3.5 stars overall. During my visit, El Paso Mexican Grill had excellent service and OK food. Please see my attached photos for the menu in February 2024. When my husband and I entered the restaurant, an employee immediately greeted us and seated us in a clean booth. Soon, our waiter arrived, gave us menus, and took our order. He brought out our beverages, appetizer, and entrees very quickly. Throughout our meal, he and two other employees repeatedly checked in with us and gave us drink refills. At the end, we paid our bill at the cash register near the front door. Please note that this restaurant adds a 3.5% fee to non-cash payments. Here are our ratings for our foods: Cheese dip with tortilla chips - 4 stars - The cheese was gooey, and it and the chips tasted good. 2 Amigos Quesadilla - 3 stars - One quesadilla was filled with shrimp, and the other was filled with imitation crab. On the side were lettuce, pico de gallo, guacamole, and sour cream. I enjoyed the shrimp (4 stars) more than the crab (2 stars). Mixed fajita - 3.5 stars - My husband ate this entree. The flour tortillas contained beef, chicken, onions, and green peppers. On the side were lettuce, guacamole, sour cream, pico de gallo, beans, and Mexican rice. Service was so speedy and super polite! This location is huge. The corn tortillas in my mini taco sampler were fresh and delicious. The Hawaiian burrito is a decadent new item. Delicious. The size small frozen margarita (seen in my photos) was standard and yummy. The ambiance was big, bright, and colorful, lots of interesting glass chandelier and Dia de los muertos style portrait paintings hung around the room. They have a private parking lot. read more

Surprisingly good Mexican fare. Pros: passed the two golden rules for Mexican restaurants: good chips and salsa and refried beans. Huevos Rancheros were not overcooked, staff were very attentive and solid. Place was busy, the local lunch crowd likes this place. Clean restrooms. Cons: standard, chain restaurant menu, like I have seen a dozen times elsewhere. $4 for a Pepsi is Disney-level gouging. Summary: Not what I expected from a West Virginia interstate exit restaurant. I have a high bar for Mexican restaurants, and this place exceeded it with room to spare. Came here with a friend and her family for dinner and I was blown away by how great it was. The chori pollo was delicious and ample, and the unlimited chips and salsa were great as well. The service was stellar and our server kept our drinks full for the duration of the meal (very important when dealing with any spicy food!). The ambiance/music was nice and definitely provided the authenticity that makes a trip to a Mexican restaurant worthwhile. I would undoubtedly come back here in the future. Very busy in a Saturday night, which is good news for a small business during COVID. However, there were some issues - we ordered takeout and had to go to the restaurant to order because they were not answering the phone (reason? Too busy). The original estimate of 10 minutes ended up being closer to 25 minutes, even though they were aware that we were waiting. More concerning, however, was that the restaurant was crowded with no guest wearing masks when walking around and no social distancing. Was very anxious about my own safety. After all that, the food was good - well prepared and fresh and very generous servings. If only the order and pick up process wasn't so anxiety producing. read more

My wife and I have been coming here regularly since they opened. El Paso never fails. The menu is extensive and the food is well prepared and authentic. Not just authentic for Wheeling but great authentic Mexican. The staff is real friendly and make your dining experience enjoyable. This is our go to place for treating visiting friends and family. In this time of COVID El Paso is doing a great job of assuring proper social distancing and all the staff are wearing masks and properly, no chin warmers. I never had an issue at the El Paso at the old location, and I know they just opened up at this location. I think that the can't hire the larger crowd. We waited 65 min for our food after ordering and then left without it ever arriving. Our waiter only came over once to give us another basket of chips and not once offering drink refills. If he would have said, we are running behind, your food will be out soon or something - but nothing. And it's not like our order was complicated- a burrito and enchiladas. Unless you are going for drinks and plan to sit a few hours, I would go elsewhere for your Mexican fix. read more

El paso Mexican grill is located in the highland's, close to Cabella's. I went to El paso grill for lunch and had the beef enchilada's. The sauces were very flavorful and the enchiladas came with a generous helping of rice and salad. They were also accommodating to one person in our party that needed a gluten free entrée. I really didn't know what to expect but I heard good things about this place so I had to try. The décor and music are authentic Mexican, you wouldn't know you were in Wheeling. read more

I was suprised to find this resaurant out here in the sticks. ;) No seriously, none of the stores existed before Cabela's opened. Who woulda thunk... ;) In reality, the is a pretty good restaurant! The chips are better than I've had anywhere. And the salsa they serve with them is pretty decent too. And if you don't like it the way it comes, there are two bottles of taco sauce on the table that you can spice it up with. For my dinner, I had the basics; two beef burritos with sides of rice and beans. All were very good. If I had to pick a nit, it would be that the portion sizes were a little smaller than what I'm used to. But the folks were friendly and they had a fair number of honest-to-god Mexicans working which is more than I can say for a lot of other Mexican restaurants. A good meal! read more

Heard good things about this place so we decided to check it out for lunch! My party was promptly seated and our orders taken within 10 minutes. The complimentary salsa and chips were delicious. I ordered the Adobe chicken, which came with copious amounts of peppers and onions. The house cheese sauce was fantastic. The rice and beans, however, were a little lacking in flavor. I read the rest of the reviews prior to posting this one. I may chalk this up as being in there on a bad night, the place was 2/3 crowded... Please before going on, read some of my other reviews, I believe I've only provided one other review that was negative. I'm a easy going diner who likes neighborhood joints. I realize I'm in Wheeling, so my expectations shouldn't be too high.... Just average. If they were average I would give them 4-5 stars just because of the geographical location. Nothing in this place is authentic. The salsa is bland and not at all spicy. I asked for the homemade hot stuff that EVERY other restaurant has in the back. They had to whip this up on the spot. It was truly horrendous. The chips were stale. The salsa was just bad. I ordered steak ranchero. WOW. How can you mess a steak? Well, it was a t bone smothered in the bland sauce. Well, it may have been a t bone, but I would've fed it to my dog. It was well, well, well done. and tasted completely OLD. I stomached it and go the heck out. The rice was 1/2 cooked. The beans 'paste' was a joke. Okay, let's get to the help. Utterly and completely unprofessional. The kitchen help is watching the game at the bar enjoying a soda. The guy who brought me the chips and salsa threw them on the table. Zero manners. My waiter.... Well, he clearly did not want to be there. At first I ordered a coke. The second drink was an Iced tea. HUH ! No, coke. He told me that I ordered an Iced tea. I looked at him like, really man? Then, they were yelling to each other across the restaurant to each when they needed something. (This is over the other patrons' heads) I was like, incredible... Then I watched my waiter seat a family of three.. he sauntered them through the restaurant then they went to the front far right table.. My man, stopped 3/4 there and handed the menus to the patron and turned his back. They didn't even make to the table. He would talk to other patrons and mid-stream turn his back... I was shocked. Hence the reason I stomached the piece of leather and got the heck out. Let me just say, there are a few other MUCH better Mexican restaurants that are DEFINITELY worth the extra 10 minute drive, even if it's just not to put up with the un-professionalism of the wait staff.
