Wonderful Mexican cantina in downtown Norristown
    Jeff H.

The largest grouping of Mexican restaurants outside Philadelphia is in the Montgomery County Seat of Norristown.  There is even one section of town called Little Mexico.  One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is located right in the heart of town on the Main Street called Las Palmas del Sur.  It is a very good place to know about....especially for your taste buds. A recent meal at Las Palmas was a real treat.  It began with the usual chips and salsa ... but I was careful not to eat too many because I had a lot of food still to come.  The queso fundido was served piping hot a la plancha.  This version emphasizes a seasoned ground beef as much as it does the cheese and it is simply delicious.  But again I still had my main entrée to arrive.  My principle plate was an amazing Parrillada - again served sizzling hot a la plancha.  The beef and pork and shrimp were enhanced by greens, scallions, cactus, & peppers amid a light sauce.  To the side were rice, frijoles, greens, and pico de gallo to add to this feast. Of course I wound up taking much of this tasty dish home where I enjoyed it again the next day. The service was friendly and the prices are very low compared to other Mexican restaurants in the burbs which are much less authentic.  I highly recommend Las Palmas del Sur in downtown Norristown.

    Good for three fabulous meals!

The very best authentic home made Mexican, eat in or to go, food in the area. We have been searching for a place like this and never thought that this small establishment would be the answer. Find an on street parking spot, and you will be well rewarded. Friendly owner and staff, clean and inviting interior. Excellent service. You won't be disappoint with the prices either. Lastly the portions are huge.

    Chicken Nachos!

What is this? I have been coming to this location for over 7 years. The nachos here have been the beat I have ever had. I think this is under new management and it has now been the worse. Never have I ever carrots and radish in nachos! Maybe if it's your twist it works but not for me anymore have years of coming here... next step find good nachos in Norristown .

Portion sizes are HUGE, Price is very reasonable, and the food... DELICIOUS! I love trying out Mexican restaurants and this is by far my favorite. Food is extremely flavorful and well made. We ordered tacos, queso fundido, tortas, burrito, and gorditas. Tacos were delicious. The flavor of the chorizo was amazing. The torta was HUGE! The burrito was also great. And the gorditas... DELICIOUS! The meat was juicy and the bun was warm and chewy.

Tacos have been on my mind this past week and we found ourselves here for a quick bite at La Palmas del sur. Restaurant's clean and servers are very friendly and accommodating. Chips are complimentary but I wished they were warm. For our mains, we ordered vegetarian mole poblano, I must say the mole sauce was quite delicious (for all you plant eaters out there the pinto beans are vegetarian-which is a plus!) the fish taco were just OK, it was battered and deep fried on corn tacos with shredded lettuce and tomatoes and a sauce on the side. This place is extremely reasonably priced and portions are quite large. I recommend sticking to entree your can't make at home!

I am a restaurant hopper, been in every single Mexican Restaurant in Norristown, this is my A number 1 in my list, I find myself coming back more often, meat are delicious, Salsa so well made (if you like spicy), but again love their meat, my fav is the "surtido of Carnita" tacos, its pork meat mixed with soft pork skin. I would recommend for them to make authentic fried chips (the one you make frying the corn tortilla triangles) But overall, 100% great... Place is very clean too and their juices are delish

    Las Palmas Burrito ($9)

Certainly one of the best Mexican places in Norristown, Las Palmas Del Sur offers authentic Mexican food at reasonable prices. Day 4 of Jury Duty, and I'm back to Mexican, and I hit the jackpot. Las Palmas Del Sur is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Norristown. There's plenty of seating inside, with the option of table service or ordering at the counter. If you know a little Spanish it helps, as the staff's English is mixed, but they know enough English to make you wonderful Mexican dishes and good value prices. Looking over the several pages of menu with every Mexican dish possible, I decided to order their Las Palmas Burrito ($9), a flour tortilla burrito stuffed with chicken, beef, onions, peppers, rice, and topped with melted cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and two massive shrimp. The burrito is massive, something you can maybe even split with someone else with an appetizer, and it's really delicious. Everything was cooked extremely well and those two huge shrimp on top were a highlight of the dish. It was very filling, and if you're looking for great Mexican definitely stop at Las Palmas Del Sur.

Green Chilaquiles with eggs overeasy with Mexican sour cream, queso cotija, and queso fresco. Da bomb!

So... I was craving some Mexican breakfast while at the post office and came across this little gem. Small place, usually empty but the phone is always ringing and people coming in and out to pick up. Best green chilaquiles that I've had in a long time!

    Tacos!

Best Taco place in Norristown and I've been to several. We started with the 8 dollar chicken nachos and our family of 5 was almost full from them. Little pieces of avocado and chunks of tasty chicken mixed with creama and cheeses. They have horchata the sweet rice drink on tap which the kids loved. I got 3 different kinds of tacos. The steak tacos were the best but all were good.

Great carnitas and al pastor tacos

Not sure about all the rave reviews -- food was decent, not great. They were "out of" a lot of things, strange service.

And the ambiance is really nice -- fancy farm to table with plush seating and pillows. If you're going to get an appetizer, I would highly recommend getting the snack board to share (unfortunately this was eaten before I got to take photos). It includes delicious biscuits paired with the most perfect sausage gravy, thick cut bacon, fruit, croissant, warm donut holes, deviled eggs, and dips/jams. THEY ARE INCREDIBLE. The gravy is jaw-dropping and perfect with the texture of the biscuit -- trust me, you have to try it!!! The donut holes are fluffy and soft fritters. I also really loved the deviled eggs' flavor. For my entree, I got the breakfast pot pie (in the photo) which had the same incredible gravy and biscuit crust as the appetizer, topped with a crispy fried egg. My sister had the Challah French Toast (peach compote) which was also incredible -- perfect without being too sweet. Both were huge portions. Service was also excellent -- our waitress very kindly brought out our toddler nieces' kids' meals first along with our appetizers. She even brought out a little sorbet on the house for my sister's birthday (which also was very very good!)

Although we were one of their last tables, we never felt rushed by the restaurant team. Our group had eclectic food tastes, but everyone agreed that the whipped ricotta dish and bread basket were crowd pleasers. This restaurant has a charming atmosphere, with cozy, whimsical decor that makes it feel both inviting and unique. The terrace dining area is lovely and provides a relaxing setting for outdoor dining.

We started with the Blackfish classic--the hen egg wrapped in freshly smoked salmon--a must-order every time we visit. For entrées, we enjoyed the lobster agnolotti and the crispy dorade in a saffron sauce. To finish, the freshly baked beignets were light, warm, and so GOOD! Every course was outstanding. We've been coming here twice a year for over a decade, and it never disappoints. Don't forget--it's BYOB, so plan ahead. We'll definitely be back.

Part of me feels the tasting menu tonight is a bit of a letdown. 1) The caramelized onion with cream sauce is super salty to the extent that I couldn't eat it. My husband was hungry so he ate both without much thinking, but later he said the high sodium level became obvious towards the end. 2) One of the two main dishes: the scallops are super salty too! But I still ate them as there are only three medium-sized scallops anyway. 3) Seating is super tight, almost uncomfortable. You're literally on top of each other. So the restaurant became very loud and it's hard to hear clearly what the servers are saying. We didn't hear the "inedible sea grass" part, so I was poking the sea grass after I finished my single oyster. The lead female server almost "yelled"'at me. We also witnessed her harshly tell the male server to move faster to clear one table, which we find unnecessary as he was already moving as fast as the tight space allowed him to. But our tall young female server is very friendly--her warm mannerism makes us feel better during the long wait between courses. My favorite out of the seven-course tasting menu is: the smoked salmon with poached egg. It has a very balanced flavor and the texture combination makes the dish interesting. Maybe it's better not to do the tasting menu especially if it's your first visit, as it doesn't allow you to make any choice.

I'm prefacing this review by saying the restaurant was not busy at all. In fact, when we arrived, we were seated right away without a reservation. There's no excuse for how slow the service was. Our waitress stopped by to introduce herself and provide water. My fiancé ordered a zero-proof drink that came out to the table within a reasonable amount of time. I didn't order a drink. We got the Street Corn Dip to start. The top of the dip was way too overdone. It was burnt and hard to get to the actual dip underneath. Thank goodness we ordered that to hold us over because the rest of the food took an hour to get to the table. We saw people who arrived after us get their food before us. A gentleman preparing for a live music session had time to unload his entire set and tune his instruments. That should give you an idea of how long we waited. Our waitress finally checked in and asked us to confirm what we ordered because the "cooks in the back were confused with another table's order". This felt insane to me because we ordered a salad and a shareable plate as our entrees. They weren't complicated items or items that take long to make. My Ahi Tuna tacos tasted great, but again, the wait time and alleged "confusion" from the cooks was just appalling. The waitress did not apologize or come over to ask how everything was after we got our food. Instead, she was catering to other tables with larger parties. It was a very disappointing experience to say the least. I'll be sure to visit the food court next time to grab something that I know will be ready quicker.
