Our family loves El Potro Restaurant. Their chicken tortilla soup is delicious! Make it spicy with their red chile sauce (the one they use on their birrias. Oh and their birria tacos with cheese .... amazing! Quesadillas, tacos, breakfast, California fries, enchiladas... you name it. (I usually pass on their beans. It's not what I'm use to. but the smashed beans are pretty good). Above all else, the people here are so kind and will do their best to serve you good food. read more

The food was good. Waiter was nice. I was eating alone, just came over from the hospital for lunch. Atmosphere consisted of a 6-8 top of women blaring loud. Yelling and laughing so loud it made me jump several times. They were acting ridiculousand then I went to check out and it was $19.27! My lunch was $12.99, drink $2.99 so that 15.98 x 8% which is $17.28 not $19.27 Honestly they didn't seem happy an alone white girl was eating in their restaurant. I felt taunted by the larger table (laughed louder when I jumped) and the guy that checked me out was clearly rude and never even said a single word...like thank you. Grabbed a late lunch after checking out Padre Island National Park. We were the only ones at the restaurant for the first bit but it was 3:00... Started off with margaritas...guessing they were not tequila but still quenched the thirst. Hubby had chicken and beef enchiladas and I had the chicken verde enchiladas and they were both good. So check it I've been on a hunt for Birria tacos since being in Corpus Christi and had been coming up empty. I spent this particular day calling up restaurant to see if any served Birria tacos and everyone said no except for this particular restaurant. I pulled up and went inside and it kind of gave cafeteria vibes. I was seated immediately and brought chips & salsa. The chips were very fresh and the salsa was good. A little on the spicy side. Finally the star or the show. I ordered the Birria tacos and a side of rice. It came with three tacos and it looked amazing. However when I took my first bite something was lacking. The shells weren't salted and not enough cheese or seasoning on the meat. The meat also wasn't as tender as I liked. The consommé was good though and I used it to spread over the rice which helped because it was bland. The employees were very nice and helpful. Visited here while in the area. Staff was very attentive and friendly. Menu is priced accordingly with the amount of food you receive. Chips were crisp and salsa was different, almost that of tomato paste blended with garlic, pepper and spices, not bad though. Wife had the Plato Jaliscience which she enjoyed. The meat was tender and flavored well, charro beans are excellent, rice moist and good. She said that's some of the best guacamole she's had. I enjoyed the Plato Mexicano dinner; 2 cheese enchiladas with good red sauce, had crispy taco full of ground beef and nice crispy shell. Again charro beans are excellent and broth is very flavorful. This is some of the best Mexican food that we have had in a very long time. I got the shrimp quesadilla, which was great. The shrimp weren't over cooked at all. My husband had the mini tacos w/ al pastor - delicious.y daughter has the quesaburrias - love them. Youngest daughter has the soup and she didn't really enjoy it bc there wasn't much flavor at all. If there were 10 stars I would have hit that mark. The food is incredible and truly authentic. The enchiladas are out of this world as are the quesadillas. The biera (sp?) tacos on weekends are a must-have. I loved their Menudo soup, a/k/a mondongo or tripe, was truly flavorful and near perfect. Friendly and attentive staff. Me and the family decided to have lunch at one of my moms favorite Mexican restaurants that she loves going to when she has lunch breaks. The whole family decided to meet up here and have one last lunch together before I headed out back to California. Once we arrived it was packed. The parking is small but manageable. Once we arrived you can see the waitresses working hard going back and forth delivering the food and drinks. We were quickly greeted and seated. We received our menus and ordered our drinks (which were huge). Our server was fast and sweet. We ordered what we wanted and hardly that long after our food was already cooked and delivered to our table! GREAT TIMING! The food was delicious and the time with the family was amazing! The cleanliness of the restaurant was good and the food was better! As soon as our party of four walked in the door, we were immediately greeted and seated. Two different servers came to take our drink orders and to make sure we had menus. We made our food choices, and before we could get to a deep conversation, our food was being brought out. It was so quick that we were braced that it was not going to be good or hot. We were wrong, the food was delicious and hot. Two of us had the beef quesadillas, one had the t- bone steak, and I had the parrillada. The parrillada was enough food for now and later. It comes with chicken, steak, and sausage, and you can add shrimp for a little extra, plus beans, rice, and guacamole. It was all seasoned well. The steak could have been a bit more tender for my liking, but it was not a deal breaker. The others said their food was good as well. As impressive as the no wait time, great food, and excellent servers, I was most impressed that there was a party of about 30 people also being served and we along with other patrons received the great service that we received. The wait staff all worked together like a well-oiled wheel. They were genuinely nice and even took the time to interact with my son, who is very quiet and shy. He even smiled at her. It was an all-around great eating experience, and it will be added to our list of places to revisit whenever we're back in town. read more

I had a very bad experience at this establishment. The food wasn't terrible, however after ordering two plates and checking my bank account the next day I was overcharged well over $100! After going back the next day to respectfully ask what was going on with the charge, the owner or manager in charge for the day was extremely rude and unprofessional. Sunday's are for breakfast with family and if you're out-and-about during that time, there are very few places better than El Potro. We had family visiting and decided to meet there for breakfast. One glance at the menu told us exactly what we wanted: MIGAS! If you've never had migas, THIS is the place to try it for the first time. Migas are fried corn tortillas with onions and chiles, then mixed with scrambled egg and topped with shredded cheese. El Potro does it right by frying the tortillas so they're super-crisp and won't get soggy when the egg is added - that's the key. The plate comes with refried beans on the side. Get that and some tortillas and you're SET! If you walk away hungry from this dish, you need to see someone. It's delicious, spicy goodness that will carry you throughout the day. Service is very friendly, although they can be a little distracted (slow) sometimes but, hey, it's Sunday. Where else do you need to be?? Prices are excellent. Their salsa is pretty awesome too. Margaritas were average for us but, we added extra salt and black pepper surprisingly the taste became much better and we enjoyed it more that way. This was some of the worst food we have had in along time. We both ordered Enchiladas Al Carbon and were sadly disappointed. The so called cheese sauce had little to no cheese, it was mainly an over salted flour based sauce. It was horrible. The beans were old, crusty and over salted. Prices are cheap, and so is the food quality. Better than Jalisco, but that's not saying much. *I rate all restaurants on the same scale. Some establishments, such as fast food chains have no hope of earning more than 2 stars. Others can earn up to 5, but a 5 would indicate the finest dining experiences I've ever had. read more
