I had a great experience at Latin Soul Restaurant. I ordered a large hibiscus juice, which was refreshing and perfectly balanced--not too sweet. For my meal, I had the street tacos with both chicken and steak, served with rice and refried beans, along with pickled onions and radish slices. Everything was incredibly flavorful, and the portions were generous for the price. I also tried a collard green and cheese pupusa, which was something new for me since I've only had more traditional ones before. It was absolutely delicious and a unique twist that really paid off. They offer a wide variety of pupusas, so there are plenty of options to choose from if you're a fan or looking to try something different. This place was an oddly shaped older building just outside the downtown area. It wasn't air-conditioned, though there was indoor and outdoor seating and a decent amount of shade by the time in the evening that I made it there. There was only one person working on the Monday I stopped by, but it was a busy place, and thus not the speediest service. Substantively, I found that my horchata was a strong, nutty beverage. They were out of a tamale that I wanted to order so I just got a bunch of pupusas, including typical options like bean and cheese but also the more distinctive collard greens. They came with an interesting curtido, a lightly pickled cabbage slaw that had a variety of ingredients. Collard Green Pupusas. My mind is blown. Who knew that this combination would work. I thought it was gimmicky and then I tried it and was immediately hooked. This is not only an item that I will order again but one that I will talk about every chance I get. The other Pupusas we had were good, with the chicken being the other standout. The chorizo and carnitas were good, don't get me wrong. They just didn't stand out like the collard greens and chicken ones. Outdoor patio is the place to be. The people watching and breeze were just delightful. So why not 5 stars? The service was a bit slow for my liking. Cute little place that feels like a someone's home. Very friendly waitstaff, bustling kitchen creating authentic dishes that feel homemade. The refried beans are authentic El Salvador with that nice reddish hint and delicious flavor. I had the Sopa de Gallina, which was huge chunks of chicken and vegetables in a savory broth. A slight jaunt off the beaten path in Staunton lies this Latin American / Soul food fusion restaurant. Architecture is a bit funky, but they make good food and everyone in our group enjoyed their dishes. The beef stew and chicken soup were both rocking good and extremely flavorful (both were soups of the day). Folks dug the plantains. My Mexican street tacos were good (not so much the chorizo, but the chicken and Al pastor were great). The only knock on Latin Soul was the lack of a bartender on our visit, so most of the drinks menu was unavailable. I'd still happily eat there again! read more

The food was actually good, the serving size was small, very small. How do you only give a quarter cup of rice as a side and an even lesser amount of refried beans? My steak tacos, again, were pretty good but very little meat. The pickled onions were tasty and their guacamole taco sauce was excellent. This restaurant desperately needs Robert Irvine to reorganize their kitchen and train the wait staff. Truly, the waitresses were among the worst I have ever seen. The kitchen sent out incomplete meals to both tables beside us and our meal took 45 minutes to be served. The restaurant was less than half full. So good! The food here was so good. I got the Mexican street tacos (chicken, steak and chorizo) they came with a spicy habanero sauce that was actually really spicy! The rice and beans were also good. My husband got the chicken taquito dish and it was so good and the taquitos were so crunchy. We also got chips and guacamole which was pretty good but did have big chunks of tomato. Our server was very friendly and attentive. I will be back! read more

I'd read so many rave reviews about Latin Soul and seen so many mouthwatering pictures that it felt like a long time coming before finally trying it for myself. It came as no surprise that Latin Soul lived up to its strong reputation. Everything down to the plantain chips was delectable and seasoned to perfection. The green sauce was amazing and delicious on everything. The portions were slightly on the smaller side and more rice would've been good but overall, it felt like a healthy amount of food. Food was mediocre at best. The meat on the street tacos was heavily salted and overcooked, with any other flavors just salted away. The appetizer of chili cheese fries was just grease soggy and gross. The service was poor, with the waitress barely interacting with us. For the first time ever, I actually wished there had been a kiosk to order from, as it would have been more personable. Not much of an atmosphere, other than being hot. After about 8 minutes, a server asked if we were ready to order when we hadn't even had drinks or menus on the table. Another server came over with waters and we ordered Yuca Fries. It took another 25 minutes for the server to come back to our table with only two other tables seated in the whole restaurant!!!! When she came back, she checked is the Yuca was ready only to be told they were out of Yuca. I've been a server before, their POS system is toast, and you can 86 items on the handheld (why was this not done??). We have been meaning to stop in for breakfast for a while, and this morning we finally did. We will definitely be back. We had the breakfast specials: the El Salvadorean, and huevos con chorizo. The food was delicious, the portions were quite large (food coma already), the coffee was good and hot, and service was attentive. Looking forward to when they get their liquor license as the food would be improved with a margarita or beer. We have frequented this restaurant in the past when it had other owners. Oh my goodness! What a hidden gem in Staunton. The restaurant is housed in the former Table 44 location. Three of us dined in for an early dinner. The Cobb salad is gigantic and gorgeous. Great location, around the corner from Sunspots glass and next to Crucible Coffee. There is a peaceful outdoor patio and charming restaurant in an interesting building. The wait staff are friendly and attentive. The food is delicious, super fresh ingredients, and big portions. Apparently, an older white gentleman sitting by himself at the bar isn't worthy of your staff's attention or service. Other customers come in, are greeted, and get immediate service (young women). I met staff's eyes several times, and at least three of them ignored me. I won't be back. Why do so many Staunton restaurants have lousy customer service??? I was looking forward to making this a regular place, and I have been here before. The food isn't good enough to tolerate the disrespect. Even another patron noticed the lack of service before I got up and left. If you need to seat customers, then take down the Take a Seat sign. SO Disappointed! read more
