Food- I ordered a chimichanga and I got a flower tortilla wrapped with shrimp.It was not deep fried at all, even though our waitress said that it was being deep fried.That's why it was coming out late. I ate here with a group of friends and it was a pretty solid experience. I ordered the pollo Cancun and the portion size was generous (for a single dish). There's plenty of food and it was very filling. The chicken was not bad, my main issue is that it was a bit too salty which kind of took away from the overall flavour. What we ordered: - Pollo Michoacano (4/5) with fajita veggies: Most places call this Chori Pollo and it's been my go to dish lately at Midwestern style Mexican food joints like this one. Good portions of food, fresh and moist chicken with tasty chorizo and veggies. Cheese sauce adds some great richness. Beans and rice were average. - chicken Enchiladas Verdes (3.25/5): Okay. Would be better if the chicken was mixed in with some sauce and spices. Pretty much shredded chicken wrapped up in a tortilla covers with green sauce. Nothing special. Ordered beans on the side. - chips and salsa (3.5/5): decent, very mild salsa. Wished they left a bottle or bigger bowl on the table. Chips didn't seem too warm. What is there to say about EM. It's a typical American Mexican restaurant, you won't find a whole lot on the menu that you don't find elsewhere at 75% of the other restaurants. The food has always been good, the service has always been great. And it seems to be a cut above the other EM locations, most especially the one on Kingshighway. If you are used to that one this one will be a happy change. The only thing I do not like is that they charge to use a credit card. In today's times and wish how business works it is the business's responsibility to incur the charges when a credit card is used, that's part of the deal of being a business. And they don't tell you, they just mark it down on your bill and you have to read the whole thing to know about it, it's not front and center as you check to see if your food prices are correct. So one star deducted because I think that's a major thing. Oh, and the salsa is practically the perfect type I like. It's the runny non-chunky type with a tiny tiny bit of spice. read more

El Maguey is one of the best Mexican restaurants in the St. Louis area. I've been there many times. My favorite dish is the fajitas del mar, or the fajitas with fish. I always order that every time I go. I don't personally know anyone who works there but I personally feel I get all the service that's needed during my visits. read more

This restaurant is absolutely horrific. Our food was completely wrong. There was a worker that stood by our table the whole time and it was really creepy. He had an earring in his right ear. The worst part was I was with a group of females and when we left he stared at their butts and made them super uncomfortable. He should be fired. I got the steak fajitas and it was tender and delicious. The meat could use more seasoning so I asked for limes and it made a big difference. Surprisingly the bell peppers were still a little crunchy is how I like them. The fajitas meat was cut into very small pieces and I had to work at it to find all of the pieces (please don't do this in the future). We were greeted nicely when we walked in and was immediately taken to a booth. We had an amazing waiter, Cirilo. He was on top of things through the whole service plus he has a friendly personality and a good sense of humor. The restaurant has an outdoor patio which was full plus a full bar and a colorful indoor dining area. The restaurant is in a strip mall so there's plenty of parking. The chips had a strange flavor to them that I have never encountered in a Mexican Restaurant, and I'm from Southern California, so I've eaten in many, The "salsa" to dip them in seemed move like plain tomato sauce. We have been frequented El Maguey in Chesterfield Valley for a few years. I like to get their Huevos Mexicanos and Huevos Rancheros. We go there if we are on business in the Valley, but they are not open on Sunday. So, we decided to try the on Manchester at Baxter because they are open on Sunday and I like to have a Mexican egg brunch. They do a nice job on both above-mentioned dishes, Huevos Rancheros and Huevos Mexicanos. This is just what I want for Sunday brunch. The red sauce is typical with a little oregano. They are served piping hot, and the platter is full with the three eggs. I also like that they don't leave the eggs raw as some places do, with uncooked white. They make good refritos and rice. These are probably the only things I will order here except I will try the fish tacos or a fish platter. I am just not needing the big Mexican meals anymore. Apparently, the El Maguey name is a marketing connection, but the restaurants do not feature identical menus. There are differences both in what is offered and how it is prepared. As is so often true, you have to find what you like. I like their huevos. This, along with El Troquero at Hilltown, Chesterfield are our Sunday places. read more

It's been a few years since I visited an El Maguey and I'm sad to say this location did not live up to the memories of the city locations I visited. Service was extremely slow. Service was just okay...server came and brought drinks and then disappeared for what seemed like forever before he took our order. Food came and I was VERY disappointed. Food was very bland. The ground beef in my dish was unseasoned and tasteless. The taco shells looked like they just went to dierbergs next door and bought some cold El Paso shells...not good! The tamale did not look or taste freshly made that day...sort of looked like it was frozen and then reheated. Yuck! The food has always been delicious the few times I have been! I'm not a huge fan of the seating as it is a bit squished into not a very big convenient place and when it's busy it feels very crowded. We went for a birthday dinner once when I was about 8 months pregnant and I was barely able to fit into the seat because everything is so close together. I had a big belly but it would be nice to have an option to move away from the table so I could sit comfortably but there isn't much room to. What happened El Maguey? I came here Friday night at about 8:15pm and my experience was sub-par on every level. While waiting for my friend to arrive, I had a brief wait to be seated of about 5 minutes. No big deal. The place was nearly full but I was seated at a booth towards the back kitchen with the wobbliest table ever. Still, my friend and I thought that we could make it work. That was not the case. After receiving our drinks and STALE complimentary chips and salsa, we asked our waiter, Poncho, if we could move to a different table because our table was too wobbly. there were two tables directly in front of our booth so we didn't think that it would be a problem, figuring that it was still in his section. He forcefully pushed the table to the wall then said "what do you want to eat?" No apology, graciousness, acknowledgement of our request, or FRIENDLINESS whatsoever. It was awkward, but we gave him our meal orders. I ordered the Enchiladas Supremas, which is one of my usual dishes that I get here and the flavor was off. It seemed rushed and thrown together. The sauce tasted bad and didn't top the enchiladas. It was a different flavor than normally on that dish here, which I didn't like, but I was starving so I still ate it. My friend ordered a combination plate with a chimichanga and a tamale on the side. She said that she found scrap pieces of lettuce on her dish although it was not enough to actually be a part of the dish. It seemed as though the cooks thought it was the entree version of the chimi and put the lettuce on there, but then removed it because it was the combo platter, which doesn't come with veggie toppings for some reason. She also said that her tamale was cold. While we were eating, Poncho started vigorously sweeping the floor near us. He hit the back of my foot with the broom while sweeping under the booth behind us! I commented and he apologized, but seriously what is that?! And again, it's like 9/9:15 at this point, no where near closing time. While still eating, we were given our check and Poncho came back about 2 minutes later expecting us to have them ready. He then stood there waiting. I looked at him like he was crazy because I clearly needed more time. It was apparent that he was in a rush to leave, even though the restaurant wasn't closed yet. My time at this restaurant has typically been pleasant in the past, but this time around was a complete mess! The place without telling me charged a 3% charge for using my credit card. Yes they did have a small notice on the door but who would see that? I feel if the company is gonna go against how any other restaurant operates they should give the disclaimer when you sit down or when you offer payment.
