Chicken is good but if you're looking for a burrito in town this place oddly enough is one of the freshest, most consistently delicious I've experienced (not to mention possibly most reasonably priced). Cali Burritos at 13.99 as of 2025 with everything included: fries, guacamole, sour cream, pico optional. Salsa bar is tasty. I like to grab all options and switch it up each bite. It comes with guacamole, sour cream, cheese and a side of pico. I enjoyed the fries as they were thicker than other spots have it. The Cali burrito was also v generous. Tortillas are not too thin and have great chew. The ratios of ingredients were exactly how I prefer - ton of carne asada and guac, not too many fries! Their carne is seasoned heavily which I enjoy, some might find it a tad salty or too garlicky. The three distinct salsas are also an indicator of a good spot in my opinion. Standard red and green, but my favorite is the emulsified orange. Self serve so you can load up. This is Not my first time eating at El Pollo Grill... I have eaten here many times over the 25+ years and I can say confidently that their grilled chicken is always GREAT! We always order the same thing which is a number "C" meal. This meal consists of: 1/2 of their famous marinated chicken which has been grilled over and open flame and cut up into 4 pieces; rice, beans, choice of corn or flour tortillas and fresh salsa. When I say famous chicken, this is TRUTH! There is a reason why this restaurant has stood the test of time and is a favorite in Lemon Grove... because they consistently put out an excellent product. The chicken is moist, flavorful and the skin is nicely charred (see pic). The rice is moist and flavorful as well as the beans. I have tried both the corn and flour tortillas - both are fresh, served warm and yummy. There is a self-serve chile sauce bar that I recommend you try, spice levels; medium, hot and muy Caliente! This complete meal was $15.99 and was plenty for 2 people. I can also recommend their chicken taquitos as well. The taquitos are topped with cheese, lettuce, sour cream, fresh salsa, and a huge amount of fresh guacamole on the side! So good! I usually order take-out but you can eat in as well... Not to be confused with El Pollo Loco, this is a family owned and locally run business, 100 X better. Came here and got the Special D combo ($16), a half roasted chicken, fries, and salad. The chicken is moist, flavorful and has a nice crispy skin from being slowly cooked over a flame. The salad is very tasty and has multiple components like feta cheese, red onions and dried cranberries. I don't think I can recall a better roasted chicken in San Diego except at a high end restaurant where you pay twice the price, even then its very close. It also comes with tortillas and there is a salsa bar if you want to eat it taco style. If you prefer that, I'd suggest Special C which comes with beans and rice instead of fries and salad. They have a regular tacos and burritos menu but oven never tried it, they are really well known for their flamed chicken. I'd go with a family deal or individual plate combo. Its not a fancy place just, your neighborhood family owned type of establishment. Service was prompt and friendly. Theres lots of street parking in front of the place but I could see how they might get taken up quickly by some of the other business near by too. I've gotten meals catered from them multiple times before and they are excellent. The chicken travls well, the rice is flavorful. Id suggest the flamed chicken with salad or the beef and chicken fajitas with beans and rice. Don't do the Italian, the noodles just soak up all the sauce and the breading on the parmesan just gets bready and falls off, it isn't that good. When my sister and I went to San Diego, we had a bit of a late dinner when we got there. There didn't seem to be a whole lot of choices open near where we were staying in Lemon Grove. So we went to this place that was in our area and I am glad we went. Definitely one of my favorite places now in this area. Tortillas are definitely homemade and delicious. I ordered a bean and cheese burrito and it was good. The refried beans were perfect and there was a good amount of cheese inside. Man, if they would have put Chihuahua cheese in the burrito instead of the Mexican cheese blend... I totally would have been in Heaven. Lol! My sister ordered the cheese enchilada plate and she said it was good. I sampled her rice and it was good. We also sampled their grilled chicken which came with a side of tortilla (we got corn and flour). It was really good. Juicy and full of flavor. Everything tasted good, fresh, and homemade. After visiting another business that specializes in flame-grilled chicken (not El Pollo Loco), we came to El Pollo Grill in Lemon Grove. There was dedicated parking behind the building, but plenty of diagonal spaces were available out front along Broadway. The inside was long and narrow with sufficient seating for close to 50 customers. The service counter was to the right when you walked in with the menu screens hanging above the grills. The left screen displayed the chicken that was offered as family or individual meals. On my first visit, I picked the Half Chicken with Mexican rice, charro beans, and flour tortillas. The chicken was noticeably juicier here than the other place I recently tried. The kitchen likely monitored the cooking more closely to ensure a consistent sear over the flames without overdoing the meat and drying it out. The other two screens listed standard Mexican fare like breakfast plates, burritos, tacos, etc. The next time I came, my choice was a Carnitas Plate that was served only on weekends. Mexican rice and tortillas came with the order, however the beans were refried while guacamole and salsa were also included. The cut of pork had plenty of fat which made the meat very succulent and flavorful. If you asked me to choose between the two proteins, then the pork had an advantage over the chicken. The serving size of the plates was solid for the price although I am sure the value was even better during pre-pandemic times. If it wasn't for the long driving distance, then El Pollo Grill would have my patronage more often. read more

Ordered the chilaquiles. The menu on their board clearly states that breakfast plates come with tortillas. The cashier asked if I wanted to tortillas or would be .50 each. I showed her the menu and she said the chilaquiles plate did not include tortillas (even though it's a breakfast plate) she also charged me .95 extra for sour cream, which chilaquiles should already have. Not the best chilaquiles, not the best service, and prices have definitely increased. I understand "inflation" but restaurants also need to learn to be mindful that most of us didn't get a salary increase that matched the inflation. Hate to judge them on this experience alone.
