We went on Fathers day and ordered a Fajita botana for 4. It took them about 25 minutes for the order to come out. After that we went home and opened everything up and they gave us the wrong botana got a mixed botana with sausage chicken and fajita. Since our guests had been waiting we ate the food that was given to us again not what we ordered and paid for. I would have gotten back and return it if I lived closer. The food was ok but the chicken was really dry looked like chicken Jerry. I was really surprised with the quality of the food. Will probably not go there again.​ read more

El Portón has quickly become our go to spot for tacos and Mexican food. It's a great hometown restaurant, just a couple blocks east of the expressway on University Dr. I have been four times, and each time the quality of the food and service has been excellent. The freshly made tortillas are delicious. They offer a variety of tacos, hamburgers and seafood. They have the usual tacos of bistec, fajita, trompo (al pastor), and chicken. They also offer cabeza, tripa, fish and shrimp. Taco orders include chips and salsa, as well as delicious charro beans. I was grateful the charro beans don't have chunks of pig skin or hot dogs floating in them. There are daily specials for lunch and for dinner. I want to come on a Thursday for lunch for the enchiladas suizas! The staff has been very pleasant and efficient each time I've come. The dining room is eclectically decorated with a souvenir plate collection as well as a collection of oil lamps displayed on shelves. The atmosphere is pleasant and family oriented. There is a TV (silent when I've been). There is music (usually norteño), but not too loud. The salsa is spicy but good. I prefer the green salsa. The panchos have shredded fajita meat and are great. I also love the loaded chicken tostadas! Awesome! My favorite tacos are the Tacos Monterrey which include avocado and grated white Mexican cheese (queso fresco). My wife loves the tacos de bistec and the papas (potatoes). The parking lot is limited but nice. I've not seen the bathrooms, but the dining area is always spotless. So I would think their cleanliness extends there too. We've only ordered take out as it's close to home, but I would enjoy dining in and believe you will also. read more

El Porton in McAllen has very bad service it takes them forever to bring your food. The waitresses disappears never comes back you have call out the servers. Food is good but takes forever to bring out the food. I had to tell the waitress bring a Togo plate and the bill we've sitting over 10min. VERY BAD Service read more

Today we called the restaurant to order a botana for FOUR people. Lady who picked up took a while to take the order because she claimed she was new. I said I understood and to not worry about it. I then sent someone to pick up my order and when we opened the bag of food it was a botana for 2 people. The menu online said that the botana for 2 would he $23. Yet we were charged $31. I called el portón to see what had happened and why my order was taken incorrectly. The lady who answered said it was her who took the order and then later on as she was apologizing for the mistake, she said it was her coworker who took the order. I asked why we were even charged $31 IF they gave us an order for less people than what I had wanted. And she said that the prices on the menu online are wrong. So 1. The prices on the menu are WRONG. 2. The restaurant KNOWS they're written wrong and yet REFUSE to correct them. 3. My order was sent home wrong and all they could say was "disculpe ma'am" AND 4. The service was horrible, they took long to get our order and when they finally took our order it was all wrong, we decided to leave and they charged us 20 dollars for 2 drinks and chips and the I think the manager was trying to blame the waitress and it wasn't her fault , i didn't want to make a scene so i payed the 20$. Love the handmade tortillas tacos de bistec I personally order a papa asada con bistec, and then continue to add it inside my taco. They provide a great beverage selection sodas & aguas frescas no alcoholic beverages offered. I always order the same dish! Very clean bathroom which is always the most important! The decor is very cool, & they use the square system for payment, which gives the restaurant a modern look not an old bulky cash register. The service was great and you can even get some Mexican candy on your way out! Love the location too right off the Highway 281, good luck finding a Parking spot!!!! read more
