The interior design was impressive and tasteful. The food was very sauce heavy with minimal choices for vegetarian or gluten free diners. The menu made very clear that they do not offer substitutions. I hate cheese sauce so that automatically eliminated about half the menu. Nothing exciting or unique on the menu but my meal was tasteful. The margarita was delicious and incredibly priced. The wait staff was attentive and I couldn't believe how fast our food arrived!! I loved everything about this place except for the food. There's a huge parking lot, and upon entering the restaurant, I was greeted right away by a friendly host. He brought my friend and I to our booth. I was instantly impressed by the clean, modern, and trendy look of the restaurant. It's super cute in there, and I absolutely love all the little details they've included throughout the restaurant's design. The women's restroom was nice and clean, which is always appreciated. Our server was very friendly and attentive. Everything we ordered came out quickly. They have a happy hour deal where their large margaritas are $10, so I ordered classic lime. My friend had a raspberry marg and wasn't super impressed, so she ordered lime for her second round. Not the best margaritas I've ever had, but not the worst either. The complimentary chips and salsa was average. My friend ordered some queso, and it was pretty runny. They don't allow substitutions for anything on their menu, which is a bit inconvenient. For our meals, I had a burrito bowl with shredded chicken. It was a tiny portion, but I couldn't even finish it because it was like flavorless soup. It was pretty much just runny beans, shredded chicken, and some shredded lettuce. My friend had tacos that looked much better. read more

Knowing any Spanish would have been a little of a convenience at this restaurant.. typical complimentary chips and salsa chips were rather stiff and thick but so was the salsa unlike some of the previous comments... I asked the waiter if they had a fish specialty or a bone-in fish and he said yes and pointed at something on the menu and I said "bone in? He said yas.. i said "okay" this is what came out definitely not bone in, definitely not a specialty, definitely NOT a filling dinner...... Wifey had the Fajitas Carretas, which is her norm at ALL Mexican restaurants..... and what she got was half the size of all other Mexican restaurants, guessnits the location. Higher class clientele, higher prices, lower portions. I forgot what taco trio our gueat had but it was equally some food truck street taco plate. No joke our dinner felt like what shoulda been a lunch meal for a dieter. I wish i could say something nice about yheplace, like the drinks were on point, or service top notch, but we don't drink outside of home and well the language barrier was huge here. Stopped by during Cinco de Mayo for lunch. Chips and salsa had hit the table before I got back from washing my hands. Salsa had good flavor, and the chips were thin, but not too thin to break apart when getting salsa. I chose Pollo Fundido as my entrée. It came with beans and rice. The entrée was a super thin piece of chicken breast, with sautéed onions, and green peppers, all covered in cheese sauce. It also came with 3 four tortillas. read more

Ever been somewhere and then upon first bite think "oh no"? Well I had that here. Walking in the ambiance was nice, generally clean and appeared to have a good established clientele. Upon being seated I was immediately given chips and salsa and greeted by a waiter. Knowing what I wanted I didn't even bother with the menu and ordered carne asada and a coke. First, the chips were great but the salsa was bland. Not only was there no spice (fine with me I'm a spice wimp) but there was no flavor. I found myself hunting for the few chunks of onion to have a taste of something other than tomato. The carne asada came out on a sizzle plate. I have never in my life seen this, but to each their own. The meat was very fatty and heavily salted. So much so I tried to put lime on it to tame the salt. The beans, plain. The guacamole, not only scarce (a tablespoon at best) but it too was plain. The only thing on that table that had seasoning was the steak and it was too much. They didn't ask what kind of tortillas I wanted and just brought flour. If ever there was a default it should be corn. All in all...disappointing. read more

Dined her on Valentines Friday! It was a full house but we were immediately seated when we arrived. Our waiter was good but face paced! He wouldn't slow down when stopping at our table. Literally had to tell HEY to get him to stop! Service was efficient and the food was well seasoned. This place is completely unassuming located in a strip mall just off 270 in Creve Couer. The space is modern with beautiful artwork. Our server was friendly and prompt with orders and delivering food. I definitely recommend the guacamole. Had the perfect texture and consistency. I went with the Aztec chicken for my meal. My only complaint was that I could have used a little more of everything on my plate. The rice and beans were seasoned perfectly. The chicken with diced veggies made for a hearty dinner. This place was pretty good! It was off in a plaza so I'd never noticed it prior to now but I was glad that we stopped in! The customer service was pretty good and the food came out really fast. The ambiance was kind of like a family style restaurant, mostly booths and a few large party tables. Those margaritas were some of the best I've had but they were really tasty. The Pollo Hawaiian was amazing and cooked to perfection. The steak fries were just ok for us, the potatoes really lacked seasoning/taste. The tacos were a bit dry and didn't have much taste. Tried for 1st time and found it a "solid" choice overall; note 2 callouts for me - FYI menu says no "substitutions", and surprisingly me some adult drinks (premium margarita specific) was more expensive than my entrees. Overall, solid 3.5+ for me as I've enjoyed many Mexican restaurants, so it's personal taste. Expect to pay $12-18pp for an entree. Nice place to gather with family or friends; expect a short wait during busy meal hours. THE highlight for me was their Queso Fundido, baked/melted Chihuahua cheese topped with Chorizo, served with chips or tortillas - if you love gooey, warm melted cheese and chorizo, this could be a meal!! Also tried their "chunky" Guacamole. Plenty to share and tasty, but light on Avocado chunks in my opinion; seemed to be more onions and tomatoes in my serving but still flavorful and freshly made. Next time I may try the regular smooth Guacamole to compare. For entrees, tried the Carnitas dinner, Chicken Enchiladas dinner and a side Chile Relleno. All very good, served hot (quickly) from the kitchen, and decent portions. Carnitas was tender and a filling meal. Very nice restaurant with amazingly fast and attentive service. It seems very popular and was busy but they move people in and out quickly.

I've heard lots of good things about Carreta's, so I thought I'd check it out. Right away I noticed that the interior of the restaurant is gorgeous and aesthetically pleasing. There is beautiful art work on the walls and there's a pop of red color throughout the interior. The booths at the restaurant felt taller than usual, which was great for conversations and blocking out noise from other groups. Service was great as well! In addition to the chips / salsa, we ordered the queso and hot salsa to start out. Both were great and the hot salsa definitely had quite the kick to it. For my entree, I ordered the fajitas and enjoyed it. The seasoning was on point and I had plenty leftover to take home. I'm looking forward to coming back here and trying more menu items! read more

Thanksgiving Eve, I brought a group of 6 for dinner. The atmosphere was upscale and unique, not campy. We were quickly accommodated. Chips were salty and crunchy and salsa was simple. Service was lightening fast. We all had our meals in under 8 minutes. Everyone's was plates nicely. Not running together. I had a fresh crisp salad with chicken, steak and shrimp. It hit the spot. All the others enjoyed traditional Mexican food and there were no complaints. Portions were ample but not quite overwhelming. Square dishes added to the appeal of the food. Went by for takeout while in town for business, and boy was I not disappointed! I didn't order ahead and my food was in my hands 5 minutes later. I had the build your own dinner with tamale and enchilada, beans and rice. The portions are very generous, and so I have dinner for tomorrow all set. I came here early in the afternoon on Sunday because I was craving some Mexican food. Surprisingly, there was no wait and I was sat immediately. Upon first walking in, you can't help but notice all the beautiful paintings on the wall and how clean the restaurant is. Once I was seated, I was promptly given water, salsa, and chips. The chips were durable, fresh, and paired really well with the salsa. The salsa had just the right amount of spice where it wasn't overwhelming but was enough to notice (which was perfect) for me. After looking over the menu, I opted for the Carretas fajitas, which was a mix of shrimp, chicken and beef. I chose to stick with water because I wasn't in the mood for a margarita. With most fajitas, I always decline the onions (they upset my stomach), beans (obv reason), and sour cream. Usually I'll still get a bit of guacamole in the salad that comes with it but to my surprise, I didn't get any! I was pretty shocked bc I always look forward to it so I won't have to order any additional. Despite the minor disappointment, I still ate everything, which was really good! My food was so good I gobbled it up like a troll before taking a photo! I got the Pollo Azteca. It was packed with chicken and veggies and the queso was pure perfection. (I'm picky about my queso, and this one checked all my boxes) The thing that took this to five stars was my margarita. I was there for a late lunch/early dinner . Service was excellent . The restaurant has a high class ambiance with portraits and chandeliers throughout . We were a party of 3, and each of us got our own bowl of salsa with the basket of chips. No worries about anyone "double dipping". I had the chicken enchiladas verde, and they were very very good. The carne asada tacos looked good, and the tortillas appeared to be homemade. I will be going back soon, as the menu is very extensive, and I really enjoyed the food.
