And the margaritas are always great. The staff is friendly and efficient, and they have several folks that speak English when out limited Spanish isn't enough. We definitely think it's worth a stop and recommend giving it a try.

La Candela -- just a block or so down a side street -- was the answer. It was an absolutely excellent lunch (specialty dishes of seafood and of breaded stuffed chicken). The service was terrific, and the atmosphere, even on a warm day, was very pleasant, with a breeze through the open window and a grotto looking onto the street -- seaside Mexico at its finest. One diner's food arrived incredibly hot, and the waiter very entertainingly pretended to be about to blast it with a fire extinguisher (he did not -- the diner, a solo traveler reading a book, was very amused, and her food looked great). I'm not in Cozumel as often as I used to be, but if/when I am, this is where I'll be going (and I'll have to try the tacos, which I'm told are even better than the grilled chicken and fish entrees.... and also try the breakfast).

I had the mole enchiladas and my wife got the carne asada, and we had the fun coqueta, which is basically a margarita. Pancho's real stand out are its marimba players. We were the only diners at 6 on a Saturday night (presumably post-cruise crowds) but the marimba players gave us, essentially, an hour long private concert. This absolutely thrilled my one-year old son, who could not stop dancing. The marimba players even invited him behind the board and let him hold one of their mallets (which my son tried to steal. He's got a lot of his mama in him). So yes, the food and atmosphere are really good. But it's the supremely friendly staff who made our experience great--and certainly the highlight of the trip for my son.

San Miguel de Cozumel is admittedly not the most beautiful or interesting Mexican city to do touristy stuff in, so it was a treat to find some great regional cuisine to try. I was with a group, so we ordered the Molcajete (basically, mixed grilled meats in a stew), ceviche, and cochinita (stewed pulled pork), along with tortillas. All of it was great. The sauces, from the salsa to the stew broths to the ceviche sauce, were all terrific. There was mention that they dishes were spicy, but in the end, none of the stuff was super-spicy. Furthermore, the spicy stuff was often a salsa served on the side, or a whole roasted pepper that wasn't integrated into the dish, so you could calibrate your spiciness to your taste. The menu is cutesy in that the food and drinks are named after crew positions on a cruise ship. I ordered some chips and guacamole but was not very impressed. The guacamole was literally ground avocados only. I was rather disappointed. My friends were complaining about how watered down their drinks were. It took forever to get our drinks. It also took forever to get and pay for our bill. The only saving grace for this place is the views of the water but that goes so far, even with a couple of drinks. This bar is convenient if you are staying at Hotel Barracuda.

Today the server asked us first before she even said hello, are you here for vacation. We said yes. Maybe she thought we were cruise ship passengers and didn't know any better. Were not, we grabbed up our bags and left. We won't be back. We refuse to patronize businesses who try and rip off tourists. It's unfortunate but there are plenty of other bars in Cozumel.
