Normally I'm not a fan of this type of Mexican -- ordering at the counter while they build it in front of you, because it's usually nothing too special. But, boy, was this tasty! I had the sampler platter and I'm a little ashamed to be unable to report exactly what it consisted of. I asked of course, but I didn't quite catch it due to English being a second language for the staff. Still, I knew it would be Americanized Mexican and it was all very good! Unlike other reviewers, I thought the prices were reasonable for what it was. My meal was $6.99 and was just the right portion so I didn't have to either fight my conscience about throwing away food or take home leftovers that probably wouldn't translate well for the next day. Hopefully this place sticks around. We'll definitely be back!

Solid Mexican food and a sister restaurant to the one on Park Street. Very tasty and quick. The ground beef tacos are very savory. Probably worth splitting with a friend in my case!

Amazing service, great food! Tamales are $2! El pastor (spicy pork) on the menu is not too spicy. Outdoor seating!

I ordered the tacos to go, right away was asked if I'd like flour or corn tortillas, having two young children I needed 2 flour with ground beef.

I know that's…read morethe typical thing you think of for Mexican food, but it has been on my list to find places that serve it in the Midwest. After trying different variations from other restaurants in Chicago and Madison, I have to say they have the best carne asada fries (titled Loaded Fries under the shareable section). The fries are wedged with an assortment of quac, sour cream, their own cheese sauce, and pico de gallo. What made it so good was the ratios of the ingredients and the cheese sauce. The portions are enough for two people to share, though you may leave with clogged arteries. Although at times there may be a language barrier with staff, they were attentive to our needs and checked on us regularly. A fun fact is that they are located behind the grocery store aspect of the place. Vibes were great.

GF got 2 steak and one chicken tacos. She said steak was good but chicken was flavorless. I got lengua and cauliflower. The lengua was not cleaned well or seared so it was just gray meat with veins and other sclera in it. Cauliflower was typical bar food "deep fried buffalo" style, but on a taco. Guac was decent. I think the gal making margaritas mixed up sugar and salt and our drinks were salty. Poor service - total of 3 people attended our table but nobody returned to check on us. Total experience $45.

Happy hour everyday which means half off select tacos and beverages. Like $3 Pacifico's and $5 for two tacos. Vegetarian tacos with potatoes were well prepared on corn tortillas. The flank steak carnitas frescas was outstanding. Little crema, little lime for acid, dash of hot sauce for heat - just delicious. Hard to describe how friendly and inclusive the vice was at Canteen. This is on my regular stop from here on when I pass through town. You don't be disappointed!

It looked really good when we saw their post on Facebook right before we went. There were only a few people there when we arrived, so we were seated right away. The waiter came pretty quick to get our order, but unfortunately, when we tried to order the burger week burger, they said they weren't making it. This was really the only reason we stopped here for lunch, so we were slightly taken off guard by this. Since we were already there, we decided to order the lunch special of two tacos, rice, beans, and a drink for $12. It took a little while for the food to come out, but everything tasted fine. The carne fresco tacos were quite tasty and I would definitely order again. Overall, the food was fine, but it was a disappointment that they didn't have the only item we came there for. We ended up ordering ahead from a different restaurant participating in burger week and went to pick it up so we at least got to try one.

It's also rare to see these "antojitos" in the menu. I also tried the milanesa and that was my favorite. Thin and lightly breaded. So good! The fajitas and taco salad were delicious, as well. Came on a Sunday afternoon to a nearly empty restaurant and got seated immediately. Ordered horchata and enchiladas verdes and ny girlfriend ordered the enmoladas. The horchata was nice, though it wasn't fresh or homemade. I was mixed on the enchiladas verdes, since the rice, beans, and chicken tasted great. My only gripe was that the salsa verde was lacking in flavor and acidity I expect from a salsa. I got to taste the enmoladas and the sauce for that seems to be their signature. Delicious and complex. My girlfriend was very happy with her meal. I was also pleased to see that you can pre-order a dozen tamales a day ahead any time (not just seasonally) I will come back again, especially to pick up more tamales rojas and to try some other dishes
