Quick service and tasty food. I had about 45 minutes to kill before a rehearsal in the area, and was in need of a meal anyway. I was driving in the general downtown New Albany area, and La Catrina caught my eye. So I parked and went it. I was quickly seated and got the soda I ordered in no time. It was kept topped off and full throughout my whole visit. I was simple and got two tacos...one vegetariano and a campechano (chorizo and steak) naked street taco thing. Both were delicious and absolutely hit the spot. I would love to return again and perhaps get to try a cocktail or two! read more

What a great little place! I ordered two tacos, the Kentuckiana (Crispy chicken, red cabbage, Nashville hot aioli, queso fresco, pico de gallo) and the Los Cabos Fish (Cerveza-battered cod, red cabbage, chipotle aioli, pickled red onion, cilantro). I also got an order of the Sweet Potato Fries (Red jalapeno aioli, cilantro). Everything was very delicious and the vibe is very chill. Taco Week visit to La Catrina for lunch. We've been to a couple of their sister restaurants, but this was our first visit here. We started with the Triple Queso Fundido as an appetizer. It was very good, but we would have liked more Pico de Gallo to mix in. It was still good though. Both of us ordered the Taco Week special which was the Taco Eves Mole tacos $2.50 each minimum order of three. The Tacos were very good and had plenty of the chicken filling. My wife had iced tea and said it was very good. I washed down my tacos with a large draft Negra Modelo ($7). Food was very good and our server Jaylen was excellent. read more

Cute restaurant, boyfriend and i stopped on a road trip, we were very hungry, and we had a long way to go. The quality of the food was not what we expected at all from reading some of the reviews. Chips and salsa were not free like a lot of Mexican restaurants, which is okay, fine. We went ahead and got a tres salsa dish where they have a pico like salsa, red salsa and salsa verde. The chips were not only way overcooked, but also stale and cold. The salsa verde was the best quality and tastes of the salsas but i found it very weird to pair with chips. It was or would be good as a salsa on a taco, but with the stale chips it did not land. Overall the three salsas were fresh, though underwhelming, We talked about it and thought the burritos would be better. It was just overall a weird experience.. his burrito was carne asada and i tried it, thought the meat was on the tougher/chewy side. My burrito featured brisket, which had a very distinct freezer-burnt taste that was semi-covered by the salsa verde. Both burritos were served with thin sliced red cabbage, which i normally would love, but It looked like it had been sliced at least 3 days ago and was fairly dried out and just... really disappointing something so easy was just not done at a pretty basic level of quality. This place could have good food but it was pretty disappointing and overall i don't know how they do it like this. I don't know what food the people who left good reviews are getting. A friend who lives in New Albany recommended we meet up at La Catrina for dinner and drinks. I'm a fan of tacos and tequila cocktails so how could I say no? This fairly open and spacious restaurant filled up quickly within 30 min of the time we arrived (around 5:30) on a weekday. We started out with an appetizer of chips and three salsas. Chips were very fresh and I enjoyed the fresh, bright salsas. Being vegan, there were a handful of other items on the menu that fit my dietary needs. I decided on the Hongos street taco with grilled mushrooms and onions with cilantro and the vegano taco, a blue corn soft taco with soy chunks and guacamole. La Catrina has a self-serve salsa and toppings bar which was excellent! The drink menu was very inventive but also had favorites like margaritas and sangria. I loved my cocktail called What Happens in Tijuana. It was a delicious, fruit drink with rum, passion fruit, and lime. The food, drinks, and service at La Catrina were all excellent. I'll definitely keep them in mind when in New Albany. read more

First time visitor. It's a beautiful Saturday and they have the garage doors open. I assume they're not always open but today it lends to the fun casual vibe. The music is contemporary and loud enough to enjoy but not so loud you have to yell over. I'm not sure I love that they don't offer free chips and salsa. I have to assume there's a good reason. Maybe people have abused the service and then failed to order enough to offset the losses. But their salsa has a really nice flavor. So don't hesitate to order some. The chips are a wee bit thick for the salsa yumminess BUT they're great if you order their nachos. And you SHOULD order their nachos! Haha They call them shareable. -- they aren't kidding. I came in HUNGRY and couldn't even eat half the nachos shareable order. Bring a friend or plan on taking some home because you won't want to leave it behind! My husband & I recently tried La Catrina for the first time & we were not disappointed. We started with a flight of margaritas.... let me just say , "try them ALL!" Then we had tamales from the shareables. I love tamales & this had three: pork, chicken, & vegetable. Then we tried different tacos, none disappointed but our favs (so far) were the Birria & Fuego (spicy). We've been back twice since our first visit & my favorite thing so far is the Catrina bowl which has a great combo of flavors. We are looking forward to trying the brunch menu. I went with a big party of 15 on a Tuesday night and it was only three others tables of small parties. Very slow so this would make a great midweek spot. The food took about 35 minutes to come out and was delicious for the most part, except The refried black beans were very watery, almost like a sauce which was okay for most people at our table but I ordered a vegetarian taco and those beans were barely present but were advertised like the meat alternative and since they were watery, I ate the taco a fork. My taco fell apart before I got a second bite. It wasn't really holding together for the first one either. And they didn't double the corn tortillas which I found odd for such a wet taco. Flavors were bold but I should've tasted it before adding things from the salsa bar. It was a bit much happening once I added sour cream, lime and tomatillo sauce. Also it just looked like melted cheese and topping. The beans were so watery I barely tasted them. The other vegetarian taco featured a deep fried avocado... it was a half of an avocado left as one piece and deep fried and placed in the center with some pickled onions and sauce. Flavors were amazing! But it was very difficult to eat... I'd recommend cutting the avocado into smaller more consumable pieces before frying for a better taco experience. It was terrible plating but good flavors. The nachos were great and made a good entree if you decided to sub it. It's a huge portion and with it! The elote (corn) was a star! I'd come back for the corn everyday! Most people ordered the Cali chicken burrito with the Chipotle crema on the side. I did not like that chipotle crema at all and it came on my sweet potato fries as a drizzle !! It was thick, sour, and felt heavy on the tongue. It felt like a chipotle mayo and was just kind of weird in the fries for me. It wasn't spicy either it was just not something I'd have to have ever again. And it was a heavy drizzle. I used the limes to thin out the flavor and it was tolerable. The fries were cooked to perfection! I'd just recommend that sauce on the side. I usually love sauces and all salsas but it was not the one for me. read more

Had a nice dinner last night at La Catrina. Very cute place! Decent prices for the menu. We started with an appetizer sampler; chips with salsa, queso and guacamole. It wasn't giant but nicely sized with good presentation. Forgot to take a pic of this. The queso was very good and the guacamole was excellent! I had a barbacoa quesadilla and a Birria taco. The quesadilla was small and the server warned me ahead of time so I was able to add the taco. The Birria taco was delicious, served in purple (blue?) corn tortillas. Flavorful and well dressed with just enough of what it needed. That barbacoa quesadilla though! Sooooo good! Juicy meat, stayed hot the whole time eating it. I could have had 5 of those, lol. My friend had the El Hombre taco and a Birria taco too. She was equally pleased with her meal. Service was good and pleasant. read more

Pretty cool taqueria! Decorated all Day of the Dead! Really interesting menu-- absolutely nothing reminiscent of all the other "Mexican" spots around town! This is truly a taco bar. We came in for Louisville Taco week. My husband had the special tacos- Kentuckiana and said they were very good. I had the Carnitas taco and a Los Cabo's fish taco. Both were delicious, although I subbed the habanero salsa for a chipotle one. It sounded too spicy for me! The salsa and chips brought to the table were good- standard chips, but the salsa was fire! Peppery and flavorful- not your typical tomato sauce in a bottle. I ordered the La Catrina margarita as it was $4 off tonight. It was really really good! Well balanced and Patron! A bargain for $5. Service was a little lacking- not bad, but not attentive and her slowness kept me from ordering a second drink and the churros which sounded really good. We will definitely be back! Hours on Yelp says closes at 9, but taco week says 10 so idk if this needs to be updated for summer or what. read more

First time to visit La Catrino's in New Albany tonight, and what a delightful experience. We joined our party a little late so their drinks arrived early. The mojito selection was outstanding, I choice the strawberry version..no complaints here. The menu stretches from street tacos to in house entrees. We had a party of five and there were no complaints. I ordered a salad that used brisket as protein, it was terrific. Not sure what everyone else had, but no plate returned to the kitchen full. The decor is over the top outstanding The restroom was clean The server was spot on The drinks are real We will definitely add this establishment to our regular go to! Great experience read more

I cannot understand how this place is rated 4 stars. From the start, the woman that seated us had a scowl on her face, as she held up two fingers, I said yes there will be two of us. She grabbed two menus and began walking toward a table. She placed the menus on the table and walked away without a word. On a positive note, the waitress was very friendly and efficient. The food was a major disappointment. I had a side of poblano rice and 3 tacos: beef, chicken, and pork. I honestly could not tell the difference in the taste between the three. The meat was boiled, tasteless and likely several days old. The rice was overcooked and mushy. My wife had a Cali chicken burrito and the meat was the same. It had no flavor and was obviously not fresh. We will not be returning. read more

It was my first time here and they are definitely doing the social distancing thing correctly. The chips are so light and crispy. Perfect! I had a norteno taco with beef brisket, refried beans, roasted tomatillo crema, pickled red onion and cilantro. Delicious!! Highly recommend trying this tasty taco. The food was average, the margarita I got tasted like syrup! There was little to no tequila present. But really disappointed me was I was charged extra miscellaneous fees! When I receive my bill my $9 margarita was on there and underneath was an extra charge $4.99. I asked my server what the charge was for and she said it was because I ordered a grande margarita and got flavor. When I looked at the menu there was no option to choose different size margaritas, only one standard size, and the flavors were not an additional charge.. it was straight $9. I showed the server the menu and she said she ddnt know why that was just how it rang up on the computer! I asked to speak to a supervisor, she left and came back with a new check stating that she changed it because the supervisor didn't feel like dealing with the situation! When I looked at the new bill there was a $3 miscellaneous charge. I asked the server again about this addl charge and she said it was because I got a chicken burrito instead on steak!!!! Now I must look like a clown because everybody knows that beef cost more than chicken! Plus both the chicken and beef burritos were $12.75! At this point I demand a supervisor and she tells me no because the supervisor is busy doing payroll and doesn't have time! I wanted to go off but remained cool because at this point the server was trying to insult my intelligence! Obviously this restaurant needs to nickle and dime and scam their customers out of Pennie's hoping that they won't look at their bills!The sad part is that I tip really well and had she not tried to pull one over on me she would have received way more than a little measly $3! read more

We are big fans of both locations of La Catrina Mexican Kitchen - the one in New Albany and the one in Jeffersonville. The tacos are delicious; I have tried most of them - Birria, Alambre, Tinga, Baja, Carnitas - and they never disappoint. This time, I tried the Los Cabos with crispy fish and it was delicious. My husband likes the burritos, particularly the Cali burrito with grilled chicken. Guacamole and chips is our favorite starter and the Elotes (small corn cob) is a good side. You can't go wrong, no matter what you order. The decor in both restaurants, much of which is a "Day of the Dead" theme, is colorful and fun. I really like the patterned ceramic tile on the front and sides of the bar at the New Albany location - so pretty! Service is always friendly and efficient. Both locations of La Catrina are great places for a fun night out! read more

I've heard about this place for a while but don't spend much time across the river. Indiana has some cool spots though, so you may see me hanging around here more! I came on a Tuesday evening around 6:30. Parking is easy to find here. So many free parallel spots! They weren't all that busy, so I got seated right away. It's a cute place! Outside and inside seating. Very colorful decor. And lots of natural light! I ordered queso and chips for the table. Yum! There a nice kick to it but it was fantastic! We ordered margaritas. I got la catrina while my friend got la sabrosa with a mango flavor. Here's was more of a purée type drink while mine was more of your typical marg. They were fantastic and refreshing! I ordered 3 tacos: la catrina (shrimp, bacon, queso, pickled onions, jalapeño aioli, cilantro), los Cabos fish (battered cod, red cabbage, chipotle aioli, cilantro, pickled onions), and dona nena (potato, chorizo, refried beans, corn, poblano, avocado, queso). My friend also got the la catrina taco along with a build your own quesadilla which had steak in it. She loved all of it! They were a bit pricey as each taco cost almost $5 per. But they were worth it! All tasty and I loved the mixture of ingredients. I will add that if you're pescatarian, this is a great place for you. It's not so friendly for vegetarians as there was only one vegetarian taco option. Still, you can build your own tacos and quesadillas which will give you the option to create what you like if you don't see something you're keen on! We also shared churros. Yum! They were crunchy and absolutely amazing with the chocolate sauce and the whipped cream. Not overly sweet at all! Our server was fantastic! She checked up on us a lot and was all smiles. She had some good recommendations of her favorites off the menu too. I'd love to come back again!! read more

My husband and I came here on a Saturday around 6 PM. We didn't have a reservation (not sure if they take them) and were pleased to be seated immediately at a table near the bar. The restaurant has a cool design. It's a fully open space. All of the staff members were very friendly and polite. My husband got the Oaxacan cocktail ($9) which was very good - it tasted a bit smoky. He got the Catalina bowl (basically a burrito bowl, $12) with brisket meat and I got the chicken tortilla soup ($11). I usually like a tomato/red broth base to my tortilla soup but this soup was obviously made so fresh that I still really enjoyed it. A few notes that may matter to people: it was very very loud (at least on a Saturday night) and chips aren't complimentary. read more

La Catrina is bold from the word go! The bright, artistic murals inside and out aren't afraid of color or vividness and the food (mostly) follows in the same vein. We sat out on the sidewalk where they have several 4-seat tables beneath a black awning to shade you from the relentless sun. It is a little tight out there, but comfortable. Inside, the open floor plan and spacious bar would be excellent options as well, but it was just too nice on our visit to pass up dining al fresco. The music was an added bonus. Rather than playing the traditional Ranchera music that you'll hear at almost every restaurant specializing in Mexican fare, the choice to play more modern, Latin pop and dance gives La Catrina a more updated feel that compliments the selection of street food really nicely. Our server was excellent and attentive, making sure that I always had water and bringing out our meals quickly. The chips and 3 salsas was about $5 (not complimentary, but worth the order) and had a delicious, homemade taste and texture. I probably could have just eaten these for a meal. We each ordered 2 tacos, including probably the best fish taco that I've had in the area. The flavors were very forward and they aren't afraid of spice in the kitchen! I liked it, but it can be a bit much for some. The tacos aren't very large, think small black corn tortillas, but between the appetizer and the two tacos, I didn't leave hungry. At ~$4-5 each, the tacos aren't cheap, but these are clearly higher quality ingredients and they taste great! read more

We made our way to New Albany from across the river to try this interesting Mexican restaurant. From the other YELP reviews, it looked like mainly specialty tacos which is what we tried. There were also a variety of appetizers, salads, etc. It was a great menu bit not like you are used to seeing. No burritos, enchiladas, etc. We tried several but my favorite was a beer battered shrimp taco. Really quite awesome! They have a nice selection. I've never gone inside, but I've picked up several times. The prices are definitely higher than I WANT to pay, but obviously the food is good enough to make it worth it because I keep coming back time and time again. La Catrina is my favorite Latin cuisine in New Albany. I'm usually pretty lazy after work, so the curbside pickup is a godsend really. I have never had anything here that I didn't like. Some of the tacos were a bit too spicy for me, but I should've known better when I saw serranos were involved LOL, I just can't take the heat like I could when I was younger. I would LOVE to actually go in sometime and see what they have to offer by way of adult beverages. I looooove a spicy marg with a tajin rim. Service during pickup has always been very fast and friendly. I highly recommend this place and will be back again and again and again...and again. read more

Allergen alert: though I made it clear that our take out order could not have any dairy. When picking up the order, I checked with two staff members that this detail was followed. I was assured it was. When I opened the contents at our Christmas party, the black beans had cheese over the top of them. Too late for this party to run back, I called and spoke with the management. She offered to give me complimentary black beans next time I came in. The food itself, what we could eat, was good this the 3 stars. Their ordering system is not up-to-date: our family taco meal said it came with chips but did not. There was a slight hiccup when we were first seated in the patio area and no one approached our table until the group of waiters/waitresses noticed we hadn't been greeted yet, but our server, Sandra, recovered quickly and energetically. She had a great personality and was super quick, attentive, and genuinely friendly and engaging. The food and service more than made up for the initial wait. The restaurant is nice and open and we loved the patio on a mild May Saturday so I highly recommend sitting outside! Our food was absolutely delicious with super fresh ingredients and unique flavors you can't just find anywhere. My husband liked the fuego a touch better than his birria taco. My chicken taco was my fav. The chicken was perfectly cooked and marinated. The dessert, however, was my hands down favorite of the meal. We loved EVERYTHING, though. Our bill was about $45 for HUGE appetizer, 4 tacos, beer flight, tea and 2 desserts (so amazing we got an order to go!!) I highly highly recommend this place and please leave room for the churros because they are to die for (he doesn't even like sweets and they were so good we ordered some to take home). A quick summary of this 3-star rating: atmosphere was bright, clean, inviting, but EXTREMELY hot. We sat inside & had all the kids at the table with wet hair sticking to their faces, everyone was sweating, and I regretted wearing makeup. It felt like there was no air circulation inside on a 90 degree day. Food was very good - tacos were small as expected but flavorful, fresh, and all the meats were of high quality and cooked well. The triple queso was fabulous; thick, large portion, and delicious - it was $10 for a queso dip, but this was actually the stand out item that we ordered. Everything seemed a bit too expensive? Our tab was $49 for 4 small tacos (2 chicken, 1 steak, 1 salmon), the queso, and 2 margaritas... someone please help me rationalize this. It was $57 total after tip, which left a bad taste in my mouth for what little we got. Not sure that we'll return here considering the prices vs. portions; could definitely have a more indulgent, fulfilling meal at the Exchange for $57 if you're in this area. read more
