I was pleasantly surprised at how good everything was this time. Three chicken was moist and nicely cooked with a good char flavor. The coleslaw was crisp and not overly sweet. Why does this once mighty chain continue to decline? I have to say they've lost their focus. When they were chicken only, you couldn't touch them for freshness, flavor, quality, everything. Now, with the huge menu (shrimp and avocado enchilada, anyone?) that's all gone. I've eaten here a few times, and also visited the San Rafael location. This visit was particularly disappointing. I ordered a 3 piece combo - I had even earned an award for free food having eaten there so many times in the past year - hoping for some miracle I guess. This time, the thighs were practically meat-free. I don't know what kind of scrawny chickens they're buying now. Even worse, all 3 pieces of chicken were way overcooked, stale even. Probably had been cooked earlier in the day and reheated, and not in a good way. And then there's the house salsa. Oh, how I loved the house salsa! It's great with tortillas or to use as a condiment with the chicken... this past visit it had a distinctly odd flavor. Was in vinegar-y? Citrus-y? I just couldn't tell... what it was NOT was salsa-y. Unfortunately, we had a hard time with person taking our order, she kept saying it was vegan but with further inspection of the ingredients I had to tell her that the queso fresco is cheese and dairy isn't vegan. And I never could get an answer if the creamy cilantro was vegan. But she finally did understand and ran to the kitchen to get our order straightened out since she hadn't entered it correctly. Our burritos did seem to come out vegan, no evidence of any dairy. They were good size and were okay. However, the chicken is incredible, so much better then kfc, they slow grill it in front of you. Not like what-a-chicken that grilled outside, I wonder what happens when those get bird bombed, uhuh. Where to begin.....so I went during a non-busy time (1:40pm) and there was no one in the drive-thru and maybe 2 cars in the parking lot. Not the normal lunch time and definintely not busy at all. I went through the drive-thru to place my order. First thing was the chicken & shrimp tostada with a small drink. Second item was the Pollo Bowl Combo with a small drink. Needless to say, the Pollo Bowl combo did not come with the tortillas, infact the person who took the order for some reason put "not Tortilla" on the receipt. Why? Who knows. Now onto the Chicken & Shrimp Tostada. The receipt was correct but that the meal that was handed to me was not! What was in the bowl was the Shrimp Tostada which contained mangos, no chicken and cost about $1.00 less. This was for my boss, mind you he does not like mangos and since it was difficult trying to get them all out he ended up eating just the shrimp and throwing the rest of the meal away. And to top it off, he tried to eat the sliced avocados that were in it but they were hard as as rock. These were some seriously hard slices of avocado. Now to the drinks. The person at the drive-thru starts to hand the 2 drinks to me and says "oh before I forget, this one is the diet coke." I then asked for a cup carrier to which he provided it to me. But almost lost the drinks because he did not know how to properly assemble the carriers so you can place the drinks in securely. Then I looked at the lids and ask which one was diet and which was the Dr. Pepper. I kid you not, his response was "oh the one I told you earlier was the diet coke." I looked at him and said that I have no idea which one that was because he took them both back and looking at the 2 lids none of the drink indicators on the top were pushed so how is someone supppose to tell which one is which. I mean really, it isn't hard and it isn't rocket science to push down the "diet" and for the Dr. Pepper push down the "other" indicator. He then said he could redo both drinks. Ya think? So all-in-all for a completely non-busy time this was not a great experience, employees not trained properly, not getting the meals you ordered, having to throw one meal away (he didn't want me driving back and having my meal get cold). almost having 2 drinks spill on me because the drink holder wasn't assembled properly, etc. And before anyone says I should've checked the food I really shouldn't have to take everything out of a bag, take all the lids off and examine the food (easier to check when you go through McDonald's or Burger King). Now I can't say much about my bosses food as far as taste goes I do have to say my Pollo Bowl was just the perfect size for a late lunch and was very tasty. read more

Coleslaw was tasteless. Asked for two different kinds of salsa and received four of the same kind. Maybe it was my fault for not unpacking the whole order on the counter!?! Nearly every time I order something they get my order wrong or something is missing, and I have to go back or just do without. Food quality is also hit or miss here. Very inconsistent. Service here ranges from I just don't care attitudes to downright rude. They often give me looks when I just asked for a couple extra sauces. I remember that El Pollo is built on concept of an open salsa bar where you can get as much salsa as you want while you eat. The chips had a lovely burnt oil taste, we asked for mango habanero sauce added to food... didn't happen, consequently it was dry af. The Double Queso quesadilla did have quite a bit of cheese and a couple pieces of avocado... and yet still on par with the Taco Bell Crunchwrap, which is basically a soggy used baby diaper after 6 minutes. Drinks were wrong, basically there was a lot wrong. We did get a whole single napkin to go along with the order though! That was a nice extra touch. And the churros; pretty hard to fuck up being it's just fried dough and sugar. And yet here we are with burnt churros lol. Don't come here go somewhere else. I give one star because the food can be good. What isn't good is that most of the time the employees don't understand the order or just don't seem to be properly trained. Also what isn't good is the employees usually don't seem to be welcoming or friendly but more like socially awkward. There have been times where I have gotten my food and when it should be warm it's cold like someone had ordered it and didn't take it and it's been sitting there. I haven't reported it because I felt it was a fluke and also because my lunch break is only 30 minutes so I only have enough time to drive over and back with time to eat quickly before returning to work. The Petaluma location well I went there twice in the last week first time they didnt even respond to the drive thru I had to ask for help, then when I asked why no one is helping me, the girl told me with an additude because "were busy" Now my second bad experience my son was screaming, in the car and throwing a huge temper tantrum. I had ordered the double chicken avocado salad... and they forgot dressing, napkins and a fork. The chicken was mixed with bone and cartilage and the lettuce was brown. I also had to go through the drive through twice because my son was screaming and I couldnt leave him in the car unattended. Not to mention the salad was half the size I Rohnert Park, and missing ingredients like avocado, cilantro, and cotija cheese. I will never return to the place again. This location is so much better than Rohnert Park! I just recently found out about the other locations that are available as alternatives to the onerous Rohnert Park one... There is this one in Petaluma, and another one coming soon to Santa Rosa. I called ahead to the Petaluma location to ask exactly how hot the pinto beans are as I am sensitive to hotly spiced foods, and most of the time, the pinto beans in Rohnert Park are so heavily laced with Habanero peppers that they feel like they are burning my throat out! The guy one the phone assured me that their beans were on the milder part of the spectrum. He also offered to let me taste them first to make sure that I could handle the spiciness. Awesome! I put in my order on the El Pollo Loco App, and drove over there to pick it up. I tried the beans, and they were as hot as I could handle, but I was able to eat them. Yay! They also got my order perfect, but the guy asked me just to verify that they got it right. I had a little trouble getting to the restaurant because of some construction going on in the parking lot and also not being that familiar with the streets and turns in Petaluma. I have an office there, but I really don't go there except to work. He patiently explained the best way to get there. For a Pick Up Order, this was a really good experience. And the food was really good. I enjoyed my lunch. I hope that next trip here, I have enough time to stop and eat in the restaurant. Recommended. read more

Food, really good. I loved the chicken bowl w/rice and beans. The layout, as one Yelper noted, is silly. The takeout window is the very same design as the predecessor Burger King. It was and is in an awkward place, and you would think the designers of this place would not want to repeat the mistake. The curve to leave the window, I noted for years, is so sharp that you have to really pay attention or damage your tires. The interior layout, even with new colorful graphics, is the same as BK, and the personnel running the place looks like the same workforce as before. So, good food, but terrible logistics. If I go back it will be for the chicken only. The remodel took weeks, if not months, and I expecting some great improvement but no, same old layout. Subsequent visits show the chicken choices are really good, and I am revising my rating to add a star. read more

Our first lunch time visit to this Petaluma new fast food restaurant addition, and we were pleasantly surprised. The chicken was delicious! A really great selection of sides are available to choose from to complete your meal order. They also have a salsa bar with four different salsa selections. Everyone in our party enjoyed their respective meal selections with not a single complaint. The restaurant is clean and well organized. The staff is friendly and helpful in answering questions about the menu. They seem to really care about customer's being content with the quality and your satisfaction with your meal. Employees and management regularly went around to customers to ensure their satisfaction. We will definitely become regular customers here if they keep this high level of food quality and customer service. They also offer family meals, which for us would be a great alternative for those nights no one feels like cooking. We were overall very impressed by our dining experience. read more

This is the most disorganized and poorly run fast food restaurant I have been to. Tonight the "shift leader" was taking orders and couldn't find anything on the cash register. I ordered 10 of the same tacos, and large rice and beans and it seemed way too complicated. Way too many questions and she had to ask other employees for directions.
