As much as I like place today was a huge disappointment. My brother and I drive an hour in traffic to get here. We arrived at 4:30pm on Yelp and posted outside sign states it closes at 4:45. When we arrived it was closed!!! I saw someone inside knocked and knocked, he ignored us. We called to leave a message and he picked up the phone and stated saying that they were closed. Huge disappointment after driving an hour. Poor customer service, will not be coming back here anymore. I've been a loyal customer for 25 years. I would take all my family and friends there, it use to be the greatest place to get ceviche. I had read all the not so great reviews of how the ceviche had changed... I was reluctant to believe them so I recently made a trip, and to my major disappointment the ceviche and customer service was NOT the same. The ceviche de pesacado had no flavor, it was missing all the rich seasoning and flavor it use to have. I am not sure who took over now or what family member is overseeing the operations of this place but it is JUST NOT the same. I was also disappointed that they weren't as welcoming as before. It wasn't a busy day, I'm not sure what's going on but it has changed and I'm not liking the flavor nor the service. It was blocky, tough and it tasted fishy (wish it never did before). The ceviche before was succulent, more fatty , and less frozen tasting. Super disappointed they changed the quality of the fish. Seafood no matter what cuisine (Chinese, Mexican, Korean, American, etc.) will always be high on my list, where as with other people, they could do without. Which to them I say, thank you for making it possible for me to consume more of them! My friend Jimmy and I decided to eat here prior to the Dodger game joined by my our friends Yuni and Walter. We all agreed that the portions were quite generous and enjoyed every minute of our meal. If you're driving too fast on Gage, you will easily miss this place as it's tucked in to the side of the plaza where it's located. The lines might get long, but the staff sure know how to send their patrons off their merry way or those eating at the restaurant, the food arrived quickly. That's a good sign when a place gets busy or packed, that the staff is properly prepared to handle such "rushes". We ordered the following, added a fresh avocado, and their homemade tostadas (flat tortillas) A mixed seafood cocktail, served warm, with shrimp, octopus, and conch. I've been a victim of a lot of places serving rubbery octopus and conch, but these were firm and easy to eat (fresh seafood). I was just surprised it was warm, but wow, still delicious. Freshly made fish Ceviche made with Alaskan Pollack was great to top on the tortillas given to us for a seafood tostada, with a squeeze of lime, and drizzle of Tapatio. I loved that the tortillas were nicely crunchy, but were not tough. Shrimp and Fish tacos (only served Friday, Saturday, Sunday) with a nice lettuce Pico de gallo and a mayo chipotle. They reminded me of the fish and shrimp tacos from Baja Ensenada in Whittier. I've got to come back and try the other items on the menu like the Agua Chiles. Place is Cash only and does not have an alcohol license. The parking lot is small, but parking wasn't a problem for us on our visit and there is street parking as well. Bonus was the person who took our order wearing his Dodger cap proudly like we were and side conversations about the team. I will be back and will devour more sea creatures. Here's something that some people might not have noticed or failed to mention. The name! I initially thought this place was a rotisserie chicken place, the damn name of this place is so misleading. It's easy to overlook, but don't fall victim to this trickery. You'll miss out on some mind blowing ceviche and delicious fish or shrimp tacos. I was lucky enough to arrive at a time when the restaurant still had some seating available. A few minutes after my arrival people just had to stand around while they waited for their stuff. But I noticed the staff has a system in place that gets people in and out of their quickly. Enough about the waiting and the seating though, let me tell you about this great ceviche and tacos they serve. When I first saw the pictures of the fish ceviche I asked myself - what the hell are all these people intrigued about? I'm used to the bright colored ceviche, as I'm sure plenty other people are as well. The genius of this ceviche is in its simplicity. The large chunks can be a little overwhelming at first glance, especially for anyone who is squeamish about certain foods. I myself had to look past the chunkiness, as I consciously went in for the first bite of a tostada. It was immediate gratification! They make simple ceviche but they do it well; it's the perfect marination of fish and the addition of cilantro and onion is enough to complete it. The fish and shrimp tacos, or I should say only the fish tacos, were deliciously made and fried to the ideal crispness. Topped off with cabbage, diced tomato, and what I assume is a house-made sauce. The tortilla could have been better but that's of least importance. I mentioned that only the fish tacos were good because I didn't get to try a shrimp taco, although I ordered one. I guess they mistakenly gave me two fish tacos. I couldn't tell until I was working on my second taco, but I did not feel compelled to state that my order was wrong. I felt satisfied to leave things as they were. El Pollero 95 is a must for those that live in the area, and maybe even for those willing to take a drive. Just be aware that they only serve fish and shrimps tacos on weekends and that it's cash only. P.S. The tostadas make a difference, they are served warm and have a tortilla chip crunchiness to them; different from packaged tostadas. Kudos if they make them in house. Also, don't be out of the loop like me and forget to order avocado for the ceviche. I noticed after I was done that people were topping their tostadas with pieces of avocado.
