So El Paraiso has some pretty rough reviews on here. And I can possibly see why but believe me when I say that it isn't all bad. I'll try to give it a fair shake. So I ate dinner there last night with a friend and it was just fine. The place was basically dead which was A-OK by me. There was only one server working but we never got stuck waiting long and he was super friendly. I think my biggest complaint was that the chips appear to be store bought and weren't that good. They have a salsa bar and it's decent but you can find better ones around town if you try. I liked the salsas but none of them really grabbed me. The food was decent. I had the Chili Colorado and was very pleased with the taste, portion size and price. The beer was also cheap and cold. $1.95 for a pint of Dos Equis? Yes please! All in all it was a positive dining experience. I won't go running back but it's on my radar now and I definitely won't avoid it. read more

Bad food and worse service. The woman was rude and clearly did not want my buisness. I sat and waited for about 15mins to just get a water and a menu. Then she brought me chips and salsa and I ordered right away. Apparently since I only ordered a bean burrito she said I would have to pay for the chips which seemed weird but I said ok. Then after she brought me a scaulding hot plate (that she didn't warn me about) I burnt my hand ....ugh. I was about to eat my burrito and asked for some more chips. She said I would have to pay extra money on top of the additional upcharge for the first round of chips. At this point I set down my fork and didn't even take a bite of the soggy looking burrito. After reading the reviews I was skeptical but pleasantly surprised! The prices are great and the staff was very nice. They have a small salsa bar and being out a really good basic salsa to the table. I had a great experience tonight, I've been wanting to try this cute little place in west Asheville and tonight was the night. We started off with cheese dip which is only 2.99 it was great, it had a nice consistency and that pepper flavor some restaurants lack. I had the fajita taco salad and didn't receive any weird looks or questions when I said no meat, they knew exactly what I wanted. Our wonderful waiter kept our drinks full and checked on us frequently asked how we were doing. Overall I had a great experience and will be coming back. read more

Be sure to park, go eat, and come right back out to you car and leave or your car will be towed. We went to have lunch and walked through a market next door before going in. 15 minutes and our car was gone. Yeah, they aren't mind readers, but we also met 4 other folks getting their cars back from the same impound lot who had parked in the lot. Maybe i got lucky, but the doom and gloom reviews that kept me from trying this place over a month ago did not represent my experience at all today. I just came for lunch, and got a great plate of Huevos Mexicanos for $6! I was sat immediately, the service was friendly (the lady was a bit cold, but the guy was super nice), the food came out quickly, The chips were obviously free, I did not burn myself, the place is clean, and my car was not towed. Went here this weekend with friends and it's the worst Mexican food I've ever had. The cheese in the quesadilla was rubbery and the sauce from the burrito saturated everything on the plate. My husband's chicken quesadilla was only filled about halfway and very thinly. The waitress asked us just once when she delivered the food how things were so we hadn't had a chance to realize how bad it was. We had to go and find her to get our check and when we went to pay and I told her about the poor food she became extremely defensive. I wasn't asking for a refund or to not pay but she assumed I was and kept telling me how everyone else says "always fresh" well nothing I or the other 3 in my party had was fresh. I will NEVER go back here to eat and will recommend no one else go here either. read more

What we wanted was a good and inexpensive margarita when we went to el paraiso, cheap(ish) mexican food is pretty much all the same but I figured we could atleast get a decent margarita. For $15.50 for a pitcher (half filled with ice) our margaritas were weak and watery and even the waiter (after we had ordered and received our pitcher) agreed that the house margarita "sucked". The food was all right, nothing terribly wrong, yet nothing spectacular. I'm not sure of better places in west asheville, I just moved here, but I am certain they exist. read more

Great location. We had an issue with substitutions. I tried getting them to switch a beef enchilada with a chicken one...they wanted to charge an additional $1. So I got them to give me a bean enchilada instead. Almost any substitution costs $1. To have to haggle with the waiter is not a good first impression. A warm, friendly & casual family-run restaurant, it's never disappointed. It's a go to: inexpensive, fast, quality & has some unique dishes to typical Mexi-American fare. This used to be my regular spot to visit in West Asheville on Saturdays, not to mention to have birthday dinners with friends in the area, and business dinners with our theater groups, but one Saturday I parked my friends' truck in the back of their lot to wait for them to open and went to the yard sale next door, really looking forward to my lunch treat. They had my vehicle towed, even after I came and told the tow guy I was a customer. He hitched it up in front of me, cussed me out, and charged me 160$ to come to an empty field in the middle of nowhere, alone with a lot of money (I had to borrow from friends) to get my truck out. They are plainly running a scam with this guy. Don't eat there, don't park there. I will never go back and neither will anyone I know after that. read more

** DO NOT EAT HERE ** I ate lunch here today, and the meat in the burrito was spoiled. When I complained to the waitress she said "Oh no we use authentic mexican spices, you just aren't used to them." I was speechless for a bit, then I asked to see the manager. The waitress rolled her eyes and walked off. When the manager lady cam she said "What"? I could not believe this was actually happening. I nicely told her that the burrito tastes really bad because I believe the meat is spoiled. She started speaking to me with a very loud voice in Spanish and I have no idea what she was saying to me. I just sat there speechless again. I asked her what she said to me and she said "Nothing". At this point all the other customers were watching. I stood up and said to the manager lady that I was leaving, and I will not be paying for the spoiled meat lunch and I got water to drink. I wanted the other customers to hear that my lunch had spoiled meat in it.
