The most incredible Mexican food I have ever eaten! When we arrived it appeared kinda sketchy because there was only two other cars in the parking lot. We were traveling and decided that we would give it a try anyway. The food was so delicious that I would drive out of my way just to eat it again. I ate it so fast I couldn't get a picture of my food. The server was kind and got help from another member of the staff to translate some of my questions. The inside was clean. While passing thru Stanton, VA we decided to try El Puerto for dinner and were glad we did. A very nice establishment close to the hotel, plenty of parking and a friendly greeting when we walked it. What a disappointment. Been coming here for many years. It has slowly started descending but tonight it hit bottom.Ordered Camarones Diabla for myself. I've had hotter toast. It consisted of 7 shrimp, rice, and a dollop of guacamole on shredded lettuce. 3 flour fajitas. My daughter had Arroz con Pollo. More zucchini and bell pepper (basically just chopped and thrown on) than chicken and rice combined. Ordered chips and queso, you get more chips in a Lay's snack bag. And a generous portion (sarcasm) of queso. I included photos of all except the shrimp. I hope they can make the $35 l spent last, because it's the last money I'm spending at this location. read more

I adore this place. If you are expecting a colorful restaurant with lots of Mexican themed decorations, you won't see much. This is a bland, brown atmosphere. If you are expecting awesome Mexican food, you will be happy. There is a buffet and a menu. The buffet had rice, beans, warm Mexican dishes and a few other items. We ordered off the menu. The burrito was awesome. The chips are better at Chili's but the salsa is great. We arrived at 11:30 am to beat the lunch crowd. By 12:30pm, they were much busier. The servers are nice and don't mind splitting the bill, no matter how many people are in your group. If I lived closer, I would visit more often. read more

Been there before and place was OK -- this was unacceptable. I was looking forward to a jumbo margarita and some decent tex-mex. Our server didn't seem to get the whole premise of service and could not provide my request for a margarita with "lime". I was asked what other flavor I wanted. Believe they had peach and mango. Place has a full bar! Food should have been OK but (the chile colorado and chile verde) seemed like reheated leftovers. Asked for water and got one glass for both of us to share. Seemed like the server was angry about bringing it based on the noise it made coming down on the table top. Wasn't able to track down server to obtain our bill. We had a great experience here (as usual)! Our server, Steven, was attentive and efficient, despite being busy. Our chips and salsa were brought to our table right away. Disgusting! Please save your money and go somewhere else. I ordered pork carnitas which were supposedly cooked in their special blend of spices, juices and shredded. It tasted like pork fat boiled in water (pictured). Mine at home are 1000 times better. The kids ordered Arroz Con Pollo, their "chicken" taste just like fish. This is the place that started it all, El Puerto has grown to be a very successful chain in our small area, but this one was the first to come here, it's the biggest, the most decorative, and it's the only one to offer a lunch Buffet, which gives some amazing food for a very low price (all you can eat Fajitas? yes please). The staff is friendly and always on top of things, your drink will never be allowed to go empty, and you will never be left waiting for attention. I have tried every Mexican Restaurant I've come across, but I always just end up comparing them to this one, and everyone else just comes up short, in fact my sister moved to Texas, and still tells us she can't wait to come back to Virginia for the Texas Fajitas. read more

I've eaten here only twice, but today's meal provoked me to leave a comment today. I was not happy. The Texas salad was salty. When I informed of it, they only stated that it was because of the seasoning. No suggestion or recommendation for a change, modification, or accommodation given I was clearly not happy with the meal. This was the absolute worst Mexican food I have ever eaten. Texas nachos looked and tasted like they scraped leftovers onto the plate. There were maybe 15 chips on the plate the chicken and beef were barely warm and the shrimp were bright orange and chopped into small pieces. For some reason my extended family always wants to eat here after church. I cannot understand the appeal and generally try to avoid this place. We came for lunch and didn't get to leave for an hour and a half. We didn't get the buffet, which was our first mistake, because if you order off the menu when they're having buffet, you can count on your order taking forever, or being wrong, or both (which was the case today). The complimentary salsa and chips were delicious (according to my husband and sons), and the queso was great. That's where the good experience ended, because our food took a long time to arrive, and when it finally did, three out of five plates were wrong. The server said she'd have them make us the right thing but we decided to eat what we had because we didn't want to wait any longer. We ate our meal which was 'meh', and didn't see our server the entire time. Our plates were empty and we waited for around 20 minutes longer for her to bring our receipt. We had some friends at the next table over that only had their server return once. Then we waited another 10 minutes for her to come take our card to pay for our food. That was some of the worst service I've ever had in a restaurant, and I dread the day when I have to return. (Side note: my husband and son said the restroom was disgusting.) read more

There were three of us today...two of which ordered the Seafood Burrito. I was disappointed because my Burrito's contents were lacking some of the ingredients according to the menu. There were no scallops or red peppers. My daughter's Burrito was ordered without red peppers and it was stuffed with the right ingredients...including green peppers. Imagine that. Service was good...so I tolerated the underwhelming Burrito and took to Help to vent my dissatisfaction. No. The answer to your question, "Do I want to eat at El Puerto?" is, no. We ate here when we first moved to Staunton almost 5 years ago. The food and drinks were good but service was slow. Then service got slower and slower and we said we'd never go back. A few weeks ago we decided to try it again. Service was good and the food was good; so we went a second time. Service was slow but not too slow; so we decided to go back with our parents to celebrate a child's milestone. Everything about our visit was terrible. As soon as we were seated we realized the table next to us was having trouble. It took 20 minutes for us to get drinks. We didn't order our food for almost 30. The table next to us got their food after we had finished eating but they arrived 30 minutes before us. And let's talk about the food. Mine was inedible. It was stone cold. All of our orders were either cold, piping hot (micowaved) or lukewarm. After waiting for an hour, it was incredibly frustrating. I went home and cooked for everyone. There's no excuse. The restaurant was not crowded. We had plenty of time to observe the other tables. We ended up asking the other tables what their issues were: slow and inattentive servers, cold food, bad manager. The manager didn't want to talk to anyone about the problems they were having. He just told the servers to offer discounts. There are some really good Mexican restaurants in Staunton. Don't waste your time here. read more

Taco's El Pastor... When I die, I'll know I'm in heaven when the great feast has Taco's El Pastor on the table. The menu is outstanding. We've been regulars here for a few years and can safely say I never had a bad meal there - I try and get there once a month at a minimum. This place was very good for middle-of-nowhere Virginia Mexican food. I was stuffed, and I couldn't stop eating my green enchiladas with chicken until they were all gone. The chips and salsa were delicious, too and they kept them coming. The only problem was at the end of the night, when we were trying to pay, there was no one to be found. We thought they must have been giving all the food away for free, but eventually a gentleman we had not seen all night popped out of nowhere and got us a box, and took our bill. Here for Sunday lunch buffet. Food is mediocre at best. No logical order to placement of food on buffet. For example, the taco meat and fajita meat are placed before the taco shells. Supposedly there were soft flour tortillas, but I never saw them. There were cinnamon chips for dessert, but they were not labeled and were placed next to cheese sauce.
