wasn't even melted inside the cheese enchilada, just a block of cheese. And the potato...if I could figure out how to describe what that was, it would be a miracle. Of the three tacos, the asada was okay, but barely passable but fell miles short compared to almost every other taco I've ever had (and yes, that includes the Americanized Taco Bell). Didn't get to try the rice, and didn't want to after being told how cold and flavorless it was. And the refried beans on the side were lumpy, cold, and looked as if someone had accidentally dropped a sprinkle of cheese on it. We received mild apologies after complaining about the temperature, wait, and taste. But at least we got a small discount for our troubles Definitely a place to avoid, which is sad considering the food looked to be more towards authentic Mexican cuisine. But you would honestly be more happy with the money spent going to Taco Bell, taking apart the tacos and burritos, and creating a Frankenstein meal from the components. read more

We recently ate at La Loma. My husband got the steak quesadilla with fries. He said it was ok, not fantastic. I tried the shrimp enchiladas in green sauce. I thought it was good but not remarkable. Our waitress did not speak much English and she had trouble taking down our orders. The service was very slow and we had trouble getting our drinks refilled in a timely manner. I had never heard of this place until yesterday, when my husband and I checked it out off the recommendation of his coworker. I expected your standard Mexican fare, same stuff you get anywhere, and at first that is what it looks like. I got a chicken Burrito Diablo- it had a very pleasant, surprising smoky sort of flavor to the sauce- SO much better than your standard place! I couldn't wait to take each next bite. I ate too much. My husband also greatly enjoyed his fajitas- we're definitely going to be back! The one negative- the service is slow, so be patient. They are very friendly and helpful- the waitress had noticed my husband made sure there was no tomato with his fajita, so when he ordered a side of guacamole she made sure to let him know it was made with tomatoes. A manager came and took our drink orders and let us know the sweet tea was being made and kept us updated on how long it would be. That was very considerate, so the wait was pretty painless. If you love Mexican food, do yourself a favor and GO there. read more

The food is delicious! I love the salsa they bring out with chips. We've also tried the bean dip which is cheesy and scrumptious. The fajitas are very good as well, along with the Camarones a la diabla (althought this dish is pretty spicy). Their margaritas are quite good too. How Mexican is La Loma ? We got the last table , we were the only white folks in La Loma . Latinos filled the rest of the restaurant. .Mexican music was playing and every one was having a good time. Many families were there. We were welcomed with hot chips and salsa. The salsa was a mix of great flavors , not the tomato sauce that you get at most places . The waitress spoke English and explained the many different dishes. I saw Mexican dishes I had never seen , but looked delicious. Since Our first visit , we have returned many times to try these dishes . Amazing flavors . You have to experience their food. We typically go to the same Mexican restaurant that is close but tried La Loma instead today. Total win!!the menu has interesting things on it that other places don't. Ice cold negro models on tap. Their salsa is spicy and delicious; not just blended up tomatoes like other Mexican restaurants in town. I had the flautas de pollo and they were the best flautas I have ever eaten. So crispy and fresh, and served with beans and rice that you can tell are freshly made. Also, it's served with fresh avocado slices (not avocado mush!). The refried beans actually have texture instead of just being the paste-y mush that I have had at other places. My boyfriend had the carnitas and said they were they best he had ever eaten. I work very close to this place so I go there often. It's one of the true authentic Mexican restaurants around. This place isn't for people expecting a tex mex meal but it is a place where you can eat TRUE Mexican food. There specialty is seafood, so if you want some awesome fish tacos go here. They usually are fast and are always busy! Sometimes you may wait a while because everything is cooked fresh and made in house, but it's well worth the wait! read more

Thought we would try a new place. Walked in and noticed the brides/marriage channel was on every TV. UK basketball was playing at the time, no biggie, we don't usually watch sports, but found it odd that many of the folks here were dudes drinking beers watching the brides channel. Anyways. Service was pretty quick, took the order, brought the food. The food was okay, at least it wasn't a gooey mess. Found a huge chicken bone in my chimi, the waitress said the manager would be right over. 15 minutes later the manager came by and stated he was going to comp the meal, stood there and talked with us, we walked up and paid, he didn't comp the meal. I just want to hug the waitress every time we eat here. The food makes me so happy! Haven't been able to find a Mexican restaurant this authentic since living in Southern California. This was bad. My family and I went here tonight to watch the second half of the Green Bay vs Cincinnati. We get there and they aren't showing it and a nice worker sat us down and changed a nearby TV to the game. So far things were going well and they continued to be decent when our waiter brought us chips and salsa which were good. However if you can't handle spice don't go because there is no mild option on the chips. Our waiter however was unsatisfactory. She seemed annoyed by our orders and when we asked for the bill. Then it took a very long time and when the food did come it was ridiculous. The food was incredibly small and wasn't satisfying at all. The chicken was bland and was almost like tissue in it's texture. The only saving grace to any of the food was the queso placed on top. My one quesadilla that had barely any queso on it was disgusting. I was still hungry when I finished. They also changed the game at the end of the 3rd Qtr to some TV show that was dependent on sound despite the lack thereof. We went here because it used to be El Torazo but this is just not good.
