We continue to be about monthly at El Troquero although it is now more of a drive for us. We include it on our Sunday lunch rotation along with San Jose, El Maguey and El Salto. I always enjoy a Sunday brunch of very good Huevos Rancheros with the standard red ranchero sauce or with their tart salsa verde. I also like the huevos con chorizo for a change. Their salsa is a little boring, but I always like it with some El Yucateco added for some habanero flavor and heat. Ms T is always going to have some gringa ground beef tacos, but that is what she likes. We enjoy going to remain regulars. It's nice to see that they have become participants in AAdvantage dining. My family and I received very poor service from this establishment. We went on a Saturday afternoon after making a reservation with google. When we arrived to the restaurant there was only 1 other family and 1 gentleman who arrived shortly after us. The waiter seemed very inpatient, perhaps it was the end of his shift and we arrived. The menu consisted of a large variety of entrees which takes time to look over since we have never dined in here. I opted to get the "margarita special" which tasted like medicine. I requested to have a top shelf margarita instead and the waiter was irritated and asked if I didn't want this. I stated no, I can't drink it because it tasted like medicine. When it came time to place my order I asked for the steak & shrimp nachos which I was told they didn't sell that. I pointed to the picture that I found online where several customers had purchased it. He walked away then came back to tell me how much it will cost. I stated ok.... During the taking of our order, he would randomly step away without stating that he was. Fst forward the food came out. My nachos looked nothing like the picture. No onion, bell peppers or any other toppings. I asked about it. And he came back with a side of toppings. The bill came and I realized that I was still charged for the margarita and I didn't drink. The glass was still sitting there with only two sips missing from it. At this time another waiter had taken over. He asked if I didn't want it, I told him that I didn't because it tasted like medicine. I don't understand why would they even try to sell that to someone and charge me for it despite me telling them that I cannot drink it . Took a while for him to remove it and return to the table. Despite the poor service, I decided to leave a tip that would have covered the cost of the margarita. To be honest, they didn't even deserve that. They seemed bothered to served. Will not return. Most tortilla soups are loaded with tomato and chili flavor. El Troquero's had neither. It was more like a cheesy chicken noodle soup with chips substituted for noodles. Bell peppers were used instead of jalapeños. However, some pepper sauce doused on top and mixed in added a bit of heat. I was just as surprised by the generous pieces of chicken. Was an entire chicken breast included?Fresh avocados chunked on top added tastiness. This is our local Mexican restaurant with a great menu that uses excellent ingredients and doesn't mess them up! The service is professional and competent,,,, very fast service even when very busy! On occasion we had to use carry out and have been able to pick up 15+ meals beautifully packed in 35 minutes of placing our order!!! The salsa is "family friendly" (mild) and they have hot sauce on the table so you can turn up the heat as you desire. They have a large menu. Ask the servers which dishes they recommend. Some of our favorites are the chicken fajitas, pork tacos, chicken enchiladas and the homemade soups! Like the salsa, the soup broths are mild but flavorful. They serve tobacco peppers, chopped onion, cilantro and lime on the side so you can dress the soup to your taste. The portions are generous and the food comes out fast and hot. The servers are attentive and efficient. The restaurant is always clean and the atmosphere is casual. We never feel rushed at the end of our meal. El Troquero is located in the Schnuck's Hilltown Plaza. There is always ample parking. They have a few tables outside, a bar, and lots of TVs so you don't have to miss the game! The food was ok. Carne Asada was actually really good. The three bites of it I had in my Chimichanga that was the smallest burrito I think I've ever seen in my life. And it wasn't cheap! I don't mind paying for food. But if you're going to charge 15 something for a deep fried burrito with rice and beans don't do it with a 10" tortilla! Really. How utterly disappointing. To be fair the frijoles were pretty good. I would have given them up for a 6" long skinny burrito. Oh well. I hope someone reads this before they go.... Somewhere else. This is a good solid Mexican restaurant choice. The wife and I ordered takeout (covid and all) which was ready and hot when we arrived at the prescribed time. She got the grilled chicken chimichanga (served with rice, beans, guacasalad, sour cream, tomato slice, topped with cheese dip). A standard dish, but well executed. Generously filled with tender chicken that the wife said was quite tasty. Cheese dip was relatively lightly applied - I prefer mine to be a little cheesier, but that's a personal preference. Sides all seemed to be fresh. I went for the Torta Mexicana (Mexican sandwich with grilled steak, mayo, lettuce, tomatoes, onions, queso fresco, avocado, beans, and pickled jalapenos). This was really good. The steak was tender and well flavored with whatever sauce/spices it had been grilled in. Mayo was light so that it didn't overpower. Queso fresco isn't a heavy flavor, but was thick enough so that when it was bit into you could actually taste it. Pickled jalapenos were more for flavor, without any real heat - which I was glad for. I like flavor, but not pain. We ordered a side of chips & salsa, since the online ordering didn't indicate if it came with what is normally complimentary when dining in a Mexican restaurant. But we were pleasantly surprised to see that our order contained both our side order and a complementary order. I just wish that they had included more than one small container of the (stereotypical but still good bottle) salsa per order. You really needed at least two containers for each of the bags of chips. read more

One Star is too high fo El Troquero ...first visit and definitely our last! 'Wanted to have a Mexican dinner for Cinco de Mayo. Arrived around 5:00, asked to be seated and was told that it'd be 30 minutes to an hour ... an hour came 'n went - no table. So we asked to place to place a Carry-Out order ... a simple order: just two entrees from the menu. 'Encountered a language barrier with the the server, so we pointed on the menu to what we wanted. 'Watched people come-in, be seated, get their food and leave. Still no carry-out order for us. Asked about our order, and was told that they were "very busy" Finally, after about 45 minutes, our order showed-up, we paid (about $40) and left. Got home, emptied the bag AND our order was wrong. Angry now, I took the wrong order back, and was told that I should have checked before I left, so it was our fault. Asked for and was denied a refund, by a gentleman who said that he was "in-charge" Finally, they replaced our order (after 45 minutes more); and when we got home and opened the containers, it looked like 2-day old Taco Bell leftovers. If there's a worse Mexican restaurant in West St. Louis County, I'd be shocked. El Troquero should be avoided at all-costs ... even if they send you a coupon for free All-You-Can-Eat and free drinks. Terrible (or no) service; rude employees; high prices and food that looks like it was scraped off the inside of a garage can. Our go to Mexican restaurant in Chesterfield. It is a family run operation, and the service reflects people who really care about the customer and the food is excellent. My favorite dishes here are the various fajita plates. The seafood/shrimp in excellent, as is the vegetarian. With fajitas and all the trimmings it is difficult to go away hungry. The other items such as tacos, enchiladas etc are also excellent. The atmosphere is great, and this is suitable for individuals, couples and familiarize. One thing I especially appreciate is their willingness to modify items for dietary reasons. They make my fajitas with no salt added, and substituted rice and beans with a dinner salad. Food is always good, but service is very odd. You'll be sat then not see a waiter for a long period of time, no matter the busyness. Ambiance is perfect, they certainly stick to a theme. As far as pricing, this really really turns me away from them. Arroz Con Pollo for $20 is insane. The portion isn't huge, and it isn't the best chicken cheese and rice i've ever had by any means. We've been twice and last time I was the only person to eat. We got a dr. pepper, water, chips, salsa, small margarita (lime) and a Arroz Con Pollo and I payed upwards of $50 including a 15% tip. That's insane. Their food isn't as good as they think to be charging this way and I certainly won't be back. It's a shame because if the price was lowered reasonably this would be the go-to mexican for me. read more

I just had to get used to this lovely Mexican restaurant. I didn't order any more huge burritos, but I tried their shrimp quesadilla and that is a superior experience. The fresh, crisp, sweet shrimp is saute'd to perfection and served on one tortilla, with a queso sauce that is so perfect! Served with rice, lettuce and a slice of tomato, it is not a ginormous plate of food but just right. I wish they would chop the tomato, but I don't really care because this meal is SO good! I have also sampled enchiladas and tacos and find their food fresh, freshly prepared and really yummy. They take pride in their food and service and are clearly pleased when anyone comes in! Some of the BEST Authentic Mexican cuisine I have ever had! My fiancé got the Burrito Colorado and the steak inside had amazing flavor was nice and tender. I ordered the El Toreado and was very pleased at how fresh and yummy the ingredients were!
