Another Eat the World LA Find La Casita Mexicana -- another Eat the World LA find that did not disappoint! I first visited while I was in the area with my best friend, who is also half Argentinian like me and does modeling as a hobby. She had just finished another successful photoshoot on the Eastside of Los Angeles, made great connections, and got some amazing content. It was getting late, and we wanted to start heading back home toward the freeway, but we were starving. We both love food and get the munchies now and then, but we also wanted to celebrate her latest milestone, so I suggested La Casita Mexicana. The ambiance was like stepping into a little casita in Mexico -- bright, colorful, vibrant, and welcoming. The staff were friendly, too. We tried an appetizer and shared the Enchiladas Tres Moles. Granted, I've never had truly authentic mole, but I've had versions of mole that were not good. The mole here, however, was out of this world delicious. Even the mole that came with the dinner chips as their "salsa mole" was fantastic. I remember thinking, I feel like I'm experiencing Michelin-star-level food in the middle of the LA barrio. And honestly, that's the beauty of the barrio. There are culinary diamonds all over Los Angeles -- you just have to give them a chance and be willing to try somewhere new. I've since returned with my boyfriend, and the food has never disappointed. For a little personal context, I'm half Argentinian and half Mexican. Although the Mexican side of my family is from Guadalajara and Sonora, I didn't grow up eating Jalisco-style cuisine, so exploring different regional Mexican cooking has been especially fun for me. It's always interesting discovering flavors and traditions that are part of my own heritage but weren't necessarily part of my upbringing. La Casita Mexicana is definitely one of those places I'm glad I ventured out for -- and another successful Eat the World LA discovery. read more

La Casita Mexicana -- if there's ONE thing you need to order here, it's the flautas de mole. Hands down. They serve them with three different moles, and honestly, nobody is beating them on that. All three are good, but if I had to pick a favorite, I'm going with the pipian mole. That one really stood out. I tried a few other things off the menu, and they were okay, but nothing made me want to come back the way those mole flautas did. I'd literally return just for that plate. I also really like the inside of the restaurant. The paintings and artwork give the place a lot of character and make you feel tapped into the culture while you're eating. Celebrated my birthday dinner here with family, and it turned out to be a great choice! I got the Tres Carnes plate, which comes with carne asada, cecina, and chorizo, so you basically get a little bit of everything on one plate. The chorizo was a bit too salty for my taste, but the cecina more than made up for it and honestly was my favorite of the three. The carne asada was solid too, cooked just right and full of flavor. Before the food even came out, they brought us chips with mole, and those were perfect on their own, a worthy palette opener while we waited! The service here was absolutely stellar! Jaime in particular was very attentive and helped ensure we had the best possible experience. They brought out chips with mole which were tasty and a nice way to start the meal. We ordered the enchiladas tres moles and also the enchiladas with a creamy chipotle sauce. Deciding between which one was better is like trying to pick a favorite child! If I had to choose, it would be the chipotle because of the creaminess and subtle heat from the sauce. Heard about this place from colleagues, who said it was the best Mexican food in L.A. Don't get me wrong, this place was really good, but best in L.A. is a stretch. I love mole and this place loves to make various dishes with it. The mole was really good, the food was only luke warm, otherwise I may have been inclined for 5 stars. Tons of seating available during lunchtime on a weekday. Standard feel and decor and importantly, this place was really clean. Cost was inline with local pricing. I've been to La Casita a few times and have had positive experience. The food has been well made and delicious. Today we ordered the Chile En Nogada and the Chamorro de res adobado. We weren't fans of the Chile En Nogada as we found it too sweet, we thought it would be more on the savory side because it was a main dish. The Chamorro was amazing!! The meat was fall off the bone tender, very delicious. Over all my collective experience has been fairly positive. I plan to come back when in the area. La Casita Mexicana is one of my favorite restaurants ever. I think we've been coming for about fifteen years at this point? The people who work there are so friendly and kind, and the food is amazing. I still remember the crema de chicharron soup that I had the first time we went, and the chile en nogada and enchiladas tres moles are so delicious--they're my family's favorites, but you really can't go wrong. It's so hard to describe what makes them so wonderful; you taste so many different ingredients and yet the flavors balance so perfectly. Whatever the soup of the day is, you should get it; they're all delicious, especially the crema de chile poblano. My wife and I don't live close by, so we can only make it out here every few months. But for years, it's been our place to come for date nights or special occasions--birthdays, anniversaries--and you only have to look around the restaurant to know that it's the same for many other families, too. It's a beautiful and welcoming place to come, with so much art and often live music; it just feels full of life on a busy dinner shift. During the pandemic, we were still coming here when nobody was eating indoors; we'd drive an hour to Bell, pick up our take-out, and eat in the car. And in the middle of all the grief and uncertainty of that time, it was still such a treat. More than a treat; something joyful and soulful in such a hard time. We went to La Casita last night for our anniversary, and we saw Chef Jaime chatting in the parking lot with a friend (who turned out to be an artist working on murals for the restaurant). We recognized him and said a quick hi, and we were going to keep walking, because we didn't expect that he'd know us. But he recognized us, even though it's been a while, and he was so warm and welcoming. He even called the restaurant to order us a glass of wine on the house for our anniversary. We had a dinner meeting and they were very accommodating. They are known for their moles and unfortunately I'm allergic but my husband has the 3 moles and loved it. He just needed to lick the plate lol I had a chile relleno with white rice and pinto beans. I'm glad they didn't add cheese to my beans like other places. I hate it when they put jack cheese So just with that I give them a star. I had a cántarito and it was nice refreshing, not heavy on alcohol nor sour. They have great music playing and art thru out the restaurant. They also have a patio in the back for bigger parties. It's a cute open patio. This was my first time actually trying mole out and it was extremely delicious! The complimentary chips in mole sauce was a fun twist on chips and salsa. My dad ordered the Ceviche Nayarit, I ordered the Enchiladas La Casita Mexicana and my wife ordered the Enchiladas Tres Moles. The ceviche tasted fresh, but not really my favorite dish were had. I would say the Enchiladas Tres Moles was my favorite dish we picked. My only problem with that dish was that I wanted more. The plate they served it on made the 3 Enchiladas look small. Customer service was great. Food was great. The interior/exterior was really nice. If you have dogs the patio section in the back is where you'll want to eat from. Great experience. I've been to La Casita before and had the carne asada a la mexicana, and it was delicious. Unfortunately, this visit was a completely different experience. I ordered the same dish, but the meat tasted so bad that I couldn't eat it at all. I only ate the onions and the cactus with cheese because the meat was unbearable. I didn't mention it to the staff because my husband ended up eating my plate, but I personally could not stomach it. I was also disappointed with the menu options. Since La Casita is known for its mole, I wanted to order the Mole de Jalisco appetizer as my entrée. I asked if they could simply serve it as a full plate, but the answer was an immediate "no" with no willingness to accommodate a simple request. It was surprising, especially when they already serve other mole dishes. The service throughout the meal was also disappointing. The servers repeatedly reached across the table directly in front of me, almost hitting me several times. It felt rushed and inconsiderate. What really surprised me was the bill. We paid about $280 for five adults and three small children. Not every child even had their own meal, and although we did order two desserts, the total still felt excessive for the quality of the food and overall experience. Maybe prices have gone up everywhere, but this just didn't feel like a good value. For the same amount, I could have gone a few minutes away to another restaurant and had a much better meal. My mom and I came here for the first time. The experience was a bit hit-and-miss for me. I ordered the chilaquiles with an egg over medium, with habanero salsa. They were listed as spicy, but to me they leaned more tangy -- almost like a tomato-based sauce with just a light touch of heat. I usually prefer my chilaquiles with green salsa, so that might've played a role. The egg, though, was cooked perfectly with that slight runniness I love. My mom ordered the flautas with guacamole, and she mentioned right away that the flautas were on the bigger side. She also said there was a lot of chicken, which I think was her way of saying it just didn't have much flavor for her. It wasn't her favorite dish, and that's okay -- everyone has their preferences. After we left, she said she felt the food was a bit pricey for what we ordered, and I can see where she was coming from. We did enjoy the queso fundido -- that was solid -- but the price point was pretty close to an entrée, which seems to be the trend everywhere lately. Would I go back? Yes, I would. Sorry for the bad photo but I couldn't stop eating after I tasted them. The best chilaquiles I ever had and I order from many places to give this kind of review. Both sauces were amazing and authentic. You can tell they were made from scratch. If I had to choose a favorite then I would go with the red ones. Little spice, soft flavors, rich with authenticity. This restaurant was pretty tasty. I really enjoyed the tortilla chips that I brought to your table that are drizzled in mole! They were really good. The flavor was really good. The foyer to the restaurant was beautiful. The sound of life music filled the air and actually I'm glad that we were seated in the room furthest away from it because it was just loud enough. A little later, more live music was being played, and this time it was in the same room as we were dining. That was kind of cute to leave. It was just way too loud. Don't get me wrong, it was festive and beautiful and fun, but it literally was just too loud. There was no way that we would be able to carry on any kind of conversation. We had a couple of appetizers and shared a few entrées. I will get the names of them more specifically when I have another second. But for now, let me tell you that all the flavors here are pretty good. I have eaten a lot of Mexican, Peruvian, Yucatán, Salvi, Cuban (etc) foods. So I feel like I am very familiar with a lot of these flavors. I've not only had them in restaurants, but have had them home cooked as well. This restaurant did such a wonderful job with all the different flavors. I really like their mole, not just the ones on the chips. I will have to come back and edit this review when I have more time, but for now, like I said, yes, I would definitely recommend this restaurant. The servers are very kind. I heard about the owners, former chefs or something, not 100% sure BUT something along those lines, they were making OG mole so I had been wanting to go there. I forgot exactly what I had, I want to say it was bistec ranchero or something like that. it was good, nothing bad, but also felt average. They served us chips with mole on top and I was like, why did they pour mole all over, bring a little bucket of mole and let me dip it on the side. That's what a good Christian would do, but no, they went with an anti-Christian practice here, communist almost. don't assume I want everything with mole. I would have been ok with it if the mole had been bomb ass good, but it was ok. I had heard this place used original Oaxacan mole or something so I was hyped. My wife had some eggs with whatever the heck a Filipino woman orders at a Mexican place and she's was fine. I feel bad about this review, maybe this place is a victim of its former reputation, and I was expecting very good Mexican food and all I got was OK Mexican food. Also, for a true Mexican spot, you need to have café Mexicano, with canelita and the waiter told me they didn't have any. How can this be? I do not approve. Maybe if you are white or non-Mexican or a fake Mexican, I think you would have a different opinion of this place, you might think is great, just like El Torito is. Am I confusing this place with some other restaurant because the place I heard of was in Bell and the cooks/chefs were this renowned chefs and I don't think that's the case here or now. I have wanted to try La Casita Mexicana for a couple years and finally made it there today. The restaurant is colorful and there was live music. We were seated within 10-15 minutes. We immediately received a bowl of chips with mole, which was delicious. My excitement quickly left when we sat for about 45 minutes without anyone acknowledging us, making eye contact, or asking if we wanted something to drink. We watched every table around us in the small room be served, finish eating, and leave while we were still waiting to order. We would probably still be sitting in the restaurant waiting for someone to notice us had I not gotten up to ask the hostess if she could send someone to our table so we could order. Although someone came right away and took our order, we waited an additional 30 minutes for our food to arrive including the appetizer we ordered. Again, the tables around us who ordered after we did got their food before we did and were leaving. Once we got our order, the food was okay, small portions and one of the orders was lukewarm. The appetizer showed up well after the main dishes were almost done. The Botana de Pescado had good flavor and the Agua de Limon con chia was tasty. All tolled, we were at the restaurant for over 2 hours from start to finish. I'm sure my enjoyment of the meal was clouded by my frustration of having to wait so long. I will not be back. read more

Even on a Friday night, most windows are dark, starkly contrasting the live music ringing out of La Casita. The interior design is eye-catching without feeling overtly kitchy. The canteloupe-orange walls are decorated with an eclectic array of avant-garde artwork, framed accolades, and a faux-adobe facade. Recessed ceiling lights and intentionally worn tile floors complement the aesthetic. The backlit bar to the left is accented with star-shaped lanterns and an ornamental tree sculpture. Traditional Spanish ballads echo around the room, and conversation must be lively to be audible. I visited La Casita with a large party for weekend dinner, and I was glad to come armed with a reservation -- the restaurant was a full house. We began with a solidly standard plate of chunky guacamole and complimentary chips served with a unique, mole-like drizzle. For entrees, my partner and I shared the Chile en Nogada and the Enchiladas Tres Moles. The chile, La Casita's signature dish, was packed with meat, nuts, and dried fruits; doused in a whipped pecan cream sauce; and, finally, sprinkled with pomegranate seeds. The addictively rich sauce was the star of our meal, achieving an ideal combination of sweet and savory without ever feeling greasy or heavy. I otherwise enjoyed the slight crisp of the fresh pepper and the pomegranate's pop of flavor. Meanwhile, the enchilada plate featured a smoky pepian roja, sweet mole poblano, and earthy penpian verde atop compact but juicy enchiladas. Of the spread, the pumpkin-based green mole was my favorite. Even the sides of arroz blanco and creamy frijoles were flavorful. Apart from my dishes, I also enjoyed my family member's tangy salsa verde -- I would definitely get a dish featuring this salsa verde during a return visit. Notably, none of La Casita's food was particularly spicy; rather, umami was king across their dishes' flavor profiles. My sister insisted upon the Flan de la Casa for dessert, which was dense and rich if not mostly standard. Finally, for drinks, the margarita flight was a fun off-menu option to sample the tropical flavors (the tangy tamarind stood out among the pack), the lime-forward mojito used fresh mint leaves, and the horchata was sugary but otherwise flavorful. My old stomping ground -- I'm giving props to La Casita Mexicana for being a legacy business (more than 20 years in business and for improving the culinary scene in Bell/Maywood. The food speaks for itself with the highlight being the moles. If it's your first time, try the three moles enchiladas. My personal favorite is the chile en nogada (stuffed chile with minced meat and topped with a sweet white cream sauce and pomegranate seeds.) I admit that the quality has shifted in the years; in my most recent visit for brunch the service was attentive and patient, but the food presentation seemed more for looks rather than attention to their exquisite quality. The best part of the chile was the meat; but the cream was excessive and too sweet. The cafe de olla, another standard, tasted like regular drip. I still think it's a better choice than the popular Mexican chains and to get a better grasp of higher Mexican cuisine outside of Mexico. read more

Honestly, I came mainly to watch @jasminesmusica sing and play the violin but the experience turned out to be more than that. The food was excellent, and the ambiance was warm and inviting. While the service could have been a bit more attentive, especially since it wasn't very busy, it didn't take away from the overall experience. I would definitely come back. read more
