Unassuming and casual "hole in the wall" that serves authentic Mexican cuisine. When searching the area, I found many popular Mexican spots that clearly weren't the real deal. I can't stand unauthentic, bland tacos. Thankfully, Taquería Muñoz provides delicious Mexican delicacies in a warm, homey environment. The staff are all kind and work hard to ensure customers are satisfied. Structure wise, I suggest signs be posted to say where the trash cans are. If you're sitting near the order area, you may not notice them. As a result, many customers left their trash at the tables for staff or upcoming customers to clean. I personally loved the sides bar to pick and choose the amount of salsas, cilantro, onions, and other toppings you want. I ordered a chicken tamale with 3 tacos- carnitas, al pastor, and pollo. Of course, the pastor was my favorite- I just wish pineapple slices were included. The pollo wasn't bad, but I wish it had more flavor as it tasted basic to me. The carnitas were not bad. Honestly, the salsas and fresh toppings really made it for me. The tamale was just okay, but with all the fixings and salsa verde specifically it was great. Their agua frescas come in HUGE portions. I got a peach agua fresca which was very sugary yet tasted like fresh peach purée. Overall, decent agua fresca. I just wish the pineapple one was available when I was there. A legit hole in the wall authentic Mexican taqueria. Prices are great ($8 for a delicious large chicken quesadilla with a salad, $12 for a platillo of pastor with rice and beans and 4 house made tortillas). It helps to speak and understand a bit of Spanish, but the guy at the window talking our order quickly caught on that Spanish was not my first language and switched to English. He was very kind and I did not feel out of place. You order and pay at a window inside and then the cooks call your number when the food is done. They forgot my quesadilla but it was done 5 min later. Then you go and get the accompaniments - pickled veggies, salsa verde and roja, cilantro, pico. All very fresh. We ate there. It was hot- no ac- but tables were clean and guy taking orders lowered the window shade without asking so sun wasn't baking on me. I was really excited for the new location to open as it's right by my work. After trying a few different things now I'm just excited to drive right past it. Even for Asheville, it's really bland. I'm sure the locals will be thrilled with it, but having lived next to Mexico for fifteen years I can't even avoid being homesick with a decent taco, burrito, or tamale which is super basic Mexican food. Tacos blow out before you can finish them, the pork was just chopped chunks of dry pork, those weak tortillas tasted like they were half flour. This is actually the best restaurant in Asheville. Here's why: The food: My partner and I moved here from San Francisco. We ate La Taqueria burritos once a week, on average. We were worried in moving to Asheville we wouldn't find a suitable replacement. We were wrong. Taqueria Munoz is really, really good. Our go to was the cabeza burrito without rice. The lingua and pollo are also good. Personally, I'd skip the steak. I'm not going to put it up there with some of the other famous Mission spots, but these are not disappointing. I also really loved the birria they serve on weekends. The vibe: It's not a place you're going to want to go for a date or anything other than a casual sit-down. That said, there's this certain sort of magic in the air here. Everyone always seems super happy - staff and customers alike. I've never been able to put my finger on it (it's probably just the food), but suffice it to say I have a lot of affection for everyone every time I walk in. Also, to correct a point from a previous review: You don't need to know Spanish to place or get your order. The price: This is the key third component. Asheville has a ton of great restaurants. But price wise it always feels like you're paying big city prices for 'Wow that was better than expected' but not 'Wow that blew me away food.' You know what I'm talking about if you've eaten in Asheville: you're happy but also a little bit peeved you just dropped $100 for two people. We visited this establishment at noon on a Friday. First of all, you better know a hint of Spanish if you want your order, because they do not call your number out in English. So if you do not know the basic numbers in Spanish, you may never get your food. There's your first piece of advice. Lol. It took about 20 minutes to get our food, so if you are starving, I wouldn't advise going during lunch hour. Now, if you love authentic Mexican food, this is the place for you. I ordered a pastor quesadilla and my husband ordered a chicken tamale and 2 pastor tacos. He, being a lover of authentic food, tore his food up and loved every bite, including mine. Lol. This is one of our favorite authentic taco shops in the area. It's not your bougie taco shop like white duck or Taco Billy's but they know how to make an absolutely outstanding authentic taco. Their tamales are great and they have a unique variety of Mexican sodas. Make sure you touch up on your Spanish because they often call your order number in Spanish and I wasn't ready for that.
