New Mexican food in norristown, the other side with the stores had everything you need for home too

Been there several times, always a great experience! Food is awesome, service is attentive and friendly, the restaurant is lively and family friendly. This last time was a challenge as my father is very picky and his dish was too spicy for him (actually quite flavorful, but not for him). Instead he just wanted coffee and cake. The server and manager tag-teamed and took care of the situation. He had an incredible tres-leches cake with a very tasty sweet coffee. When the bill came, no charge for the cake and coffee (I had his entree packet to go and thoroughly enjoyed it the next day). Always a joy to go there. Be mindful the atmosphere is lively and any birthday becomes a restaurant-wide celebration. Get the fish tacos or chicken enchiladas or go out with the molcajete. read more

Great food here, complete with a great salsa bar, and a grocery store right next door with lots of interesting offerings there as well, including a juice bar and a snack bar. I met a friend here, and we enjoyed dinner. Server was very attentive, and food came out pretty quickly. Also quite festive there, which I appreciated as well. I'd be interested in going back sometime. I think I'd walked into the old location at one point, this one is much nicer. read more

Great for herbs and spices that are hard to find like epazote, Mexican oregano- strong variety of salsa, and hot sauces. Fresh pastries and friendly service. Easy to find the store next door to the PA license center in Norristown. read more

We arrived at this hidden gem, nestled beside the DMV in Norristown. You enter through the market, which has all kinds of wonderful Mexican food items, and an excellent bakery. The restaurant is on the side. The restaurant is really beautiful to see inside, as you feel like you're in a Mexican Bodego. The food was absolutely astonishingly good. Both my companion and I enjoyed the Elote. I had a quesadilla that was absolutely fabulous, and my companion had tacos which he said were astonishingly. Good. I did take out for 20 people yesterday. Chicken and vegetable tacos. In individual trays so we could assemble our own tacos. The staff was awesome in working with me to get exactly what I wanted. Our Friday night dinner party and I, have been going to El Primo Produce for many years for dinner. We used to go to their original and smaller restaurant & produce store across the street. The newer El Primo is our current go-to Mexican restaurant. The food is always terrific with a large number of choices available. Whether you get Tortas, Burritos, Enchiladas, Tacos, or Soups, the quality is always superb. The restaurant is beautifuly decorated and the staff are very attentive. Also, after your meal you can shop the produce store connected to the restaurant. You can buy beans, peppers etc. They also offer a large variety of excellent pastries and cakes you can take home as well. read more

Looking for good Mexican food. Look no more this place gives you authentic Mexican dishes. You can't go wrong with anything from their menu. They have a sauce/vegetable bar. Now they move across the street to a bigger spot and on the weekend you can get a Margarita and the Mariachi Band will keep you entertained while eating some food. they also ask if you have any song requests which is pretty cool. The staff here is amazing! The only issue I have is the new booth is a little tight getting in and out of. But the food and ambiance are well worth it. Best Mexican food in the area. we also grabbed a bunch of baked goods to take home, which were also excellent.

Had lunch at their Bensalem location and was surprised they had one in Norristown. Their old sign (across the street) said it all - Taqueria- Produce - Panaderia - Tienda. And it's one of those places that should say "if they don't have it, maybe you don't need it." You go through the store to get to the restaurant. We ordered the usual tacos and a Pambazo. The tacos were very good - they even had Tripa - which I love. Mrs. B. enjoyed the pambazo - had a good amount of heat and almost big enough for two. Service from Sofia was great - we'll need to study the large menu a bit for the next time. The dining room was spacious, had comfy booths and sports an open kitchen. BYOB, too. read more

Food was fantastic! The service was great and Martin, the host, took the time to review the menu with us. As you walk into the store you are met with wonderful smell and music. the store is full of fresh produce, cheeses, spices and bakery items. There is an on site bakery. Dinner was delicious, every was full of flavor with large portions. We were told that across the street, near the SS office is a Mexican ice cream shop, La Sorpresa. Can't wait to go back! read more

El Primo Taqueria was already serving incredible, authentic Mexican food, but they truly took the experience to the next level when they moved to their larger location by the DMV. The food was always fantastic, but now you get to enjoy it in a beautiful, modern space that also includes a Mexican grocery store, bakery, butcher, and a small produce section. The new location is bigger and nicer, but the heart of what makes El Primo so great--the amazing food--has always been there. Their service is consistently excellent, and I can confidently say their food is the best Mexican cuisine I've had in Pennsylvania. As someone who grew up in Chicago, where authentic Mexican food is everywhere, I can honestly say El Primo holds its own. The tacos, aguas frescas, and everything in between are made with top-quality ingredients, and the prices are more than fair for the portion sizes and flavor you're getting. This place is a true gem and, in my opinion, outshines other local favorites like Plaza Azteca, Rey Azteca, and El Limon. If you're anywhere near the Norristown area, do yourself a favor and check out El Primo--you won't regret it! read more

We decided to come here for dinner! What an experience! This place is serious fun. It's a restaurant behind a grocery store. You enter from the grocery store front, keep walking through all kinds of stuff, and then it leads to the restaurant part. Everything is delicious! My husband got a plate with steak, bacon and sausage. I played safe and got tacos--I got one sausage, two beef tongue (which is my all time favorite) and one beef head! The beef head is fried beef heat meat--it's slightly crispy and has tons of flavor. After dinner, we bought some soda and pastry! I can see myself come back very soon! read more

I came to El Primo recently after not being here for a few years. Upon entering, I noticed that the restaurant was packed on a Friday evening--which is always a good sign. I ordered a chipotle shrimp taco order, and my friends ordered a bunch of other things (but I forgot to take a pic). My dish was great! Flavorful with diverse textures and ingredients. This felt fairly healthy, and this order lasted as 3 meals for me, so the value was there! This is as authentic as it gets. Service is nice and helpful, and the ambiance was lively. The food was good here, a nice menu with affordable food options. Free margaritas too.

My husband loves this place, so we go there on occasion; he likes a lot of protein, especially steak, so it has been heaven for him. For me: the carnitas sope was really dry, and the dish they have that's similar to a chili rellano (can't remember what it's called) was OK but nothing special. But the kicker: they serve on paper plates and you get cheap plastic utensils. If the food was out of this world I *might* be ok with it, but even then, I absolutely hate eating with *good* quality plastic utensils, and these cheap ones were even worse. It's a popular place, and, as I said, my husband loves it, but between adequate-but-not-thrilling food and little white plastic knife and fork that wouldn't even cut the sope (which, if you don't know, is a little pattie-like thick corn tortilla). The next time we went there I brought my own cutlery, and we'll probably go there again but I would probably have to have tacos, since they don't require utensils and it seems like tacos there would be good. read more

Wow. Was not expecting to find some of the best Mexican food I've had in a random strip mall at the back of a grocery store. Place is low-key and decorated colorfully. Food was well-priced, so flavorful, and very fresh. I got the fish tacos, which again were very fresh, and were a great vehicle for their many delicious salsas. Love the giant salsa bar--will need to come back just to try them all. Husband got a pollo special that was almost like a chicken stew with a thick orange cream and he devoured it. We're confident the rest of the extensive menu is just as good. Service was fast and friendly. They don't have a line to leave tip when you pay with credit card so maybe tip in cash if you want to. Authentic Mexican food requires a walk through the bodega store front to get to the gem hidden in the back. We didn't want pizza for a company lunch like usual. So we got a catering platter of tacos, beef, chicken and shrimp. Everyone in the office raved about the flavor and such a welcomed change from pizza. Definitely will be doing this again. read more

This is a great value authentic taqueria with a wide variety of dishes. And they offer legit Mexican food. The service was a bit slow the night we went. But we weren't in a rush. I ordered the Torta Milanesa de Pollo. It's a gargantuan sandwich with tons of avocado, queso fresco, and fried breaded chicken on a Kaiser roll. All the contents were fresh and the whole thing had a great balance of crunch, proteins, and fats. 4 stars not 5 because nothing about it blew me away. But this was a great torta. read more

Few years ago was driving past and saw the sign for adjacent supermarket. I needed some cilantro and figured quick in and out. The supermarket did not have any. But then I saw El Primo. Would they have fresh cilantro? Let me pop in. HUGE discovery. The smell of corn, fresh fruit, baked goods.... Oh My!!! And it kept going and going. Into a real authentic Mexican restaurant. FIND!!! El Primo just moved into a beautiful new facility right across the street from its old one on Markley Street which I've ate at for several years now. (NEW LOCATION on Markley St and Johnson Hwy in Norristown in THE COMMERCE BLDG 2 doors down from PennDOT and on the other side of the building, the Norristown Social Security office). It's an authentic Mexican restaurant (Tacqueria) unlike Chi Chis or Taco Bell or even upscale ones...b/c yes! they have tacos, burritos, chimichangas, etc...but also...and none of these Americanized Mexican restaurants have this: SOUPS like you've never had at any other Mexican restaurant, such as the beef stew I get, esp on a cold winter's day, that has on the top a beef marrow bone, half a corn on the cob, a carrot (cooked of course) sticking out, and full of chunks of tender beef and a rich beef broth. Everyone's very friendly there. And...the front of the 'restaurant' is actually a Mexican food store (tienda) with lots of fresh produce, and now a very nice meat selection (which they didn't have in their old smaller location), various religious relics such as statues of the Virgin Mother, and all kinds of spices and dried things, such as shrimp and fish, and others I couldn't easily identify; as well, of course, as a whole variety of hot sauces in bottles. And Mexican sweets they make there, for take out, such as custards filled with freshly cut strawberries. Also the refrigerator filled with all kinds of soft drinks such as a Mexican coca-cola bottles and of course, Jarritos sodas, flavors such as Mandarin, Grapefruit and Pineapple. CAVEAT: Don't go there on a Sunday night because it's packed with the local Mexican gentry. HOURS: YELP! says it's open till 11 pm. Maybe so. However, personally I don't think so b/c, at least the old location across the street was only open till 10 pm at night (which is still one hour later than all the other restaurants in Montgomery County except for Miller's Ale House and Andy's Diner in Plymouth Meeting and my new great find, the Empire Family Restaurant/Diner in Jeffersonville on Main St/Ridge Pk, newly owned by an Egyptian restauranteur, Mohammed, who in addition to the usual diner stuff, breakfast all day, etc, starting making fresh each day authentic Mideastern dishes, which I love, such as Tabouleh, Baba Ganoush and Hummus; and I think felafel too). But perhaps I'm wrong. However, even being open to 10 is great b/c when I get a late start on dinner, I can go there since everything else is closed. P.S. Going to have my 70th birthday party (Mi sesenta cumpleaños) there and am thinking of hiring a Mariachi band for the fiesta. P.P.S. After writing this review, just saw a blase 3 star review by a Sandra E., who although apparently her hubbie loves it, she complains about the carnitas sope being really dry and just hating eating off of plastic ware and paper plates. WELL..Sandra E., in their now beautiful new expensively fitted out location across the street, they actually have really silverware and ceramic plates. As she so critically wrote in her review: "...But the kicker: they serve on paper plates and you get cheap plastic utensils. If the food was out of this world I *might* be ok with it, but even then, I absolutely hate eating with *good* quality plastic utensils, and these cheap ones were even worse...and little white plastic knife and fork that wouldn't even cut the sope.. Food is great. Service and noise pollution not so great. This place is loud, I feel sorry for the employees that must end up with ringing ears after each shift. Never dining in again. First time visiting this place and it was such a great experience. It's a place with so much to offer! When you walk in there's a stand inside in where you can purchase esquites, chicharrones, flan, 3 leches cake and fresh fruit! The restaurant all the way in the back from the store. The service was fast which was very surprising because the place was busy on top of having many take out orders. The food was delicious! Also want to point out that it was very inexpensive. El Primo Taqueria or El Primo Produce - Norristown - Ay Caramba! What a find this was! It was quite a journey to discover Primo. With the music, pinatas, bins of chilis, freshly made aguas frescas and salsas, I thought I had been transported to Tijuana. After you make your way through the small Mexican grocery store there is a restaurant in the back. This is not a luxurious dining experience with the harsh florescent lighting or blaring music but you do get some generously portioned, quite authentic and very tasty Mexican food at very reasonable prices. Some of the chili sauces were just painful if you are into that (I am..... so just be careful!) Quite kid-friendly (unless you have strollers, leave those behind... some of the narrow aisles you have to squeeze through). Service was quite friendly too. Muy delicioso! read more
