Our second dinner in Playa del Carmen, we already knew we'd be sitting outside and sweating profusely despite their outdoor fans. They also had a DJ playing extremely loud music. While I liked the choice of music, I felt like I had to scream in order for my friends to hear me. They offer menus in both Spanish and English, which was definitely convenient. We ordered a few drinks, some apps, entrees and dessert. My drinks were pretty good, but extremely watered down - barely tasted any alcohol. The grilled corn was delicious, definitely recommend it. The chicken dish I ordered was an embarrassment - the chicken was waaay too gummy. My friends, on the other hand, ordered some salmon dish and it was really good. The dessert hit the spot too. Overall, a hit and miss kind of place. But our male server seemed to have an issue with me. Every time I spoke, he pretty much ignored me but had no problem speaking at length to my male friends. We just got the Al pastor tacos! It was very good and was a large portion of meat -- maybe ask for extra onions and pineapple. The service was great especially because we sat down 10 minutes before closing! The ambiance was also very nice but again closing time so not super busy! read more

We went to Trujillos because it had been highly recommended to my family. The place is actually really cool with a large bar area in the center, low lights, and a disco ball! I ordered an Al Pastor flatbread to share and I was a bit disappointed by it. It came out cold and the flatbread isn't really like a flatbread consistency, at least not like ones I've had before. My brother ordered the pechugon and said the chicken lacked flavor. His order was supposed to come with asparagus but they ran out, so our server was kind enough to offer us an alternative (grilled squash with some chimichuri sauce, which was pretty good). My mother ordered the salmon and she said it was delicious, so it could've just been the meal I chose that wasn't that great. Overall, I may need to try something else to give it a better rating. read more

It didn't take long for us to be seated, but it took awhile for our server to come take drink and food orders. Once we ordered drinks and food, it kind of took awhile to receive everything. The food was okay, but not worth the price in my opinion. I ordered a margarita and it was very strong to the point it was unbearable to drink. It wasn't my ideal margarita. Overall, we had a decent time here and the icing on the cake was a man coming around selling roses and my friend bought me some! That was the highlight of the night. Fantastic food and good service!! You're basically eating in a jungle here with some beautiful big trees and excellent music. Don't skip the roasted veggies- I turned the leftovers into my lunch the next day. The guacamole is deliciously unique- served on a crunchy pork rind. We visit playa del Carmen once a year and this was our first time trying Trujilos, we will definitely be back! The food and drinks were great, especially the chicharron that's served with the fresh guacamole! It's in a great location near the downtown area. Most of the restaurant is completely outside. It feels like you're dining in the jungle. No need to worry about bugs, the staff creates a smoke substance and walks it around the restaurant which keeps the bugs away. Highly recommendable place that is "a unique space with a magical atmosphere that will make your feel like you are in the depths of mother nature", according to the website. That's especially true, if you sit on the perimeter, lined with palm trees. My original review is missing from 2 yrs ago, but looking at the menu, we got four appetizers rather than entrees. I only recognized The Elote Dulce Chamuscado a la Leña, Embarrón de Mayonesa y Chilito de la Casa is as good as it is ununderstandable. We call it maize. We also got Palomitas De Coliflor. Coliflor Frita, Aderezo de Siracha, which, according to my botches attempts at Google Translate is either fried cauliflower with hot sauce or fried horse with a side of serious. read more

Overall this is a great 5 star restaurant near the bottom of 38th, amidst a cluster of pretty good restaurants serving all different genres of food. As you approach the bottom of the calle you will certainly hear the ambiance as you get closer to the venue, standing out from the crowded street you'll know you found the right location. As soon as you approach you will know this is no ordinary restaurant. We sat at the table, but I was disappointed we didn't sit at the bar. It seemed like that's where all the fun was being had. Plus, we did have to wait on drinks a few times so I was getting jealous of the patrons who had a bartender at hand. All the food is light and fresh. The guacamole and chicharrones was one of my favorite meals, very fresh guacamole, and it was a combo I haven't had before. The short rib was also excellent, served tasty and hot. Of course I had to have the octopus, maybe one of the best on the playa. It had just the right tenderness and smoky flavor. I also liked that it was served with a healthy serving of fresh vegetables: carrots, potatoes, zucchini, and a side salad with lots of cabbage. Overall it makes a nice light and healthy dinner, good ambiance and music, and I like the decor. You don't leave feeling "stuffed" but you're not hungry either. Came across Trujillos on the way to Quinta Avenida from our resort and saw how all the tables were occupied so we decided to make a reservation for dinner there the next day through their website. What we got: El Caribeno Camarones Peñasco Rib Eye Flintstone Pulpo a Las Brasas Brownie de Chocolate Abuelita The camarones penasco was a bit doughy but tasted great. It's more of a tapas style place than individual dishes for each person so I'd recommend coming here with a larger group and ordering more things. And it's not just drinks, the food is TOP NOTCH. we ordered the rock shrimp tempura and we were blown away by the amazing flavor profile. We thought we forgot a credit card here and the staff were all super helpful even though it ended up being somewhere else. Cesar the front of house manager, Carlos our server, and Alex the bar manager were all amazingly helpful and made sure we had the best experience we possibly could. I SOOO wanted this place to be exceptional. Got let down quite a bit. Came with a group of eight for dinner with a reservation. We were seated promptly at a cool table away from the bar. Great vibe, great atmosphere. Service wasn't bad, not super attentive, but that's OK we can adapt. Our waiter mentioned when we ordered our entrées that things were served "family style". We didn't pay too much attention to that at the time. Apparently family style means that things will arrive at your table when they are finished, or when the kitchen feels like making them. We had one dish (Salmon; does not take too much to prepare.) that took over an hour to appear at the table, long after everyone else was finished. I actually believe that dish was forgotten entirely until we inquired about it. To be fair, we did not pay for that after a gentle complaint. If you are a twosome, or maybe foursome, I would give this place a shot. The food is very good, and the location and atmosphere are very nice. If you have a larger group, I really cannot recommend this to you. read more
