After battling more than 7 hours of construction on I-70 we were ready for cold beverages and hearty fare as we pulled into the Marriott in Plainfield,. Indiana. The front desk attendant at the hotel gave us a double thumbs up on the nearby Coachman Restaurant and Lounge so we made our way over with rather high expectations. We have to admit that at first glance the Coachman doesn't suggest a superior dining experience. A somewhat tired exterior and an outdoor deck populated by smokers gave us pause but we pressed on and could not have been more pleasantly surprised by the food, drink, and service. We started with a Casamiga Ranch Water and a pint of the local amber ale. The drinks arrived in frosted glasses with the perfect degree of crispness. The star here is the prime rib. We had the 12 ounce prime which was perfectly rare and served with a large dollop of horseradish as well as a medium rare prime rib sandwich. The meat was flawlessly seasoned and impeccably tender. Our visit to the Coachman reinforced the adage that one ought not judge a book by its cover. We don't know if our adventures will take us through Plainfield again but if they do we will prioritize a meal at the Coachman! read more

What can I say but great choice for dinner. I was actually on my way to another restaurant. Decided to stop here and check it out. I am glad I did. The place has a great ambience very welcoming. The hostess greeted me very promptly and with a great smile, my server Chloe was fantastic very well informed and suggested I try the prime rib. I'm so glad I did. It was fantastic. I took the smaller cut the 8 ounce they gave you two sides. I chose the French onion soup and baked potato and everything was great. The 8 ounce was plenty big with the two sides so I'm glad I didn't get the larger one. I will be back if I'm in the area. She suggested I try the pork tenderloin next time so I will do that. I am shocked. After waiting for 45 minutes (reservation for 12), we were directed to 3 separate tables. When I got my drink, I went to our group to find 3 different tables with my spot alone in a corner. The waitress yelled that I could move my chair but there were clearly no spots. You will only see the tall restaurant sign along the street. It is tucked away near the Cracker Barrel, if that helps. It has a large private parking lot, with more than enough spaces and a huge dining area. There ia also have a full bar with seating and a small patio area. You will find televisions, without sound, around the dining and bar areas. The restaurant serves up you typical diner favorites such as burgers, fish, salads, steak, tenderloin, wings and Mexican food. They have a packed menu. Be sure to ask about there daily specials. I went with the prime rib and cheddar melt, with a side of fries. It took about 12 minutes minutes for them to prepare my food and have it at my table. It was fresh, hot and delicious. The prime rib was tender and flavorful. I really liked it and highly recommend it. The staff was nice and the restaurant was clean. It had a nostalgic, antique/historic vide. What an abysmal disappointment!! Used to be a great restaurant when Larry ran it. Fish was quite good, but our onion rings came out, they were burnt and cold. When we made the mistake of sending them back, they came out well cooked and hot....unfortunately they were of the lowest quality of pre-made, frozen rings with little to jo flavor. The most plain Prime Rib I have ever had. All the other steaks they serve are seasoned. The server said they actually boil their prime rib first the it's grilled. Asked me if I wanted horseradish for it and I said no. My thing about steak is it should be seasoned and not need stack sauce or anything else on it. One of the best tenderloin sandwiches in central Indiana and it's always consistently delicious. Lightly breaded and pounded out thin but not too thin on a nice sized fresh baked bun with all the fixings, side of fries were not the best and next time I need to remember to get onion rings instead. First off The waitress I guess thought my wife wanted lemon in her water but I was the one who asked for it, no big deal right then when I ask her if I could get some for my tea she walked away saying (well if you have to have one! )Then salads were good , food came steaks were good just a lot of fat , my Mac and cheese was good , but my wife's fries were terrible maybe because they cooked everything in the same grease or something ( not exactly sure ) I even tried them and I'm not picky and yes they were bad .but she finally came back and ask how was everything we told her the fries tasted bad and she really didn't care said they are fine and walked away . Never ask if we needed a refill on drinks. Oh ya my wife ask for ketchup and she didn't seem happy about that. We really felt like we were a burden on her. I have not been here in probably 15 years. I always loved there prime rib. But I went early today so I made sure I got some prime rib. It was not as good as it used to be in fact it had very little taste compared to what they used to serve. The French onion soup was good and the potato skins were alright they were pretty big but there were only 4. My wife had the patty melt she said it was excellent and the fries were good. The inside is a bit dated it was clean and the staff was very friendly. The parking was good but they could use more when there busy. The prime rib is also over priced for the quality. read more
