Just came back from Santa Fe, reminiscing about New Mexico cuisine, but after my meal at El Nopal, I no longer have to wait for incredible Southwestern/Mexican food. They have seriously upped their game! The carnitas quesadilla was as good as any I've ever had, and the entire menu looks like it has been elevated. A lot of new, more gourmet Mexican restaurants have opened in St. Louis lately, bringing great food and higher prices to match. But now I don't have to spend more to get that same level of quality. Saturday night, open tables, lots of folks walking around but service "not so good"! Ordered a margarita asked what the house tequila was "Montezuma" oh my cheap, nasty tequila that I got sick during college days drinking! Asked for premium and was told it was expensive, well $28 for a Herradura silver w Grand Marnier was awfully expensive, they did put plenty (too much) tequila in. Attentive, friendly service. I met up with someone from a dating app, and the place was packed to the walls on a Friday night, but he says he likes this place and he comes here a lot and I can see why. I had a steak quesadilla which was very good, and he had the birria tacos. The food took a while to come out, because they had lots of families in there tonight, but our server took our orders very quickly, she kept our drinks full and made us feel very welcomed. As this location is in a strip mall, the parking lot can be congested. I was in the mood for margaritas and a quick bite, and with this being the closest mexican restaurant, I came here. Service was great, and the music was a vibe. I ordered a pitcher of strawberry margarita. Taste just fine, and I felt it was priced right. It was about $24 and shared between 2 people. I think we both got 3 pours out of it. Chips and salsa taste good. I ordered the Speedy Gonzalez during lunch. You get 1 taco, 1 enchilada, and 1 side. I had a beef taco and shredded chicken enchilada with beans. Deep in conversation, I forgot to take a picture. I'm not a fan of the food. It's very bland to me. There are not enough spices in the meat for me. The green sauce, I believe Verde, was good. I guess there are not enough spices in the meat. I would come back for the drinks only. read more

My only complaint is that I have to deprive myself of it because their in house dining can be very slow as they are typically very busy and understaffed so make sure you have PLENTY of time to spare and aren't really hungry because the chips and salsa won't be enough to tide you over. What a spot! I've been a bi-weekly regular at this family-owned joint for years and hope to for years to come. The decorations are colorful and cozy the drinks are always incredible. The cups and quest are a great way to start the meal and I always get the Texas Fajitas with fresh jalapeños. The wait staff is attentive and friendly with my kids and the woman who owns the restaurant is usually around helping tables and making sure your meal is perfect. Biggest disappointment I've had in a long time going out to eat. Drinks were good, but then we waited an hour 15 min for food. I saw a cockroach crawling on the wall. This has to be one of the best "traditional/stereotypical" Mexican restaurants in town - at least for dine in eating. Their salsa has just a bit more to it, the carnitas pork is tender and moist, the Spanish rice is crispy & not mushy, etc. It seems like all the dishes were just that much better than I've had elsewhere. Tried this restaurant for the 1st time for a late lunch (dine-in) on the Saturday after Thanksgiving. The section we were seated in was half full, but there was another empty section. Our order was taken in a reasonable amount of time, then came warm chips & salsa -- one saucer per person which was nice. Entrees (Texas fajita and Pollo Tapatio came out first, then Burrito fajita, Quesadilla Rellena) took longer than at other Mexican restaurants where we go for late lunch (when it's not very busy). Fajitas came out without tortillas; I had to ask when the 2nd pair of entrees were brought out. Requested no sour cream, no refried beans with fajita; asked for extra rice & guacamole instead -- upcharged for guacamole. Quesadilla was small -- like a taco tortilla size instead of burritos tortilla size that we get elsewhere. I think we'll stick with the other Mexican restaurants we've been going to. read more

I am done with L Nepal, they simply do not have any ability to accurately tell you when your food will be ready. Just tonight it cost me $30 for soggy food because they told me my order would be ready in 35 minutes and then called me 15 minutes after I placed my order to tell me it was ready.
