This was my first visit to El Potro Mexican Restaurant on Perry Road in Plainfield. Seven of us met for dinner tonight, and I enjoyed the company very much plus the X-large, comfortable, and spacious booth we were seated in. The restaurant filled up quickly, and it is family-friendly. They have a 4-top bar with high wooden stools and 6 tables in the bar area. It is partially enclosed, so you have some privacy. The menu has all the traditional appetizers, entrees, and desserts. You will find a variety of nachos, quesadillas, burritos, enchiladas, fajitas, and chimichangas. I had the Carnitas El Potro with chunks of tender pork tenderloin with onions and jalapeno peppers topped with shredded cheese and served with a side of beans and rice. I wasn't impressed with the pork chunks as they were fatty, but the beans and rice were flavorful. Desserts are available with Chimi Cheesecake, Flan, Sopapilla, and Ice Cream. I had the Flan and thought it was too dense. The Flan sauce was flavorful, but I did not enjoy the texture of this Flan, and it is my favorite Mexican dessert. I will not order this dessert here again. I'm still happy I tried El Potro's tonight and had the opportunity to visit with old and new friends. My entree, I'd say, is just okay, but what I had wasn't exceptional only due to the fatty meat. Some enjoy the fatty meat while others, like myself, do not. My sister loves fatty meat, so this is what she expects. Me, not so much. Our server, Laura, was excellent, and she didn't miss a step. Extra napkins, refills on drinks, additional chips, or salsa were refilled quickly, and used dishes were removed timely. Dinners arrived quickly and served together. I always prefer this to sharing a single container per table -food and pricing comparable to others Areas of improvement: -last time I ordered a peach margarita. When asked frozen or on the rocks, I requested rocks but it came frozen. She then said on the rocks isn't an option. The consistency was odd, almost like a smoothie. Wasn't necessarily bad, just different than I was expecting -service is a hit or miss. Have had fast but also have been left waiting Overall this is my go to in the Plainfield area. The lunch specials were reasonable and would come with rice and beans included. Ever since it changed management, the lunch special nomenclature on the menu remained the same. However, if you want to include rice and beans, you have to pay extra for them. You aren't told this at first, unless you ask for the rice and beans specifically. Wow... just wow... it far exceeded our expectations and first impressions. When I first entered I thought: 'Ok, this is a hole in the wall and they love wood working and horses here.' The seats are much more comfortable than they appear at first. As soon as we sat down, we got our chips and salsa. I love that the salsa comes in a little bottle and you get a small bowl for each guest to pour it in. You won't have to worry about double dipper and folks that stick their fingers in the bowl. I appreciate that. Plus the chips are multicolored and I think that's a nice touch, makes it festive. We ordered the medium margaritas and boy they did they job. Nice pour. Then again you can't go wrong with a margarita in the first place. My guest is vegetarian and was delighted to have so many choices here. She opted for the veggie quesadilla and while it seems smaller compared to other restaurants, it had a lot more stuffing. And with fresh ingredients no less. Fresh sauteed onions, mushrooms and spinach, looked amazing. Of course it came with the usual sides of rice, beans and salad. A generous serving of it all. I ordered the rice and chicken soup. It was a lot larger than I had anticipated. Chock full of shredded chicken and rice, with fresh avocado slices floating on top. But the broth took the limelight. I haven't had something this savory in a while. A bit heavy on the salt, but so freakin' good I didn't want the bowl to end. I also enjoyed the mini taco salad with chicken. While it looks small at roughly 4 inches diameter, it is loaded with shredded chicken, guacamole, sour cream, and assorted other things, it is more filling than I thought at first. We also enjoyed a cheese enchilada a la carte, which was only $2.50, I think , and absolutely worth it. Really impressed with the excellent food here. I stopped inside, took a quick look at the menu, and ordered a vegetarian burrito and a side of refried beans to go. Around ten minutes later I was walking out the door with my food. After I got into my car I opened the bag and took a quick look. All the food was well packed and neatly stacked in the bag. My veggie burrito was huge, and topped with queso. Generous servings of rice and beans, a bag of very fresh, very warm tortilla chips, and a cup of fresh salsa. I ate at least half of the tortilla chips on my way back to work. The salsa was fresh and very flavorful, with a nice spicy kick. The burrito was packed full of vegetables that were perfectly grilled. They were crisp-tender and not overcooked. The queso was smooth, the rice was flavorful and the refried beans were well seasoned with a nice texture. This was my first visit here and I will definitely be back. We ordered our food and drinks at the same time, we also decided to get queso. Our waiter came back with our drinks but spilled one and then almost spilled the queso. First time visit with a friend on a Friday evening. Seated quickly and was promptly greeted with menus . Tho it was late afternoon we were able to order off of the lunch menu- tho for an additional $1.50. The room was busy but not overly crowded. Staff seemed to be efficient running plates to tables. We had chips & salsa at our table and I liked that they left us individual bowls for the salsa ! Our lunch quesadillas came out promptly and they were very good. We came here on a Saturday afternoon and it wasn't very crowded. We felt very rushed by the waiter. He told us "The faster you order your drinks, the faster I get the food out!". When the food came out, everyone's rice was cold. In addition to the rice, one of the steaks we ordered was cold. Came here for a work lunch outing. Like most mexican restaurants, chips and salsa come complimentary. Really liked that everyone gets their own small bowl of salsa to avoid everyone dipping in one bowl. Our orders were taken promptly and served fairly quick considering we were a party of 13 during the lunch hour. I enjoyed hard shell beef tacos with a side of rice. The tacos were good, but honestly the meat was really salty. Maybe next time I will try another dish but I did enjoy the rice. Our server was nice, informative and attentive. The booths are all wood with not much butt room that makes seating uncomfortable. Each bench is attached to the table behind you, so if someone needs to adjust their seat, it affects someone else. What. The. Heck. Where is El Cerrito?! Why was it replaced with this more-expensive-smaller-portions knock-off? I used to be able to just go in and the owner already knew my order. Today I searched the unfamiliar menu for the lunch number. I didn't get my gigantic to go coke and I didn't have a grape tootsie pop to finish my meal with. Not happy about the change. The food tasted the same and it's the same atmosphere but the experience wasn't. Service was EXTREMELY slow. We got our table and no one came to take our drink orders for 20 mins. They weren't busy either. It took another 10 mins for the drinks to come. Then we waited 30 minutes for our food to arrive. The queso tasted good but came out cold. The choriqueso took a bit longer to come out but it was very good. I got the El Potro Quesadilla (I think that was the name) it was very good but extremely greasy. When I cut the quesadilla up I found that it was just sitting in a puddle of grease so the bottom half of the quesadilla was falling apart and mushy. My boyfriend got the papas nachos and those were good but the waffle fries were very potato-ey very thick and soggy. You could taste more potato than toppings. I had an enjoyable lunch at this strip mall restaurant. I went in for a late lunch on Sunday and after waiting a short while for the hostess/cashier to ring out some finished customers, I was taken back to a seat in the main dining area. The room had a number of bench seats with oversize tables in the middle row for larger groups. A number of televisions were going with the sound down so I was able to catch action and scores on one of them during football season. The interior is kind of odd...a log cabin style decor on the walls and a rustic old west look to the rest of the interior looked out of place for a Mexican restaurant and with multiple tv's. However, I was there for the food. And the food was really good! I got the complementary salsa (in a small decanter) and chips while waiting for my order of the Quesadilla el Potro. This huge meal had a 10 inch tortilla filled with steak, chicken, and chorizo, with bell pepper, onion, and tomatoes. Even folded, it took over half the plate! On the side was a colorful array of fresh veggies and sour cream. (Note that cheese is available for a small upcharge.) The flavor was really delicious and the veggies inside the tortilla were al dente, not mush. Nice sweetness to the peppers and onions. The only negative on the food is that the plate was so full, it was hard to slice the tortilla without spilling the veggies off the side. The veggies themselves could probably have been cut a little smaller, particularly the lettuce, but fortunately, a table knife comes with the dish so I made quick work of making everything bite-sized. The hostess was pleasant and efficient, but the service once seated was a little on the inattentive side. Although friendly, I didn't get offered a water refill, I had to wait for him to make his way back to my area of the restaurant to flag him down to get my bill. Also, the lady who was busing the tables walked by a couple times without removing the finished dishes I had neatly stacked along the side of the table. Little things, but other restaurants have done a better job of taking care of the service side. (And they weren't that busy at 2:30 in the afternoon.) So, if you aren't in a hurry and are looking for some tasty Mexican options other than fast food, give this restaurant a try. It's easy to find just north of US 40 at Perry Road. Rev #382 read more

This use to be El Cerrito and has changed partners and is now known as El Potro. The restaurant atmosphere is the same as El Cerrito but the food and drink menu is not the same at all. The quantity of food you receive at "El Potro" is no where near as much as you use to get at El Cerrito. The steak and cheese burrito is probably half the size as it use to be and comes with less sides. The 40oz margarita cost around a dollar more than it use to and by far has less alcohol in it. 40oz and not even a buzz..? The only reason I gave this place 2 stars is because there are still many of the same friendly servers here and the food was okay even though it was a smaller portion. It's just such a shame that such a great Mexican restaurant would change so much. I can't say that I would return to this restaurant again after the change they have went through. read more

My husband and I love the food at El Potro. The food here is excellent. However, the food is hard to enjoy because of how hot it is in the restaurant. We were sweating the moment we sat down and I was so thankful I decided not to dress my infant in long sleeves (she was sweaty too). Also, the cleanliness of the restaurant and the service were horrible. Upon entering the restaurant, we asked if they had a sling for infant car seats and the hostess said yes. After we were seated at a dirty table with chips swept into a pile underneath, we waited.. and waited. We asked the waiter that brought chips and salsa to our table if there were infant slings. He said yes and that he'd go get one.... And we waited. Meanwhile, my 8 week old was in her car seat on a slippery booth seat with us holding her because there was nowhere else to place her. Finally my husband went to the back to get one himself. The hostess saw this and said to one of the waiters to help us. It was so filthy and covered in grease, I was careful not to let anything but the bottom of the car seat touch it. Now, we have been sitting waiting for someone to come by so we can ask for boxes. I can see all the servers in the front of the restaurant on their phones and chit chatting away. read more

I have been reading reviews for restaurants on here for sometime now. I finally decided to sign up since I go out to eat a lot. This is by far the BEST Mexican Restaurant around. The servers are all very nice, the place is always clean and the food always pipping hot, fresh and delicious! The portions are generous and prices are very reasonable! I love that they bring the salsa out in a little carafe and you get your own little bowl. My favorite dish is the Enchilada Hawaiians.
