I'm on a quest to try as many taco joints as possible since I got my new job here in Norristown. The first place I tried was Las Palmas. It's a small yet festive looking store front on Main Street right near the courthouse. It wasn't crowded and they had a tv with Mexican shows playing. I stopped in and ordered two tacos... one pastor and one tripa. They came out quickly and were served with a basket of warm chips with beans and cheese and two types of salad. The greens salsa was fresh and not too spicy. The red one was spicy and full of Chile flavor. My tacos were perfect. The pastor had nice chunks of pineapple and weren't too greasy. The tripa was clean --and very flavorful. My lunch came to $6. The service was friendly and fast and the tacos were great. I will definitely be back. read more

The largest grouping of Mexican restaurants outside Philadelphia is in the Montgomery County Seat of Norristown.  There is even one section of town called Little Mexico.  One of my favorite Mexican restaurants is located right in the heart of town on the Main Street called Las Palmas del Sur.  It is a very good place to know about....especially for your taste buds. A recent meal at Las Palmas was a real treat.  It began with the usual chips and salsa ... but I was careful not to eat too many because I had a lot of food still to come.  The queso fundido was served piping hot a la plancha.  This version emphasizes a seasoned ground beef as much as it does the cheese and it is simply delicious.  But again I still had my main entrée to arrive.  My principle plate was an amazing Parrillada - again served sizzling hot a la plancha.  The beef and pork and shrimp were enhanced by greens, scallions, cactus, & peppers amid a light sauce.  To the side were rice, frijoles, greens, and pico de gallo to add to this feast. Of course I wound up taking much of this tasty dish home where I enjoyed it again the next day. The service was friendly and the prices are very low compared to other Mexican restaurants in the burbs which are much less authentic.  I highly recommend Las Palmas del Sur in downtown Norristown. read more

Didn't have to wait too long for the food to come out. Besides I was enjoying the complimentary tortilla chips and salsa (verde and roja), which many Mexican places do not provide anymore. The pastor was seasoned well and so was the chicken. Oh and the Horchata was delicious. This small restaurant seemed popular with locals (now called "Patreon"). I ordered a Las Palmas burrito and guacamole with chips. The guacamole was flavorful and the portion size was hearty, but the accompanying chips were super oily, almost inedible. The burrito did not skimp on filling, though it was also greasy and not very flavorful, topped with cheese that tasted like melted American cheese. Overall, I was very disappointed with the flavor and felt horrible throwing away over half of the food I ordered. read more

Portion sizes are HUGE, Price is very reasonable, and the food... DELICIOUS! I love trying out Mexican restaurants and this is by far my favorite. Food is extremely flavorful and well made. Tacos have been on my mind this past week and we found ourselves here for a quick bite at La Palmas del sur. Restaurant's clean and servers are very friendly and accommodating. Chips are complimentary but I wished they were warm. For our mains, we ordered vegetarian mole poblano, I must say the mole sauce was quite delicious (for all you plant eaters out there the pinto beans are vegetarian-which is a plus!) the fish taco were just OK, it was battered and deep fried on corn tacos with shredded lettuce and tomatoes and a sauce on the side. I am a restaurant hopper, been in every single Mexican Restaurant in Norristown, this is my A number 1 in my list, I find myself coming back more often, meat are delicious, Salsa so well made (if you like spicy), but again love their meat, my fav is the "surtido of Carnita" tacos, its pork meat mixed with soft pork skin. After visiting a church nearby, we went to this restaurant on a Sunday afternoon. Pretty well packed with many aficionados which was a good sign. It didn't take long to get service although it was more than average to get our food. But it was well worth it. I had a Burrito Ranchero which was both generous and delicious. My wife had a Parrillada Steak Entree which she enjoyed. My stomping grounds do not normally include Norristown, but if I return I will check it out. read more

Las Palmas Del Sur is one of the best Mexican restaurants in Norristown. There's plenty of seating inside, with the option of table service or ordering at the counter. If you know a little Spanish it helps, as the staff's English is mixed, but they know enough English to make you wonderful Mexican dishes and good value prices. Looking over the several pages of menu with every Mexican dish possible, I decided to order their Las Palmas Burrito ($9), a flour tortilla burrito stuffed with chicken, beef, onions, peppers, rice, and topped with melted cheese, guacamole, sour cream, and two massive shrimp. The burrito is massive, something you can maybe even split with someone else with an appetizer, and it's really delicious. Everything was cooked extremely well and those two huge shrimp on top were a highlight of the dish. Bomb tacos...really excellent. I love me a good authentic taco...so after reading reviews of this place I had to stop in when I was in the area yesterday. They did not disappoint! Ordered a trio of tacos...one Lengua, one Asada, and one Cabeza. All were good. The Lengua was spectacular. Amazing how a simple thing like a couple small tortillas, some lengua, onions, cilantro, and salsas can be so darn good. This was possibly the best Lengua taco I have had - and I have had a lot of them...in a lot of places. So tender, yet a little crispy on the outside from sauteeing...very clean taste...and great flavor. The salsa verde and rojo were both excellent as well...very light, and refreshing... I ordered the taco lunch special with rice and beans for only $5! They were authentic style with corn tortillas, onion, cilantro, lime. I got the chicken and it was well seasoned. No one likes to be at the courthouse for any kind of business. There is a shining light though, tacos al pastor and carnitas. $2.00 for a taco! I'm in I had 4. Both Al pastor and carnitas were full of flavor and moist. I would have liked to have some chopped pineapple on my al pastor. The service was very good my waitress knew exactly how I like my tacos. I like mine traditional with chopped cilantro and onion, a squeeze of lime. These tacos come also with fresh crispy chips and two salsas and she also brought me some pico de gallo. Stopped by this family run joint during my visit to Norristown for jury duty. The girl was very nice and welcoming. First time and impressed! The server Sonia was great. She was patient, friendly, and really helpful as it was our first time there. The parking was fine. It was street parking and after 6 it is free. The place was super clean and spacious. The meat was tender, fresh, and seasoned well. I got the alambre dish and it was amazing. My wife got the nachos and the portions were huge and enough to bring home for a second meal. The only set back was the nacho chips. The chips were to thick and hard and that is the only area we see that needs to be improved and that wouldn't have been a problem if it was just the nachos and salsa, but since it was the nacho meal that is a problem. I had a bit of a tough time explaining that I didn't want any steak or chicken (no carne!), but I got a burrito and it was delicious! The food was great, but an incident happened in the end. I got a regular $10 entrée, a cup of water and a can of soda to go. I checked my receipt at the end and I was charged $10 for the entrée, $3.50 for open? and $ 2.50 for open ? (it literally said "open" on the receipt). I stared at my receipt because something was not right. I only had a can of soda and cup of water other than the entrée. I questioned the waitress and she said they were for the water and can of soda. I stared at her perplexed for a few seconds and then she said water is free. I felt that they had attempted to cheat me and I felt cheated so I told her to take back the can of soda. In the end I paid $10 for the entrée. If you decide to go, go but make sure to know what you ordered, how much the items cost and check your receipt. I wrote this review to warn future customers of course. read more

Gotta go with a 5. Every aspect - but the food was SUPREMO! Went for dinner with a group of 4 - ate sopes, chile rellanos, sopas mariscos and fajitas. Fresh ingredients - the vegetables, the meat, the seafood - all fresh. The broths for the sopas and rellanos (yes, best rellanos dish we ever tasted) were amazing. Someone in this kitchen KNOWS HOW TO COOK. The young woman who served us was great, attentive and charming, checked in exactly the the right amount. Overall, a wonderful meal.
